Title: Entry into Arts (WACE/ATAR Question)
Post by: 24601 on December 29, 2013, 02:07:03 pm
Here in WA we find out our ATAR late tonight/tomorrow morning, and I'm concerned about whether I will get into to Bachelor of Arts at Melbourne.

I reckon I'll get an ATAR of ~90, but I'd be surprised if I got above 91. It says the minimum ATAR is 85.00 but the lowest clearly-in was 91.4. Does this mean if I get lower than 91.4 I have no chance? What is the likelihood that you would get into Arts with an ATAR of 88-90?

Also what's the deal with second round/mid-year offers, if I don't get a 1st round Arts offer does it mean I can't get a 2nd round offer?

Thanks

it just means that last year if you got over 91.4 you are "clearly in" and you got a spot, but some people below that atar get in, but its not guaranteed. the minimum 85 means that with an 85 flat, you COULD potentially get in, but with shitloads of special consideration. basically, if you get 88-90, youll want one or two SEAS categories, things like rural background, disadvantaged financial situations etc.

Don't confuse it with Access Melbourne; 78 is the ATAR needed for that and it's correlated with certain SEAS categories. 85 doesn't necessitate SEAS; to my understanding you may possibly be offered a place without SEAS depending on certain factors like the personal statement or subjects taken on VCE down to that level.

I believe the 85.00 mentioned is actually in the unlikely circumstance where demand for the course falls so low that applicants do not meet the 85 hurdle requirement. Only Melbourne seems to have this requirement (a MINIMUM ATAR) from all the unis I have seen.
