if everything was exactly the same in all (quantifiable) senses, pay, benefits, hours, etc. obviously things like stress and health hazards couldnt all be the same.
just curious to see what people want to do, and what factors have lead to you pursuing/not pursuing it?
-
Bike courier...love road cycling. I'd do it but you get paid in pennies.
-
Working in the gaming industries or big software design firms seems like pretty interesting beta tester maybe.
-
Human rights lawyer, then teaching.
-
Author +/- doctor
-
Defs teacher because I always think ill do a better job than mine!
-
Chem teacher or researcher.
-
Film/food critic, sports commentator, researcher, trader, teacher... the list goes on lol
-
some law stuff working overseas (possibly human rights if there was demand), or something in the publishing industry
-
Film critic.
-
food critic
-
Part-time doctor and part-time paleontologist
-
fiction author
-
Where would I even start!?
-
academic researcher
-
concert pianist
or official interpreter for the UN, Nicole Kidman style
-
Hm. I'm going to assume the demand for all jobs is equal as well.... In that case, an author (fiction), or something to do with animal rights protection :)
-
Doctor or something related to medical research
-
Photographer or Graphic Designer
-
Professional SC2 Player
the broken dreams :'(
-
I'd say film or food critic

Such a shame that a lot of these professions wouldn't exist in a fully socialist country. :(

Which jobs are you referring to? Why do you think that they wouldn't exist?
According to the definition of socialism as a system in which the means of production are owned by the workers, I can't see any jobs mentioned that would become obsolete.
-
This discussion about socialism is getting far too intellectual for my standard 8)

Water slide tester.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/student-lands-20000-a-year-water-slide-1854381
In all seriousness something health-related and hands on, but I still don't know!

Professional SC2 Player

Holy moly yes! That would be awesome to be a water slide tester!
Also with health and being hands on, have you considered OT?
-
ASTRONAUT

hey walkec, i've actually had someone suggest that to me (my mum), definitely looks great in terms of the workers enjoying their job except i don't think it would suit me though
-
Gamer.
-
I've got so many things I'd like to do! Firstly I'd probably want to the writing thing and write novels and screenplays and theatre and maybe journalism. And then writing and performing music/musical theatre. Acting would also be great, as well as human rights work (outside of having to study law) on top of everything else.
In terms of working at places, imagine being at somewhere like Disney/Pixar? I wouldn't mind doing anything at all, it'd just be so cool being there haha. Or any number of film studios.
For the people who are working or planning on working in fields other than what they've listed here, it'd be interesting to find out what the reasons for that are.
-
Because I can't eat and be a human rights lawyer at the same time =[
-
Pro Gamer
-
Professional motorsport driver and owner of a massive automobile shop specialising in JDM! :D
Hopefully I can achieve one of these in my lifetime. Or both!!
-
Any other specific areas?
Have you looked at prosthetics?
-
My dream job would involve finding a cure to Autism, but what that job is, I really don't know.

Accountant.
-
exactly the same as what I am hoping/going to pursue now.
Electric Engineer, then later on becoming a professor
or
a professional ballroom dancer
-
Bed-tester (I'd love to be paid to test various beds... and get to sleep every day...)
Or being a food-taster wouldn't be too bad...
I love food. And sleeping.
*nods head vigorously*
And I'm clearly a dreamer, because it is highly unlikely that I will get either of those jobs. :(
-
Aerospace engineer. Or maybe human rights activist or something like that
-
So money is the only reason, so far? Anything else?
-
Sleeper.
I'd sleep a 40 hour work week.
Current occupational goal: either research or becoming an awesome doctor, can't decide.
One of those seems a particularly stark contrast to my job of choice.
-
So money is the only reason, so far? Anything else?
Seems like a pretty legit reason, there are a bunch of things I'd love to do but have zero job market and bad pay rates
-
A bummer. I work round the clock
-
The reason I would not become a teacher even though its my dream job would probably have to do with the social side to it. People don't expect me to become a teacher. But also I'd like to do things that impact society on a larger scale eg renewable energy engineer, medical researcher who doesn't expect anything lol.
-

Oh no doubt, just curious as to what the other major deterrent factors in people not going for their 'dream job'.
-
Academic.

my dream job would probably to be a detective or something like professor layton :P
but professors of archaeology dont uncover those sorts of mysteries,
and real life detectives complain about the hours soo much, and it would suck working like 70-80 hours a week on <80k with a wife and 2 kids
-
Prime Minister.
Someone's got to lead :)
-

