Title: What next?
Post by: DesiAussie on May 15, 2013, 06:14:08 pm
Hi guys,

I have got into a science related degree at Deakin University. I was wondering what to do next. I really want to become a doctor. But i slack off certain times. I don't know what to do next. Do i sit the GAMSAT next year or do I transfer to a more 'presitgious' degree like Biomed or Science at UoM or Monash? please help

much obliged :)

Assuming you're in the first year of uni: you sit the GAMSAT next year.

You don't have to change courses as I'm pretty sure you can do the UoM MD prereq subjects from Deakin :) Deakin and Monash grad entry programs don't have prereqs (to my knowledge).

Good luck!

Do you think that my prospects of getting into medicine will be increased further if I were to do undergrad in Melbourne? I heard that Melbourne University Biomed students have the highest rates of getting into MBBS.  I dont mind loosing a year to be honest.

I don't think you need to change your course.  The reason why Melbourne Uni biomed students have the highest rates (assuming it is true) of getting into MBBS is that their ATAR was relatively high compared to those who entered Deakin Biomed at their year level (so they tend to be more hard working).  However, if you study hard (instead of "slack of certain times", I am sure studying at Deakin would not minimize your chance of getting into medicine.

Wait, by "MBBS" are you saying you're not applying for the UoM MD?

What i mean is post-grad medicine. I am willing to sacrifice a year because I feel that a degree from UoM is prestigious.  Do you think that it is foolish?

Maybe someone like Russ can clarify here, but I don't think they look at the "prestige" of your undergrad degree when determining graduate-entry positions.

However, if you don't get into medicine etc, and are looking to apply for a job r higher education with your undergrad degree, my guess is that a UoM degree may be looked upon more favorably?

@DesiAussie  What year are you in?  If you are first year, you can apply for some med schools as a non-standard, such as JCU, UADEL and UTAS.

Hi I am in 1st year university. I don't think my ATAR was good enough to get into the med schools you listed.
Does UoM Or Monash Biomed look into your ATAR if you transfer at the end of the year?
