Title: Good Luck for the GAT!
Post by: Mr Keshy on June 11, 2013, 11:48:01 am
Good luck to everyone for the GAT tomorrow! :)

I know that around here, the GAT always seems to be laughed about quite frequently, but please keep in mind that if the unexpected were to happen come exam time in November, the test you'll be doing tomorrow WILL play a major role in determining what final score you will recieve.

The GAT is compulsory so you will be sitting in there for 3 hours whether you like it or not, so why not give it your best shot?! You have nothing to lose and possibly a lot to gain from it if you take it seriously, so why not take the opportunity?

Take the GAT seriously but don't stress over it!

Once again, Good Luck and Have Fun! :)

In all seriousness. I actually did do a few multiple choice questions to get an idea of what to expect, but that's all.

Is anyone else planning on doing the multiple choice first and then writing pieces? Unlike what VCAA suggest. I feel like 30 mins for each piece is to short so will do MC as quick as I can.  And then divide remaining time between writing pieces.

Nah, I'm going to complete the writing sections first. 30 minutes is only the recommended time. If you think it's too short, then you can spend more time on your essays.  In my opinion, I think that 30 minutes is a reasonable amount of time.

Apparently those who achieve high results for their GATs usually complete a MINIMUM of 10-15 practice GAT exams....so, you're almost there.

So there's a good 18 hours till the GAT which takes 3 hours to do so if I can squeeze in 6 practices I'll be good yeah?

I did that last year. The upside is that I aced the multi-choice. The downside is that by the time I got to the writing tasks, I was feeling ceebs about it all and wrote a couple of bullshit pieces. My writing score was not that high. :P

You guys have it easy, my school forced everyone to stay back to do a full past years GAT in exam conditions, THEN MADE US TAKE IT HOME AND MARK IT OURSELVES, and no classes today, we had to listen to teacher lectures on how to correctly interpret the questions and answer them, "GAT Preparation Day"
My school will dominate

PS we're all only year 11's LOL

This is probably a stupid question but I have no idea how to write a good essay (well 2 essays technically) for the gat! I did the gat last year with no preparation at all and uh.. needless to say the writing section was really bad.. :/ Can anyone post one of their practice ones up? Or is there a place with sample gat essays already? Thanks heaps guys! (I know this is really really late... :/ )

I just ask people what would happen if on the day of your English exam, while you're getting out of the car, your mum closes the door on your writing hand by accident.

This is why I am going to take the GAT seriously, although I've done no preparation for it ahaha.

Good luck.
Even if you don't want to prepare for it, you'd be a fool not to just go briefly read over the writing components. It really helps to sit down and think about what you'd write about for the previous GATs, just so it comes easier for this upcoming one.

Also just skim over the multiple choice questions to get an understanding of what may be examined in the 2013 GAT.

Best of luck

The first essay is just testing your ability to rearrange, organise and connect pieces of information together. During reading time, identify three major subtopics within the major topic (for your three body paragraphs) and essentially regurgitate the information provided correctly and in a manner that makes logical sense. This task isn't too difficult, but some people do silly things like state where on the page the information is from, or if the information was provided on a graph or something. Don't show off and do anything too fancy here, unless the topic really lends itself to something other than an essay (for example, a few people took on the persona of David Attenborough for the wolves task). Also, this is just to assess your ability to present information in a user-friendly manner, so remain objective throughout your piece.

The second essay is much harder in my opinion. You are provided with four stimulus statements and you have to write a piece of prose presenting your point of view, basing your argument on the provided prompts. In the three times I have now sat a GAT paper (two trials and the official GAT last year), I have adopted a diary entry style simply because I have essentially no real evidence to back up any arguments I may make in a conventional essay. To be honest, more often than not, I've had to force myself to have some sort of opinion on the provided topic. I must add that you do not need to directly respond to each statement or focus solely on one statement. They are provided as a basis for you to start your writing, much like a context response in English.

