Title: French Revolution History SAC
Post by: bobcat48 on June 04, 2013, 09:51:27 am
Hello everyone! I have a History SAC coming up and was just wondering if you geniuses could give me some tips, juicy information and overall help with preparing for my SAC. My SAC question is "The French Revolution was strongly rejected by some groups in society, yet supported by others. However, in the end it failed to satisfy anyone. Do you agree?" It has to be 800-1000 words, written in 100 minutes. I want to perfect it and write a couple of practices. My SAC is next week. Thank you!

Wow! I'm doing the exact same topic! We don't go to the same school, do we? (Camperdown, Victoria)
It's a pretty straightforward topic. I'm going to write about how overall, the bourgeoisie came out on top. They were the only group that can be said to have "won" out of the Revolution. Remember, pre-Revolution they were wealthy, but powerless. Now they're wealthy and hold all the power.
As far as not satisfying anyone:
- Conservative nobility lost everything (often inc. their lives)
- Civil Constitution of the Clergy alienated Catholics and non juring priests.
- Peasants were still starving in 1795. So was most of Paris.
- The sans-culottes were ok up until the death of Robespierre and the other radicals in The Convention. By 1795 their radicalism was not tolerated.
Maybe I'll mention that at some point in The Revolution, each group, especially the sans culottes and menu peuple, were "winners" in the Revolution, but were usually put back in their place due to the ever changing government. I don't know. Good luck!

Hello,
I have my essay SAC tomorrow and my topic is "Discuss the extent to which revolutionaries modified their original ideas. Provide evidence to support your answer'.
I have a plan and structure on how I will tackle the question.
My worry is historiography. How many quotes and how long should be in include in order to score highly both sac and exam)?

I don't know about the exam, but I've been using one to two short quotes in each paragraph, usually from Schama, Rudé, Doyle and McPhee in my SACs and essays. I don't think it's necessary to always direct quote, either. You can say "According to..." and then put small direct quotes in quotation marks.
e.g.
Simon Schama, a revisionist historian, believes that violence acted as the "motor" of the Revolution.

Different teachers will have different ideas of what is right, and after all it is them you need to impress, at least for the SACs anyway. Just follow whatever format your teacher prefers. As for the exam? No idea.

For me at least, whenever I asserted my own view or whatever, I would always try to back it up with some important statistic/event/quote. Usually totalled like 4-6 points per paragraph in the essays, 2-3 points on average on historiography. Just keep in mind that these  important statistics/events/quotes have to underpin whatever you state in the exam and in SACs, showing that there's a basis for why you view a certain thing a certain way. As long as you understand this, there's no real magic number lol
