Title: Problem with Expression
Post by: robertcalder on June 24, 2013, 11:11:11 am
I've had 3 SACS so far this year for english and with every single essay the common problem I've had is expression. I've asked my teacher what exactly she means by expression but I can't grasp what she's explaining. Can anyone help me with fixing my expression for essays? It's the main reason I'm dropping marks on my essays and would like to improve on this. Thanks :)

You're going to have to show us give us some of your writing before we can help you :p So you should post some of your essays up so we can see what you can fix...

An alternative is to post what your teacher has said on here and we can help you understand them :)

And yes we will help you! :)

I have the same problem too!
I've asked my teacher about this. What 'expression' generally refers to is the usage of words and sentence structure.
To use an obvious example, you wouldn't say, 'morose day', you'd say' sad' or something like that. Even though morose and sad are kinda the same, you use them in difference contexts.
Sentence structure is just getting the order of words correct.

Basically how well you express your ideas in writing.

The best way to fix expression problems (mine used to be pretty bad as well) is to do as much critical reading on texts as you can, and then use them to bank new vocab words and phrases. Expanding your vocab and using a wide range of words is key to 'fluently' expressing your ideas. Things like punchy, original topic sentences and interesting introductions also help. And make sure to always embed quotes. Good luck! :)
