Title: Include values/domain in equations?
Post by: Apink on November 05, 2013, 05:12:52 pm
Do we need to include the values "x" (domain) can take if we're asked to find the rule or equation of something? I remember someone saying we do if they ask for the equation but I'm not too sure.

I think you're talking about inverse functions:

If you are asked to find an inverse function, you need to state this is function notation which includes the domain of the function.
If you are asked for the rule of an inverse function, just a y=.. or f-1(x)=... is sufficient.

For inverse functions you definitely should write out the full function notation. You also should when you're working with functions that have a restricted domain. For other equations, I guess you should to be on the safe side but for finding derivatives and things like its usually unnecessary.

If asked for any FUNCTION, you need a rule AND a domain.

if asked for a RULE only, then you only need... a rule.
