Does anyone have any recommendations for good breadth subjects? I'm doing 1st year biomed so preferably low contact hours and easy assessment :)
-
Well, in first year I didn't do any first year breadth subjects. Instead I chose: Living Longer https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2012/UNIB30005.
Pretty easy if your good with writing an essay. Work throughout the semester is basically 0 - just once a week you write a blog about what you've learned from either the lecture, tutorial or even something that you've found interesting relating to the week's topic. There's also a wiki and a final essay. But, the good thing about the essay is that they provide the options from the start of semester - so get a head start, I finished mine during semester so that when exams came I didn't stress. Even better, is that you don't need any information from lectures or tutorials to write it. So, from day 1 you can start. And yeah ... I really liked the subject.
OR
There is this second year subject; Ecological history of Humanity https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2012/UNIB10003
I basically see it as the sister subject to living longer. Exactly the same format for assessment and essay is as well provided early on.
Both are breezy subjects, I highly recommend them and there is more information in the subject reviews on these...
Side note; the blogs take zero effort to write, each is worth 2 marks - as long as you say something interesting you'll get full marks.
-
Ecological history of humanity does look farly interesting but it is only a semester 1 subject :-\ Essay writing isn't my strongest asset so Idon't think I would enjoy doing a level 3 subject that has writing involved..
-
Sports coaching hands down is the easiest subject, and good mark, that I've ever done/received since year 6 at school. No joke, I can't recommend it enough!! :)
-
I've heard good stuff about Music and Health and Forests In A Global Context as well, both Lv2 subjects. They're not hard if you put a bit of effort into them, easy H1s.
-
is microeconomics a lot of work? I've heard mixed reviews from friends - some say they hated it but some say it's a very good subject. How about body mind and medicine a dissection?
-
I'm considering Body, Mind and Medicine too. Apparently some third years said it was a pretty good subject. Not sure about the workload but it should be similar to Ecological History of Humanity.
-
yeah it does seem pretty interesting from description and there's no exam in the assessment either which tempts me to hold off on doing it until 2nd year...

Is Introduction to Actuarial Studies a good breadth subject? https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2013/ACTL10001 I'm thinking of choosing it, even though, I'm not doing Commerce, and not majoring in Actuarial Studies. I just like it because of the maths and I did Calculus 2 in semester 1

I've heard good stuff about Music and Health
I did Music and Health and Music Psychology, they're pretty easy to get a H1 in and I didn't go to a single lecture so no contact hours. The essays don't require you to listen to the lectures (unless you like listening to your lecturer and classmates singing). Music Psych was easier, only 1 essay and 40% were weekly quizzes that were ridiculously easy to get full marks in. Music and Health has 2 essays, mid sem and end of sem. Can't recommend these subjects enough, helped during exam time so much by having 1 less exam to do.

I'm thinking of doing this too and I'm trying to find some resources for it like the textbook but there are none listed in the handbook. If anyone here has done it can you please list the texts you use or any materials, I want to have a look before diving into a subject that I might find boring.

Were either of those two subjects recorded? :)

which breadth is better to do in first year : Living Longer UNIB30005 or Body, Mind and Medicine UNIB20013

Have you done any level two subjects in the past? if so, i would try the level two breadth before going on to study level three.
