I found the numerical reasoning the easiest . The science reasoning was quite good ass well.
But the mathematics was quite hard circled last 8 questions.
For the essays i wrote about electricity thought that was ok (forgot to draw diagrams ) for the last part where i had to talk about structurew of an atom , ran out of time for the part (but rest was ok)/
For the second essay talked about evaporating the water and it being an endothermic reaction , gave a step by step guide on how to do it , forget to draw diagrams , but it was ok .
I think i did alright in general , might of /might of not got in , how did you guys find each test ? and how did you find the whole think in general?
and guys from what ive told you do you think i have a chance of getting an interview( honestly) dont have to be nice.
-
I prefer Mathematics over numerical reasoning. The last questions of the mathematics included parabolas, trigonometry and Pythagoras, they weren't hard if you know the formula.
I didn't know that you had to draw diagrams for the electricity part, so you arent alone. Science reasoning was the most difficult, I guessed a lot of questions. The last essay was the easiest, evaporate water, use a magnet ect. In general, it was quite a reasonable test.
-
I liked the science reasoning out of all, probably because it's more comprehension based ::) Some of the question were drastically weird... The essays for me are a no go, HAHA! I don't think I did too well with Science interest, but I did my best. For communication I did electricity (did anyone do the other one??) I managed to do diagrams for both essays, I hope they understand my images :P Mathematics, personally, I was urged to guess a few, knowing I was running out of time! Albeit most of the questions were ones in the year 9 curriculum. Numerical was just a 50/50. Summing up, I feel happy with the outcome of my efforts on the test :)
-
Back in my day the entrance exam was anything but easy son >:(
Jokes ;D
To be honest I found the entrance exam relatively easy in comparison to MHS exam or any other selective school exam. I did particularly well in Mathematics and Numerical Reasoning because of practice in past math competitions (AMC, ICAS). Science writing took some decent practice beforehand for proficiency, but it was well worth preparing for. I found Science Reasoning the hardest but still managed to attain a good score in comparison to everyone else. Tip: Remember your exams are marked in comparison to everyone else. If you think you did well on a certain test and everyone else performed well on that test...think again. That said, if you think you found a test difficult and everyone else found it difficult...you probably didn't fair as bad as you thought.
After receiving my results, I was happy with my performance (4 Superiors, 1 Above Average).
Good luck on the interviews ;)

Back in my day the entrance exam was anything but easy son >:(
Jokes ;D
I think they might have increased the difficulty tenfold (LOL jks) of the exams because of our year AmazingLight >.<
But yes now it's the 'dreaded' wait (it's probably more daunting than the exam itself :O) until you hear something from JMSS but I'm sure you guys did an excellent job on the exam (Y)
-
The test for me was 50/50. I found numerical the easiest, but had to guess 8 since the time ran out. Science reasoning was another one that I found easy (ended up guessing 5-8ish). Mathematics I could have done a better job, but like always, under the pressure I forgot stuff that I had learnt for the exam. Science interest was fairly easy, but did you really have to draw diagrams for the electricity topic? I thought that was for the other one :/ Science communication screwed me up the hardest (ended up writing about evaporating water with a bunsen burner and removing the iron fillings with a sieve :( ). Overall, I found the mhs exam easier (reading comp ftw!!), and I hope that at least I receive an interview....

anyone know when we find out
-
Mid August, I'm guessing :/
-
anyone know when we find out
Should be around late august. That's when we got our interviews scheduled. Bear in mind that they don't give you your results unless you specifically ask for it. I only got mine this year, after asking the receptionist at school. I still don't know why they don't just provide it without you asking, like other selective schools do.
-
oh and guys we find out September 13 according to the jmss website.
-
hey guys, i was just offered an interview today ;D