I recently did the 2011 paper as a trial and the persuasive response required me to write about fashion and beauty. This was not something I could identify with at all. :P In the end I adopted the persona of a teenage girl who was being bullied because she didn't wear the latest fashion trends and wrote a diary entry about a particular experience of being bullied (and giving into the bullies) and how I felt the way society was moving. I got a 9/10 for this by an external examiner so it's a style that I have stuck with.

Also, your responses do not need to be long! One teacher was shocked that I wrote three pages for each response given the fact that we are only supposed to spend 30 minutes on each task. I have heard anecdotally that one and a half to two pages should suffice.

I'm really curious to know, how does each section affect the 3 different results in the GAT? Are the 2 written pieces represented by the written communication bit, the maths by 35 mc and humanities by the other 35 mc?

And also, don't hate, but what sort of style of writing do I use for the first written piece and the second one? Just want to know so I can do it properly tomorrow, because I did not take it seriously at all last year and I need to this year just in case of anything happening during VCAA exam period  :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH! That really cleared up a lot for me! :)
But um.. last year I found it really hard to make my essay flow and embed a lot of the information presented. I'm more of a science/maths type person so english is not my strongest point which is probably why I couldn't do it. Maybe I will write one now and try to find some way to 'make it flow'. Hopefully I'll find some techniques that will work for me tomorrow.
And for the second essay, I never thought about a diary entry! That would make my life so much easier! I think I will stick to that I guess. Thank you again! You are a legend! :)

Possibly. Having a look through the 2011/12 GAT's, and its really just general stuff. I mean they give you all the information you need to know, and you have to have your brain on, think, interpret and answer.

Maybe someone who scored highly can give us a sample response to what they did (as well as including the prompt).
Not sure if this has been asked, but I think it would cool to get a rough idea of what to expect in the GAT.

edit; Say you're going to write a persuasive essay for the 2nd task. Do you need to include a written explanation?

So just to clarify:

Section A writtten piece:
- Write an expository essay using the information provided without presenting an argument.

Section B written piece:
- Write a piece presenting an argument about a particular point of view.

Is there a word limit; will 700-800 words be sufficient per piece?

Hello Everyone!

Happy 'GAT Eve' as my English Teacher likes to call it. :p Below are some tips and comments that my English Teacher gave me for the GAT. This is her second Year as a GAT Assessor.

Good Luck!

Damoz.

WRITING TASK 1
Low-Range Response
* Brief
* Disorganised
* No structure of the material
* Limited understanding of the material

Mid-Range Response
* Attention to material
* Lack of structure and synthesis of material

High-Range Response
* Good control of material
* Demonstrates a good understanding on the material
* Sophisticated vocabulary
* DOES NOT START AT THE TOP LEFT CORNER AND GO AROUND THE PAGE TO TRY AND GET ALL THE INFORMATION INTO THE PIECE.

WRITING TASK 2
* Develops a very good line of argument
* Has a strong 'voice'

In Writing Task 2, I think the main thing to note is that you do not have to write an essay. e.g. A speech is completely acceptable.

Hope this helps you out a bit.

Yes, correct on both accounts.

No word limit, but try to aim for around 500 words. You only have 30 minutes on each task, so they aren't expecting a lot from you.

All ready for the GAT now lol, just a little confused about part 1. I've tried to write an essay, I just always find myself retelling the information.
Are we allowed to use minimal general knowledge, for example:
'Mt Everest, the worlds largest and greatest mountain'
'Only few were able to climb it'

Finished.
I wrote a long essay for the first section and a letter from an elderly staff member to his boss who is forcing elderly staff to retire. Thoughts?

I didn't find the maths parts hard but those arts and social science questions were difficult.

Section 1 was about media, radios, internet.
Section 2 had four statements "with age come experience, understanding and insight", "there is no fool like an old fool", "older people ought to retire and let younger people with ideas and energy into the workforce" and "the young have as much to teach the old as the old have to teach the young"

For the second part, I wrote about a conversation between an old man and his grandson, highlighting the cynicism of the old age.

