Hi, I am trying out for MHS in a couple of weeks and I was just wondering, during the test are you allowed scrap paper, and I got a 41 on the maths practise test, will that be a high enough grade to get through?
-
Also I aced the reading comprehension, got 44 out of 50 on Numerical Reasoning and 58 out of 60 on Verbal Reasoning.

No scrap paper in my day, but you can write on the booklet, enough room there.
Hard to say. Raw scores mean nothing (although your ones appear to be high which is a good sign!), it's how that raw score compares to everyone else that determines how good you have done.
Best of luck with it, and honour the work :)
-
Thanks, I was not sure on how they ranked you with your end score.
-
Thanks, I was not sure on how they ranked you with your end score.
My understanding is they rank you via your raw score for each test, not for all tests combined.
Really not worth worrying about, just do your best in each of them and you'll stand a good chance.

How many words should I have in the persuasive writing test? And does it count more on quantity or quality?
-
Hey ! :)
I remember I did a page and a 1/4 ! QUALITY! :)
Good luck!
-
Quality is greater than quantity :) yah, no scrap paper.
All the best! :)
-
Thanks guys I shall practice those both, so quantity AND quality! :D
-
Sacrifice quantity for quality.
There's no point rambling on for 2-3 pages, when you can have a more simple, concise argument which is a lot easier to understand, and seems more logical. I wrote one and a half pages for each essay and that was sufficient. With my handwriting, I can probably fit around 300 words a page - so I guess a word length of around 400-600 words is okay.
Your practise grades seem high, but ultimately it all comes down to how you feel on the day. Just don't worry about the numbers game and try do the best you can.
Also, in 2008 I remember that we weren't given scrap paper to use during the exam (had to write in the exam booklet) - but maybe things have changed since I did the test.
-
Thank you Shenz0r this knowledge is very valuable and I hope it pays off when I do the test :)
-
I concur, 400-600 words is a good length. You are only yr8's after all :)
-
Also, on an unrelated note, what time does MHS start the average school day?
-
Back in my day, I think the start was 8.50am
-
Thank you.
-
Also, do they still notify you if you don't get through?
-
Also, do they still notify you if you don't get through?
Yeah they notify you regardless of your status (E.g Accepted, not accepted, PD etc.)
Generally it's an 8-10 week wait if I remember correctly...
-
Back in my day, those who got in got the letter a couple of days before (I got my acceptance letter on my birthday, not a bad present! :D - mid-Aug).
-
Results generally get released in mid-August, I don't know about kids who got offers receiving their letter early though, we all got it at around the same time?
Nowadays I hear that results are released on e-mail.

Shows how old I am LOL

Haha yeah results are released through e-mail although they send an e-mail with a button to another webpage which will tell you whether you made it or not (if I'm not mistaken). Second (and third) round offers happen later though (my friend got accepted into Suzzane Cory just before or at the start of September back then).

You're pretty much Harry Potter except you were 14 instead of 11 and there was no Hagrid.
-
Thanks guys, I was worried that I'd just sit there and wait for nothing (that is if I don't get through).

We got ours via telegram

With the Creative Writing piece does it need to be paragraphed?

Since its creative writing you can write whatever you want, you could write a haiku. But most ppl write a narrative with paragraphs.
-
Okay, thanks Biohazard :)
-
Is the actual exam harder than the practise ones?
-
The practise tests on the DEECD site are to give you a "taste" of what the real exam is like. So it's meant to be harder.
-
Thanks Shenzor, I just wasn't that sure about it :)
-
But I read somewhere (cannot remember where) that they are quite similar, just phrased differently.
-
The practise tests on that website are really similar, the formating mainly. I think that test was from the 2008 entrance - on the bottom of the page they say "Edutest 2008" so, my assumption ::)
-
Thank you Butterscotch, and should I be stressed over this exam? Because I realize that it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I can't stop thinking that I am going to fail :-\

Read what I just posted here.
You can still get entry in Year 10 and Year 11. Also, Nossal, Suzanne Cory and JMSS are very good schools as well.
-
Eliz Blackburn will also be up and around by the time you are in yr10 too. Plenty of options!

I can see where you're going with this, it's a natural feeling I suppose. Don't be too strained about this. It's only a school, keep it in mind. There'll be more opportunities as Shenz0r said.
Stay to the positive and you'll do fine :) I sometimes talk to myself about stressful, upcoming events to make myself calmer and relaxed. Maybe that can help you? ;D
All the best! :D

Stressing doesn't get you anywhere mate. You've worked hard, there's not much else you can do at this point except for have faith in yourself and staying composed so that your hard work doesn't go to waste.
Manage your time well on the day, have a nice breakfast, make sure you rest up and you'll be set.
-
Thanks guys, also should I have done tutoring? I feel that I wanted to (but couldn't owing to funds), and over 4 students from my year level at my school did and they all sound really confident.

Confidence does not always translate to success.
All the best for tomorrow!

Thanks Shenzor, and I am not afraid of not getting in :D

That's the spirit mate! You're heading to the right way! Stay positive ;D
All the best! ^_^

Thanks Butterscotch ;D
-
The questions in the exam were actually a lot harder, but I still think I went quite well on all of the tests.
-
That's great to hear, I hope you did well to go through ;D