congrats Butterscotch, and good luck ;D
-
did everyone get interviews guys?
-
WOW!! Congrats guys ^_^ to be offered an interview is already a marvellous achievement. I am positive that everyone would do great :)
-
Haha got an interview today too, for the 6th. I'm not really that nervous, seeing as i just had my mhs interview yesterday ;) but congratulations all :D
-
Btw, do we need to send a confirmation?
-
Great job to everyone who got an interview. It's you that deserve a place since you've all worked so hard. There is absolutely no need to freak out if you want to be confident in passing the interview. Be proud of your efforts so far and show yourself some respect for making it to this stage. By the way, I don't see the point in studying for an interview, especially with others, because the reality is that you will be competing with them soon enough.
Most of all it is important that you express your interest, passion and belief in Science. I hope that is what has drawn you into applying for this school. If by any chance Science is not your favourite subject at the moment, please don't pretend that it is at the interview. I've tried that countless times in many interviews prior to JMSS. Luckily, I had learnt my lesson by the time I took the interview for John Monash. It is best if you try to develop an interest for Science prior to the interview. I don't believe that anyone will truly deteste a subject if they attempt to connect and establish a relationship with it. Be yourself. Have an open mind and be able to approach problems in a wide range of perspectives. Remember to be friendly with everyone at the interview, even though they may be your competition at the time, they may as well be your friends next year.
Once again, best of luck to everyone.
-
Congrats to all, and all the best to everyone :D
Thanks for the heads up AmazingLight ;)
-
I found science reasoning the most difficult because the questions were pretty complex but I was able to finish it guessing a few questions though. I found numerical reasoning really easy and got through all the questions in time. The first science paper was really easy. I was so relievied to see that 'cells' was one of the topics. I knew heaps about the topic and finished it with time to spare ;D Most people selected the topic about electricity though. The mathematics was also quite easy and I got through all the questions but there were a few difficult questions at the end which I guessed. The last science paper was generally quite easy as I already knew how to write up practicals and I have done the experiment before. Overall, the exam was quite easy and you are ensured to do well if you prepare and retain an interest for science and mathematics :D
Anyways, I got offered an interview today ;D Good Luck everyone else who got an interview! Btw my interviews on the 12th of August.

do people wear school uniform for interviews? :-[
-
Hi Guys,
I found the science reasoning test probably the easiest test because of the less time pressure and because it was purely based how you can interpret different types of diagrams
The Maths was alright some of the questions were hard but other than that it was fairly basic stuff
The Numerical Reasoning was really easy, like really easy just the same number patterns and all that stuff
The Essays i found difficult especially the one last one the separate the minerals one i drew diagrams on one page and wrote the methods on the other page.
The Electricity One i believed i did alright on but i didnt draw diagrams
Overall I got the interview mines on 12/8/13
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE

do people wear school uniform for interviews? :-[
I'd recommend it since my interview is on 2:56pm this Monday. Wearing ur uniform would represent you going to school and doing what's right (I mean, who didn't think of skipping school?) plus, if your an SRC you can wear ur badge ;)
-
Surprisingly, so many people on AN have an interview on the 12th :o
Wearing your school uniform will definitely prove to look more professional than casuals ;)
Good luck Miss_Nacii for tomorrow :)
-
Do a lot of people apply for this school? Seems like John monash has attracted a lot of applicants in a few short years since its opening...
Anyways best of luck in your interviews :D
-
Do a lot of people apply for this school? Seems like John monash has attracted a lot of applicants in a few short years since its opening...
I think there's a reasonable amount that apply for JMSS and it has risen quite a lot ever since the inaugural year back in 2010. By this stage I think it should be stagnating between 900-1000 applicants (again just speculation) for Year 10 entry.
And good luck during the week guise! :DD

Have an interview this wednesday and I was wondering if it's okay to put in primary school competition awards and my leadership certificate. >.> :0
Oh I found the examinations fun. Once we finished I was like "I wouldn't mind doing this again." Okay maybe thats just me :)
Science reasoning was sort of weird.
I wrote about an animal cell and finished 10 minutes early but like i couldn't remember all the parts so thats probably why. I couldn't remember this organelle so I called it the storage area, I later found out it was a vacuole and plant cells have them ._.
The procedure on separating a mixture was easy.
Mathematics I did alright I guess. I just kinda suck when it comes to linear equations and inequations.
Numerical reasoning was O_O intermediate :( but i got an interview so everything's cool with the exams HAHAHA
Now i just have to ace this interview and im on my way... :l thought I keep saying things aloud like "I can't do this I cant do this! I can do this, I totally can do this. "
Tell me about yourself. was that really in the interview? :O What do I do? Be myself..
okay everything was cool overall.
P.S Oh yeah I made this account for IndefatigableLover, I wanted to say thank-you for posting that guide! It helped me and others who tried out for JMSS and answered my questions! You must be a really nice person. :D
Btw why do have such a long user name? I ended up searching up what Indefatigable was and thanks I learnt a new word. :)
-
Oh I forgot to add goodluck with your interviews and outcomes! ;)
-
Good to hear everything went well for you :) And definitely keep telling yourself you can do this! Oh yea, add your leadership certificate >.^ it does say to add any leadership qualities or roles :) For the primary awards, I'm not too sure, but if they're competitions you sure can :)
PS: I learnt a new word from his name too ;) HAHA
-
I went through the interview today. I just realised that the date of your interview corresponds to the name of ur school. So today, I was with all the Box Hill and Balwyn high school students ^~^ Anyways, there were a total of 3 group activities and one puzzle (to be worked in solitude) The interview was quick, mine went less than 10 mins. They also have all the questions written down on paper and l found that useful. The questions they asked were basic and were there to get to know you, your thoughts and your passion.
-

Thank you for your kind words sushibun! And I hope that I'm a 'nice' person but AmazingLight can verify that for you ;)
The long username was basically an alias I assigned myself when I wrote a letter for someone and I decided to have it as my username (for the memories LOL).

