Title: Encountering conflict context writing
Post by: jrl2277 on September 15, 2013, 02:54:13 pm
Hello,
Currently we are doing encountering conflict for our context writing.
We are studying 'The Rugmaker of Mazar-E-Sharif' as our text.

Do you perhaps have any external sources that i could draw from? real-life examples? history?
Mainly focusing on 'resolving conflict'

Thanks

Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement of America --> relevant to the Rugmaker, as it was during a time of oppression, ill treatment and injustice.

Mahatma Ghandi --> Same shit ^

Nelson Mandela --> Although he didn't advocate non violent protest like the above examples, Mandela was a beacon of hope for his people.

There are so many different people that you could discuss here.

As mentioned below:
-Gandhi
-Nelson Mandela
-Martin Luther King

Also:
-Mother Teresa (fighting for justice)
-Brown vs. Board case of 1954 (fight for freedom)
-Kitty Genovese (bystander effect)
-Turia Pitt (fighting for life)
-Everyday police officers/firemen/paramedics/soldiers
-Holocaust stories (people risking their lives to save others)
  -Oskar Schindler
  -Elie Wiesel
-Heath Ledger (battle with depression/drugs)
-Kurt Cobain (depression/drugs)

It doesn't have to be anyone super-famous, as long as you tie in the stories appropriately. Don't forget to try and tie in your examples with Najaf's story if you can, eg: Just like Mother Teresa in Calcutta, Najaf wanted to help in the detention centre (or something like that)

The list is virtually endless if you really think about it, hope that helped :)
