Just out of curiosity, what would one have to do and require to transfer from science to biomed?
-
The University makes the majority of undergraduate offers at the main intake at the start of the year, however a number of courses also accept applications for mid-year entry. In 2013 the following courses will accept applications for semester 2 entry:
Agriculture
Arts
Commerce
Environmental Horticulture
Environments
Science
Details about the likely entry standards required will be published on this page by May 2013.
Please note that applications to defer commencement are not accepted at mid-year.

we are pretty full in biomed :-\
-
Don't do it, it's a trap!
-
But why
-
Since you're stuck in Science for a whole year, surely you can just do the major/subjects to get you through to the Doctor of Medicine?
-
Bio medicine is over-hyped we only have one major that science students cannot do. Only real benefit I see is that all the subjects needed for medicine are compulsory and set in the course unlike science.
-
In my opinion (and just an opinion) Biomedicine as a degree is largely the creation of the marketing department. There are no secret handshakes, everything you learn in biomed, you can learn in science. If you're learning about the cardiovascular system, it's not like they'll teach the biomed kids how the heart works and leave you out if you're in science. If you take physiology in science, it'll be similar to what the biomed kids learn.
You have very little choice and all your subjects are chosen for you and mashed together. Science gives you a lot more freedom not only in pursuing your direction of what you study but just in general structure as well.
-
Biomed is a good thing to consider if you're applying to a science course for the first time (eg transfer from another field, straight from high school) but I can't fathom why you would bother transferring if you were in Science. Sure, there are some subjects that are only open to Biomed kids but it's really not worth it when you already have a confirmed place that gives you 90% of the subjects and 100% more freedom.
-
I agree with mavis, transferring isn't worth the effort once you're already enrolled. Biomedicine does have benefits over science and does certain things better but it's not worth what will be a massive hassle to convince them to match subjects and so forth.
-
i was told that the prereqs we have to do in second year of biomed to get in to the doctor of med is built in to the course, but there are limited spots so many science students cant do them?
-
Science students can't do the second year biomed subjects at all, they're not available as breadth/electives. Instead, they do the generic anatomy/physiology/biochem 201 subjects. Anatomy is quota restricted apparently, so there is the small possibility of not getting in.
-
The possibility of you not getting in to Anatomy would involve you having an average somewhere around the range of <60%. An average. And if that's the case I think you'll be missing out on the Melbourne MD based on your GPA rather than not taking a prereq...SORRY TO BE HARSH.
