what assumpation must be made in order to use the degree of genetic diversity as a measure of evolutionary distance
-
Probably wrong here but the differences in the species nucleotides sequence for a specific gene, the more nucleotide differences the further the to species diverged from a common ancestor
-
You have to assume that there is a somewhat recent common ancestor, otherwise the nucleotide sequences will be so unrelated, that it's impossible to determine the degree of genetic difference comparative to any other nucleotide sequence.
Double check that but that's what I wrote in anyway!
