can someone please explain why water is a versatile solvent? :-\
Water is polar right? That means it's able to dissolve other polar substances, which makes it a versatile solvent (many organic molecules are polar (eg. monosaccharides), meaning water is able to dissolve them). This also makes water the ideal medium for metabolism (because these molecules that are involved in metabolism are dissolved in water).