But for me, the GAT wasn't at all "general" hahaha.

The problem is that mine was only around 350 words long, maybe a bit more. Is this enough? Felt adventurous so wrote my first ever letter, lol.

I just did about 2 pages for the first writing piece, then about 1.5 for the persuasive piece, I just kept running out of ideas..

Anyway the MC was okay, I had to refer to my dictionary a fair bit though, a lot of fancy words were used, :o

And the humanities questions were terrible. There was poetry. There were quotes. There were these pictures. Terrible, terrible and terrible.

Why were there no technology questions? :/

It was gruelling. Don't think I've ever sat a 3 hour exam.. lol

I actually liked the writing tasks! Last year it was all like 'ehhh I'm a mountain' this year I was all like 'TESLA, RADIOS, SPACE EXPLORATION, ALIENS and the INTERNET, YEAH!'

And for the second piece I wrote a motivational speech from a past student to a group of graduating software developers, about why they are of more value in a changing field than 'experienced' elder developers. It ended with 'ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to change the world.'
Yeah I may have inspired myself a little :')

Three things irked me:
1. wtf at the shape selection process thingo (i completely forgot what it's called) wasted all this time trying to understand the logic of the two flowcharts. If it has 'curves' then go get a hexagon, etc. I was like pulling my hair out at it.
2. What was with that story about "Mother City" Q: Why did they leave "mother city" for the suburbs?
3. Find the no. of triangles big, med and small to fill in the BLACK area. yeah, that makes things not confusing, the triangles were black as well!

I found the family with like 5 languages a fun one to do though.

The topics for the writing were pretty good. I had heaps of fun writing a creative for the second topic. :)
The multiple choice was okay. I got stuck on the height question, like the shoulder height ,etc. , the maths was alright compared to last year and the humanities component was okay too.

AND OMG THE LAST 5-6 QUESTIONS ...doing those questions was the best part! :)

1) took me a while to understand the shape selection also, I instantly thought it would also start at the bottom then move up, but it worked it's way around the flowchart..
2) had no idea why they left the suburb, that whole passage was really hard to understand in my opinion.

glib insincerity?

The Mathematics component was actually quite easy :) Some intricate words were used in the answers; however, nothing that a dictionary cannot define lol. Overall, a good first GAT for me. I'm not sure whether its because I spent a bit longer on the written pieces than suggested, but I finished with only about 5 minutes to spare. Luckily I completed the paper!

I felt that I guessed about 15 questions, 50-50 with majority of those 50. And I feel as though my first piece was more coherently structured than my persuasive pieece. I reckon its because I awoke to the realisation that I had spent longer than suggested on the first written response.

Probably my final post here but there were some questions that just irritated me;
1) The flowchart with the shapes. So frustrating and confusing.
2) The one with the triangles confused me a bit. I wasn't sure about the last two questions, I probably just wasn't thinking lol.
3) Poems were hard to understand. I'm anti-poetic, It's like Julia Gillard being forced to marry Tony Abott, that's how I feel reading a poem.

Here's what I really liked:
1) Writing section 1 was really good.
2) Writing section 2 was GREAT. Felt like there were so many options to write about.
3) Most of the maths parts were easy and challenging

The only hint I came across in that piece was that Mother City had crowded streets or something so my answer ended up being unsustainable or something like that. Too much interpretation needed imo.
There was:
a) too serious, suburb had rustic charm
b) predicatble, stimulation from suburb
c) unsustainable, the suburb offer an alternative
d) too materialistic, sought spirituality

it said "packed streets that drove us to this suburb" so I assumed it was overcrowded or somethun.. ahhh those were the sorts of questions that annoyed me.

You'll get your GAT results with your Study Scores at the end of the year.

