Title: What is UMEP/MUEP like?
Post by: lolalol on December 12, 2013, 12:12:16 am
For anyone who's completed a uni enhancement subject, what was your experience like? Not necessarily workload wise, but did you make friends? Were there lots of other Year 12s or were you mostly with uni students? Also, is it really awkward if you come in your school uniform or is it expected that you come in casual clothes?

I've applied to do a subject on campus at Melb Uni next year, by the way. Feeling a little bit nervous!

I'm not sure what the deal is with other UMEP subjects; I did UMEP Maths this year, and all the students in my class were in Year 12. All of us came in school uniform (it'd be pretty inconvenient having to bring a change of clothes every week...I had a pretty eccentric teacher, and, in hindsight, I think that her antics really helped to bring the class closer together (we spent most classes laughing, or trying very hard not to laugh). From what I've heard, however, classes are a lot more formal on campus. That said, you will definitely make a lot of new friends from all around the state, which is something you never really get from any other 'VCE' subject.

Good luck with your application! You'll definitely find UMEP rewarding.

I did UMEP Japanese last year, which I think would be somewhat similar to UMEP French. First of all, there are only THREE students did UMEP Japanese last year from the whole state, I was a little bit surprised to be honest. This course is apparently for those who has complete VCE Japanese 3&4, but the contents taught is way too easy, everything taught in Semester 1 is also taught in VCE, and Semester 2 is also very very easy. I know I shouldn't be complaining it being easy, but I have learned absolutely nothing in doing UMEP Japanese, but it's probably because I also had self taught Japanese for like 5,6 years before I took this course. The two other girls who did UMEP Japaense last year, one is born in Japan or something like that, one went on exchange to Japan for like a year or something, so they all found it ridiculously easy. Back to topic, so, yeah, in each tutorial, there were like around 15 people, and only 1 or 2 of us were doing VCE. But also, surprisingly, also I was in school uniform most of the time, no one really seemed to notice or care. That's one thing about uni, no one really cares about how other people dress, so it's not awkward at all. As in making friends, yes you absolutely can. This should be the same for every languages, you have to work on some sort of group assignment, and you do have to meet regularly and you certainly can and will make some friends.
So don't be nervous! If it is the same level as Japanese (Japanese 3 & Japanese 4 at UoM), the stuff would be easy for one who has completed VCE French. There won't be that many VCE kids, but dressing in school uniform is definitely not weird. And it's very likely you'll make some good friends. The downside is, don't expect you'll learn too much, treat it as something that relaxes you from actual VCE subjects.

Good luck!

I did UMEP physics this year and it was nkce to have more advanced maths in physics. People are going to get annoyed, but you probably find out how little you learn you learn in VCE before UMEP physics.  There was just the one class of around 15, all VCE students. We ended up being a relatively class group, but not the closest. It was helped by the food breaks every week. You can make friends at UMEP or MUEP; depends on if you're willing.

Brightsky, why were you laughing in class? Which person was responsible for that? Shame on them!

Hahahahaha