How did you first find out about JMSS, when did u begin to develope an interest for science ect. Hopefully I didn't do too bad, I seriously went blank on one of the questions and blurted out the first thing that came to mind - which was 'he works on a boat'...
Oh wow, thanks for the update ^^

hello im new to this forum. i had my interview today and found it a great experience. The place had so many sport ribbons in a short amount of time. for the entrance test i found science reasoning extremely difficult. should I ask for the actual result for the test?

We got ribbons??? LOL.
I bet half of them were for science fairs and the other half for winning fire drills. Flannery House at least..... :-[
All jokes aside, we got some really dedicated sportsmen at our school. If you love sport, you'll still make yourself at home.
-
oh and how did u guys find the interview
-
i'm just wondering, how long does the whole interview take place for? :-\
-
we get our results aug 23
-

The interview itself lasts around 1 hour, I would say.

does everyone find out if they got in or not at the same time ?

Yeah. Even when they had the letter system (my day) those who got offers got them on the same day.

thanks (: but do you remember how long you had to wait to find out ?

thanks (: but do you remember how long you had to wait to find out ?
I got my letter around mid-day-ish on Aug 15 (today, but like several years ago haha).
I think the do emails now (and they came out last night).
edit: just realised this was a JMSS thread and not a MHS/Mac.Rob thread... oops
JMSS offers would not be out yet as many interviews have just finished, as mentioned in this thread wait till Aug 23. They'll all be out at the same time though! :)

-
hi pi do u know if everyone gets an interview?also we find out 23rd of august
Haha I'll fill you in on what I've seen during the 'interview' week. So interviews started on 5 August and ended a week later on the 12 August. From my understanding there are three sessions (Morning, afternoon & afterschool) where roughly 40 kids are in each session. On Monday there was only one session followed by three sessions from Tuesday - Thursday and then on Friday the Year 10's had immunisations so only one session was used (afterschool).
Finally two sessions on the Monday so (from observations and guesses) I'd say 520 kids got an interview which looks to be an 'alright' number by my calculations LOL :)
-
btw does 3 and half year in kumon count as tutoring , and is kumon and unfair advantage
-
btw does 3 and half year in kumon count as tutoring , and is kumon and unfair advantage
i vaguely remember at my mhs principals discretion thing - they asked why my report was bad and i told them why but then i mentioned that i was focusing on hendersons courses and trying to get into the mhs
interview total time <2 minutes, got in though, hooray, despite a so-so report and tutoring
not sure how well this relates to JMSS. though i assume it would be the same sort of deal, sorry
tl;dr kumon is probably an advantage but i wouldnt say its unfair and they wont decline you because of it
-
can someone link where it says 23rd of august
-
btw does 3 and half year in kumon count as tutoring , and is kumon and unfair advantage
LOL. Did they actually ask you about tutoring 'cause our school is pretty picky on it now though.
-
yay ! we find out if we got in or not tomorrow ! so nervous :-\
-
good luck guys we find out tommorow
-
good luck guys we find out tommorow
Remember, no matter what the outcome is, do not let it deter you from your goals in life. Focus on what you want and how you want to get it, no matter what school you're in.
-
who said it was coming out today?
-
There are things called rumors guys, that may or may not tend to be true.
-
Hey just got a question! Does anyone know if everyone above a certain threshold gets an interview? Do the top students get in straight without an interview? If so, would they have been notified?
Thanks
-
To anyone who is wondering where the results are; they probably won't reach you as soon as you had expected. I saw more students being interviewed today. They probably are recruiting more, as necessary.
-