For each of the three sections, you'll get your mark (I think English is out of 20, the other sections being out of 35), and then a scaled score. So just like study scores, this scaled "GAT" score can go to 50, and your score is based on the performance of everyone else.

If you DO SERIOUSLY SHIT on your GAT, but ace the Exams + SACS, will VCAA think you cheated or something o.o?
So as long as I do fine on my exam + Sacs, my S.S will be fine regardless of GAT score?

How is GAT involved in scaling then?

So if you do terrible on your gat.. your S.S will scale down?

I know that GAT is sometimes used in uni selection.. since I'm in yr 11... this year's results won't even matter right?

LOL Because I think I was too chill in the GAT and I need some piece of mind.. :D

probs been asked a million times before but is the GAT only used for when you miss an exam or does it have an effect on subject scaling anyway?

for that question with the family in the car I said 'conventional and self-contained' and 'be remote from it'

struggled with question 20, said the casino reference was based on HFT firms requiring good luck

screwed up Q28, said the police/fire gave their patience fewer medications that paramedics

my understanding of casinos is that they have the odds in their favour enough so that over time they will end up profiting, even if they lose a bunch of money to some random. probability pretty much ensures that they'll always come out on top. the thing with HFT that i got from that extract was that it works by going for little profits not risky, larger tradeoffs, and as a result ends up benefitting in the long run. that's why I chose 'guarantees profits to operators'

Did anyone else's stomach sound like a dying whale by the end of it?

I ate sooooo much just before the exam to avoid this. 2 bananas, 1 milo bar, milkshake, packet of biscuits, a lot of water in like 2 minutes.

yeah I thought the same thing but the mentioning of casino AS FAR AS I REMEMBER was in a sentence explaining that the operators didn't understand the actual workings of the algorithms and therefore it was more about luck to them than strategy or some SHIET.

Hi. I love your avatar.

Also, don't choose "c", choose "A, C, D, C" (2011 GAT - earned me one of the worst in the  state \o/)

Ditto was my childhood ahaha. As soon as I caught one in Pokemon Emerald I spent like a week leveling it up so that I could mimic any super strong Pokemon in battle. It would take forever to defeat them though because of the not very effective situation.

And LOL!
I actually wasn't feeling "c" that much today so, I think I guessed "b" for a couple questions. ;)

I had trouble with that one too, especially the last part of the questions for that series. I think you had to match the number from the picture to that in the graph. So, for example 888 could be 77.1 in the x percentile but for the y percentile it could be 87.2. It was like matching stuff.
But yes, I feel really stupid seeing everyone seems to know the answers. haha.

I liked this GAT's writing tasks better and thought the Maths questions were easier than last years, but the humanities/english questions were terrible. That "Outer Suburbs" poem just didn't resonate with me at all (neither did that cultural phenomenon painting).

How could the seat height be calculated? I said it couldn't be done, but I'd love to see how it could actually be done, for interest's sake.

I chose that it couldn't be done as well but whenever I went over previous GATs, the answer was never "cannot be done", so I'm just heavily assuming that this year for the first time ever they've made the answer "cannot be done", lol.

And I answered conventional and self contained for the picture as well, I changed it in the last 5 minutes though!

Some people do 1 line then leave a gap, I was shocked last year when I saw people did like 16 pages in total for the english exam, and then I read on and they left a line empty, I think it makes it easier for the examiners or something..

The question asks for the value of the difference between the height of the shoulder above the ground and the height of the seat about the ground. 751 + 312 gives 62cm. But it asks for the difference between that height and the height between the seat and the ground. How can it be C?

I had a thumping headache and a sore body. I was fatigued. I was literally sprawled over the table at one stage trying to recover because I forgot my glasses in my locker and after about an hour, everything started becoming a blur. I definitely think there were a few questions that I just quickly skipped because (a) I had no energy to think and (b) I was eager to just finish it and sleep. Oh well, I'm not angry/disappointed with my performance. Just hope its not really going to be such a big factor in my study score determination for Further Maths + Bio.

