To those studying uni, what is the purpose of your study?
To become some sort of doctor I guess, specifics haven't been worked out yet :P
What are you studying and how are your studies going?
Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery @ Monash (Clayton). Going alright.
Why have you chosen to undertake university study as opposed to other career pathways (e.g. tafe, working fulltime etc)?
Interest, past experiences that inspire me, etc. Many reasons.
What is the purpose of your life?
Time will tell.
What do you hope to achieve in 15-20 years time? Where do you see your life heading?
Not sure as I'm not sure what type of doctor I would like to be and am not sure if I can even pass the course yet LOL
When did you figure out that you wanted to do the course your doing now?
Sometime late 2010.
Are you happy with the direction your life is heading now?
Yes.
Questionnaire filled :P

Originally, my purpose was to become a teacher and become smarter. In that order. Both were extremely important (gosh darn it I just want to be supasmart /cries)
Now I'm studying because I love it so much. It is like intellectual sex. Orgasms in my brain erryday. (For 3 of 4 subjects, anyway). Or like when you need to take a piss so badly and you're like "fuck fuck fuck" and then you finally get to the toilet and it's like "ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my god". That's what Uni feels like. So my purpose is just to learn more about the stuff I'm learning about, at the moment. Still heavily want to become a teacher.
I'm technically in a Double of Arts/Secondary Education, however I'm not taking any education subjects. (So fucking boring omg). I'm planning to transfer into Arts/Science mid-year. Then I can pick up Methods bridging and then Spesh bridging and hopefully further (fulfills both of my aforementioned purposes :') ). The studies are going as above.
I chose university because I have a job. Like. I've worked 40 hour weeks before, and it's something you do not want to be doing. At all. Unless it's something that gives you joy. Lol. I also really liked high-school, and reconnecting with education was good. I found out that education was important, so I wanted to get more educated, and be qualified to educate others.
The purpose of my life? Well. I'm a bit of stardust, really. I don't really have a purpose... I suppose I want to leave as positive a mark on society as I possibly can, and love my life and love the people in it.
In 15-20 years time? Fuck son. I'm 18 years old, like I'm thinking about what I'm doing in 20 years time lol. Achieve? I dunno, I would like to be super fucking rich. Because then I can get even more rich and help people on a fucking gigantic scale. Achieve. If I managed to help a fuckload of people, go to a whole bunch of countries, raise some awesome fucking kids who were like the pinnacle of human existence... That'd be pretty cool. I see my life heading towards being a teacher, for five years after uni. I haven't looked that far into the future for that. I mean, by the time I've been teaching for 5 years I'll be nearly 30. I have no fucking idea what I want at 30, and that's okay. Hopefully I study a lot of things and become like a superfreak genius.
What about you?
[man errytime I write this shit out I realise how much of a word-vomiter I am]