There must have to be some sort of "threshold" in terms of skills displayed by candidates. It is a common misconception to think that the top students get in directly, without an interview.
The students who get in without an interview, are people who essentially passed the entrance exam but additionally do not exceed the 5% limit (i.e. a person who passes the test is also the only person who tried out from a certain school). That is the reason why others get interviews and some don't need to, in order to get accepted.
-
does everyone need to have an interview to get in?
-
does everyone need to have an interview to get in?
Yes, you will need one in order to get in :/
-
does everyone need to have an interview to get in?
I believe that is the case from last year onwards.
I heard there are some interviews even in september :o
Yeah there are interviews going on if I recall correctly however there was a small bunch... I believe it may be due to camp or whatever or they are people with special needs.
To anyone who is wondering where the results are; they probably won't reach you as soon as you had expected. I saw more students being interviewed today. They probably are recruiting more, as necessary.
Check latest email (third paragraph in Principal's address) and you'll get a rough day on results ;)
-
Btw, the official year 10 application guidelines said that "The applicant will receive advice of the outcome of the application by 13 September 2013"
-
anybody know the percentage that will get in this year ?
-
Good luck guyyys! :)
I'm sure all you guys will do super well! :) :P
-
anybody know the percentage that will get in this year ?
200 people get accepted. Assuming roughly there were ~1000 people who tried, I'd say 20% make it through. :)

And about 20 for year 11 entry :)
-
It was alright. Interview emails were mailed out.
Guys, tell me if you got in or got an interview, I just want to know when the results will be out.
cheers

Has anyone got the acceptance letters to the school yet? I saw buddy lists stuck on the walls, meaning they have already chosen the students.
-
I haven't gotten an email, I'm tempted to call JMSS...
-
we have a date guys called the school said September 13
-
It's funny how everyone seemingly ignored you from two months back haha
oh and guys we find out September 13 according to the jmss website.

if that's so, can you just look up friends names to see if they got in? LOOOOOL
-
It's funny how everyone seemingly ignored you from two months back haha
ahaha yes it took me around the same time with Melbourne high last year when i was in year 8 , i did the exam on june 16th , got offered a principal discretion(which is like an interview) on the 16th of august and found out in mid september that i was rejected .
-
is it possible for you to tell us all the names of people who got into the school?
it will be very very helpful :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
Emails are outtttt ! I got in ! Amen for that !
Congrats!!!! I'm happy for you :) I was also accepted. Phew, so glad that the entire process is over.

Congrats guys! Your hard-work payed off, now to smash some VCE :D
-
The hard work paid off guys! Congrats to you all, see you next year ;)
-
im gonna be starting a guide in a couple of days , similar to the one henry made . to help next year applicants . thanks to all the people who helped me . im in baby yes
-
My brother got in :) congrats to all!
-
Congratz guys!!
-
woah! so dedicated mate! Only in year 9 and you have your subjects and everything decided!
Just reminding you to try don't obsess and VCE anytime soon ok? Year 12 is aaaages away..., and cherish these moments when you hanged out with friends everyday after school only on occasion handing in homework most of the time late.... any nothing really mattered.... (Well thats how I viewed school back then) Oh! I wish I was in year 9 again D:
Everything was so easy Trust me... you'll know what I'm talking about once you start VCE. D:
On another note, Congrats on getting into JMSS, I wish you all the best!
-
oh and i might be starting a guide soon similar to the one indefatigable lover made to help future applicants with the exam.
-
what do u you have to do to get 99.95 btw
Dedication.
-
what do u you have to do to get 99.95 btw
Lol i'd think getting 99.95 is ridiculously hard that takes a lot of hard work, intelligence and luck. I don't think anyone can guarantee themselves a 99.95. They can get close (difference between 99.95 and 99.90 is probably whittled down to luck)
But then again I'm not aiming for a 99.95. (I need to be realistic D:) The ATAR you receive does not equate to your adequacy and self worth as a person, nor does it predict and measure your future successes. Once you finish, ATAR isn't really that important. So don't obsess about some number. It's not like getting a 99.95 will make you more superior than me in any way.
I know a close friend who ended up dropping school in year 10 because of the shit thats been happening in his life, now goes to TAFE studying I.T, and has really good chances into getting into Uni. He is a guy with integrity, dedication, passion, and someone I truly look up to. Mark my words, he'll make it big someday... and be all succesful and happy etc...
My aim is to get a score that reflects my hardwork and my own potentials, and hopefully that is enough to open opportunities for me in life, and grant me admission into a course I really would love to do. (Still undecided -,-)
-
Haha you're funny robert! I wouldn't even dream of touching 99.95.
Congratulations to everyone who got offered a place at John Monash Science school. ;)
I got offered a spot too so I'm HAPPY! :D After the interview at jmss i refused to to talk about it and shoved it down my memory trashcan and voila I see an email. ^^ It was a nice surprise HAHAHA so again thank you IndefatigableLover :) you're guide really helped me and everyone in the thread who answered my questions.
Overall the experience was a rocky adventure that i' d do again! :D Haha! Well done everyone :)

Hehehe. Guys, check out the above link for the truth about JMSS 8)

Lol I didn't get in because I got no email when all the others got emails specificly the ones that got in.