But how does that make a difference? If you take that into consideration;

Pattern 1 - 1/0
Pattern 2 - 2/3
Pattern 3 - 3/6
Pattern 4 - 4/10
Pattern 5 - 5/15
Pattern 6 - 6/21

Add all the whites up and you have 55, if the next pattern requires 28 whites, it's still impossible.

I don't know if I'm not understanding something simple... ahha

Pattern 3 - 3/6
Pattern 4 - 4/10
Pattern 5 - 5/15
Pattern 6 - 6/21

Add all the whites up and you have 55, if the next pattern requires 28 whites, it's still impossible.

I don't know if I'm not understanding something simple... ahha

Well, doing this again now, the table I get is:
Pattern Number - (Black/White)
P1 - 1/0
P2 - 2/1
P3 - 3/3
P4 - 4/6
P5 - 5/10
P6 - 6/15
P7 - 7/21
P8 - 8/28
When you add all whites up to P7, you get 56.
If you go up to P8, you get 84 white counters. They've specified that there's only 70 available. :/

Just a protip guys: you'e all MUCH better off going back to VCE study rather than worrying about the answers to a test that doesn't really matter anyway :P ;)

People keep saying that it doesn't really matter which does nothing to alleviate the stress. It doesn't matter at all, full stop, unless you can't sit an exam or you're doing a folio subject, and even then it has minimal influence. I'd rather the VCAA just got rid of it to be honest, it only serves to take a day away from the kids and cause them unnecessary worry and concern, which God(s) knows they get enough of already.

my teachers told me that the GAT does effect scaling regardless of whether you miss an exam. WHYYYYYYYYY

Yeah it does, but it's such a minute effect. Really nothing to worry about.

I'm actually a bit worried that people in this thread seem worried about the GAT :/

the above two posts just got me worried, so it does have an effect on your marks? what if I got a few wrong on the maths section? this could be bad.

Don't worry!

The cohort GAT, not your individual GAT is used (in part) for scaling. It is not the sole determinant and in the larger scheme of things your own GAT doesn't really contribute much at all to it.

I agree that the GAT should be abolished. It's stupid like anything.

Just to confirm: the GAT can NOT lower your scores.

It can NOT ruin your VCE.

It is NOT worth stressing over.

:)

Ok so it can only be beneficial for me. Hooray.

Would you mind sharing your multiple choice answers with me?

I'm collecting  answers from several people on this forum so I can show them  side by side (anonymously) with the hope of being able to show which answers are "most likely" to be correct. We did this a few years back and it worked well as most people posting on this site tend tend to score well above the average so it's fairly reliable :-)

My email is   [email protected]

I've never seen or heard any actual evidence as to it having an effect on scaling. If my school didn't take it seriously (one of the top achieving ones) I'm not going to either, beyond just 'doing my best' and then not giving a darn afterwards.

I don't think the GAT has an effect on scaling by VTAC. Pretty sure that is just done by the shape of the bell curve in each subject.

The GAT does however play a roll in the statistical moderation of SACs (for an ever increasing number of subjects, according to VCAA) and obviously plays a part in the DES as well as checking whether exam marks are accurate based on what can be predicted from the GAT as well as what's predicted from SAC marks and the teacher's indicative grade.

At the end of the day the GAT can only help you so it's in your best interest to try your best, it's really not that long and at least it provides for a break from full on study in the middle of the year in it's current form.

I make no promises that my answers are correct, but I'll inbox them to you anyway.

Give me a minute to type them out.

Any chance you can post them publicly or send them to me as well?

Scaling of SACs? Yes. Scaling of the subject? No.

Yep I know, it just seems like a few in this thread are freaking out after reading the first line or so of some posts and are then jumping to outlandish conclusions, just reaffirming your correct point :)

Good explanation on what the GAT does and how it affects SACS.