I reckon for me experience is holding me back. I can't be bothered working in a job which I hate just to get into one that I want. For example I reckon it would be awesome to work in special forces, however I don't want to have to be in the army for 4 years first, I'd want to be straight in haha
-
Motivational speaker or pro counter strike source player/or TF2! :D
-
oooooooh I forgot soccer player. Honestly there are too many possibilities.
-
Well I love to play football but I'm pretty shit at it lol... So if I were to just play football for my current club and division, then hell yeah!
But if I was put into the AFL or even VFL... Hell no! lol
Hmm, I'd love to just play online games/playstation all day and get paid for it too though
There's so many things lol
I'd love to do something that didn't require me to do 'homework' (like I'd love to teach, but the whole idea of having to go home and mark exam papers and plan notes for the next day.... hell naw)
-
Not really sure. Probably a computational physicist of some description (chemical physics, geophysics, etc). Or some sort of foray into politics as a faceless man.
-
astronomer, photographer, doctor/paramedic, beauty/fashion blogger .. i would probably continuously change jobs lols XD
-
Motivational speaker - that's a cool one! Has anyone else met/been to a lecture by Darren Pereira? My school has him come down like 3 times over everyone's 6 years haha.
-
A pilot, without a doubt :)
-
Prime Minister.
Someone's got to lead :)
This.
"Someone's got to lead?" That'll be me, thanks.
jk.
Also wouldn't mind being a part-time procrastinator at work, since there aren't any pressures 8)
-
My dream job would involve finding a cure to Autism, but what that job is, I really don't know.
Wouldn't that be a career in Neuroscience (of some sort..) ?
I looked into that before I realized that there was a need to travel and work in major institutions to have a higher chance of success. Experience is also one of the more significant factors in this job, compared to other careers in Science.
-
Did I mention:
I WANT
TO PREDICT
THE STOCK MARKET!
But sadly, no idea on how to do so...yet.
-
translator, forensic scientist, journalist -- I'd be happy with any of these three
-
Investment banking analyst in M&A (Mergers & Acquisitions).
-
Spend my life in a studio writing stories for games, coming up with worlds and characters and maps and quests and lore, and actually developing these games too.
OR
Writing manga, that'd be sweet, if only I could draw :')
-
I think that I'd still end up in engineering somewhere, more towards motorsport, although high-school teaching maybe as well (it still sits in the back of my mind a little, and well with my sister and her bf being teachers I guess there's a bit of influence there :P, I probably wouldn't be able to put up with the kids though)
-
high-school teaching maybe as well
the thing stopping me from becoming a high school teacher; 230/240 of the kids in my year don't want to be there... I'd love to teach the ones that want to learn though. Maybe a career somewhere else in education, working on something like khanacademy, that could be good!
-
-Working on Disney film projects or the alike haha
-or maybe mechanical/electrical/mechatronics/chemical/environmental engineering
-and nursing
-
1. Creative director at an animation movie studio such as Pixar, or at a gaming company like Naughty Dog.
2. Mercenary during an apocalypse.
3. Firefighter / Commando in Army.
-

-
cupcake decorator!! ::)
-
Chocolate tester! Diabetes day everyday! ;D :'(

-
Toss up between an Astronaut and a Federal Police Agent. Something which combines research, discovery and an awesome practical side to it would be my dream job.
-
Astronaut would be AMAZING!
Freelance programmer would be sweet.
But I'm probably end up as the guy who lives in his grandmothers basement researching over a mathematical theory that nobody really cares about...
-
NBA bench warmer. Brian Scalarbine 2.0!
-
A dream job is one in which you disregard the pay.
Eitherway I'd stick with my interest in the health sciences:)
-
I have noticed that there are plenty of jobs here that have decent to very good salaries. I am wondering whether this is because people have read the question differently or is there some quick way to become a millionaire that I am not aware of? Perhaps, sadly, this thread is full of too many smart people with not enough self-confidence (if lack of ability is the reason for why these careers are only considered as "dream" jobs). Or perhaps for most dream=reality and I don't have a point :P
-
The job I am currently studying for, to become a Human Rights Lawyer (specifically dealing with war crimes). Living the dream!
-
A linguist or a painter or a philosopher :P
-
Member of the coordinating committee in the ICNK.
-
Part of the ski patrol.