I haven't actually started university yet, but I'm a class of 2012 graduate who intends to begin university next year, so I'll answer it anyway:
To those studying uni, what is the purpose of your study?
In order from most important to least important:
1. To gain qualifications
2. To increase my knowledge
3. To meet new people and experience the "uni life"
4. To take a break from full time work
What are you studying and how are your studies going?
I will be studying Bachelor of Arts at Melbourne and it will be going very well, thank you.
Why have you chosen to undertake university study as opposed to other career pathways (e.g. tafe, working fulltime etc)?
Because all the good jobs either require university or are more likely to be given to university graduates. Also, I don't see myself as much of a TAFE sort of a person, and I am working full-time this year but I feel as if I need a few years break to experience other things first before I settle down with a full-time job. Also, I feel as if I am capable of handling the workloads of university, so it would be a waste for me to miss out when there are so many people who want to go to university but can't quite make the cut.
What is the purpose of your life?
Ultimately, I want to help people. I want to make this community a better place for everyone. To the scum of the world, I want to talk to them, understand their situation and offer them advice on how to become better people, even if it costs me time and money. To the innocent victims, I want to offer them protection and help so that they can have a peace of mind and not have to live as if they have just survived an apocalypse. To all else, I want to ensure that they remain in a satisfactory position and do not have to live in fear every day. I don't have the power to change the world on my own, but I'm hoping that my future job gives me the power to make some sort of a difference, and I can only hope that others who also have this power will unite together to make the world a better place.
What do you hope to achieve in 15-20 years time? Where do you see your life heading?
I want to join the AFP (Australian Federal Police). I want to travel around Australia, perhaps overseas too, and deal with huge issues. I can't stop everything on my own (I will leave petty things like road safety and graffiti to the state police), but I want to stop as many national and large-scale crimes as possible, and help those who have been involved in such circumstances (victims or perpetrators, they are all suffering on the inside and they all need help). It is not my aim to punish people, to arrest people or to become power-hungry. It is my aim to increase the well-being of everyone and to encourage people not to commit crimes in the first place (since prevention is better than cure).
When did you figure out that you wanted to do the course your doing now?
Fairly recently, actually. I always knew what job I wanted to do, but I was never quite sure how to get there. I had a vague plan about going to university, but I was never sure on the specific course that I wanted to do until a few months ago.
Are you happy with the direction your life is heading now?
I'm starting to become more content with my situation. I was pretty upset at first when I saw my ATAR score, my study scores and worst of all, my literature score, but I am starting to come to terms with that and working towards my future. If this year is a success for me (saving up money, getting job experience and getting into university next year), then my life will be on track, right where it needs to be. It all depends on how well I do this year: in TAFE, in work, in everything.

'What is the purpose of your studying?'
To get a decent job and make a lot of money.

To those studying uni, what is the purpose of your study?
I'm interested in human science in particular, so I guess I'm studying to explore my interests, and have the opportunity to explore some potential fields I'd never heard of before.
What are you studying and how are your studies going?
Bachelor of Biomedicine @ The University of Melbourne. It's pretty fast-paced (feels like high-school on drugs) but I think I'll adapt to it.
Why have you chosen to undertake university study as opposed to other career pathways (e.g. tafe, working fulltime etc)?
Because the field I want to work in requires university study, and I wouldn't want to be entering the workforce so early in my life.
What is the purpose of your life?
Talk to me in 20+ years
What do you hope to achieve in 15-20 years time? Where do you see your life heading?
Well, I hope I'm part of a profession I enjoy and find satisfying. I think I've got to go through a few more struggles before I can see the light though.
When did you figure out that you wanted to do the course your doing now?
Well, I've wanted to do Medicine since Year 3...but since the UMAT kinda killed my chances I made the decision to go to Biomedicine last year.
Are you happy with the direction your life is heading now?
I wish things were easier but life doesn't work that way.

Gather knowlege in order to suceed in my future job. Scientia potestas est
Meet more people, party hard, lol
What are you studying and how are your studies going?
I will be studying Electric Engineering and hopefully doing as well as my dad did (if that's even possible)
Why have you chosen to undertake university study as opposed to other career pathways (e.g. tafe, working fulltime etc)?
I want an intellectual challenge as much as I just want to become an electric engineer.
What is the purpose of your life?
travel around the world, find the love of my life, start a family, life a long and happy life
What do you hope to achieve in 15-20 years time? Where do you see your life heading?
Finish my PhD studies summa cum laude. Get a nice, well-paid job. Be on 'Who wants to be a millionaire?'. Travel heaps through Asia and South America. Hopefully Marry :D
When did you figure out that you wanted to do the course your doing now?
A while ago, I just love electrical stuff. There is heaps of other stuff I'm interested but idk it just interests me most and I think I'd also be most happy with it in a job. Especially when it comes to working hours and working conditions.
Are you happy with the direction your life is heading now?
My current situation no, but certainly happy with the direction :D

tl;dr - 'What is the purpose of your studying?' Ps get degrees, HDs gets jobs. Learn from the past, look to the future - but most importantly, live for now.

To those studying uni, what is the purpose of your study?
To develop the means to help those in need; to keep science and the human condition tied to each other, with each growing and developing as the other does.
What are you studying and how are your studies going?
Biomedical Science/Science double degree at Monash. It's insanely different to VCE, and in all honesty it can be a challenge, but it's certainly never boring.
Except maybe STA1010, that's pretty meh.
Why have you chosen to undertake university study as opposed to other career pathways (e.g. tafe, working fulltime etc)?
Couple of things:
I've grown up in a community where the vast, vast majority of people have some form of university education. I guess it's just something I've always expected (and wanted!) to do. Well, here I am.
Also, my parents (primary school teacher and driving instructor) are not high wage-earners, and it's been tough economically. So, I want to get a high level of professional qualification and a well-paying job, so when the time comes for me to start my own family, I can provide for them to the extent that they'll be more comfortable than I've been, growing up.
The sorts of opportunities offered by TAFEs never really interested me, nor did non-tertiary-qualified full-time work.
What is the purpose of your life?
Shit man, no idea. I guess I want to help people, and discover things about the existence we're in to broaden our collective knowledge and understanding of everything as a species.
What do you hope to achieve in 15-20 years time? Where do you see your life heading?
See above response + moderately wealthy with a good reputation and a happy, healthy family.
When did you figure out that you wanted to do the course your doing now?
~2008, after I got over wanting to be an archaeologist LOL
Are you happy with the direction your life is heading now?
Well; I'm in a first-world country, attending a prestigious university doing a course I love. I went to a school that I loved with people who, for the most part, I'm happy to have spent 15 years of my life with. I have access to AN where I can be in contact with a group of brilliant, passionate, empathetic people who give me massive hope for the future. I have a home, I have a family.
So I guess I can't complain.

Personal growth is purpose enough for studying.

Personal growth is purpose enough for studying.
Many people study not because they want to but simply because they can...

To those studying uni, what is the purpose of your study?
To further mathematical research!
What are you studying and how are your studies going?
PhD in pure maths at Princeton. Currently studying for my general exam (1-4 hour oral exam on... lots of maths). Stressed but hopefully I'll pass.
Why have you chosen to undertake university study as opposed to other career pathways (e.g. tafe, working fulltime etc)?
I enjoy research and teaching. A job in academia allows me to combine the two. A PhD is my pathway to that job.
What is the purpose of your life?
Professionally? Same as for the first question - to further mathematical research (and perhaps to mould young minds).
What do you hope to achieve in 15-20 years time? Where do you see your life heading?
Hopefully a tenured professor at a decent university somewhere.
When did you figure out that you wanted to do the course you're doing now?
In my first year of uni. Up until that point I thought I might end up anything, possibly a maths teacher. After taking a course in real analysis, I realised that I liked the idea of teaching but not something less advanced than uni maths.
Are you happy with the direction your life is heading now?
Yes, but there's a lot of uncertainty in my future - basically, for academia you can't be picky about where you want to work, so I could end up anywhere and may well move around a lot at the beginning. I'm not certain how I feel about that.

Why did you do a masters of Phil before the Math PhD?
-
Why did you do a masters of Phil before the Math PhD?
Most likely because he didn't get admission to a PhD immediately after honours, and also because terms in the US tend to start in August/September, so an MPhil allows one to continue doing research work here whilst waiting to go overseas.
I and a friend are doing the same thing (though we will be in the MPhil for less than a year).

Yup, that's pretty much it. To get into US universities for a PhD you have to take the GRE, which is only available to take a few times a year in Australia, and by the time I looked into it, the test was all booked out. So I had to wait until the next application season (the year after honours) to take the GRE then apply for US unis.
I was actually enrolled in a PhD at ANU after I graduated honours, but then changed my enrollment to a MPhil once I was accepted into Princeton.
