Hey guys,
Just curious.. Who else went to the Biology lecture today by TSFX ? :)

Hey guys,
Just curious.. Who else went to the Biology lecture today by TSFX ? :)
There is a thread asking the same question under "vce and other business" or something like that.
And I went to the lecture!
-
Yes! If only we ANers could actually recognise each other LOL

I know right!!
I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of the students who came today were ANers :P
How'd you guys find it? answered any questions? :)

Haha, I don't even think there are that many people on AN :o
Nope, no questions answered out loud. I figured there were a number of keen beans already :p

Fair enough :D
hahah! YUPP! :P I don't know if I should be shocked or motivated but like I overheard some students who were telling their friends how they finished unit 3. Like wow. but yeah the biology 3&4 cohort does seem quite enthusiastic looking at the number of hands that were raised each time a question was asked :)
-
Was the TSFX lecture helpful? Did you learn a lot?

It largely depends on how loosely you translate what they mean by 'finished'.
-

tbh I was expecting them to cover the whole course. It's something that you can do by yourself with a little of bit research. Other than that, I found it really interactive and helpful since the lecturer mentioned quite a few exam tips. But even if you couldn't make it, that's absolutely fine :) As long as you read over the book (making notes along the way) and exploring some exam tips online.. You're not missing out on anything :)
Good Luck!

Hmm.. true :)
Either way, I feel like I'm really behind haha :P
-
I remember Stick (the bio master) mentioning that he only completed Chapter 1 during the summer holidays.
Go figure huh? :D

Well,
I guess that does reinforce quality over quantity :P

Hi Bio people
Did Ian make any comments about last year's exam? Just interested in what he said!
Thanks

Hi Bio people

He did mention a couple of points, such as the pedigree question. But I believe he was inferring to the notion of 'application based questions' in bio, and how the question required a good understanding of the concepts.

I'm not too sure if he was referring to last year's exam, but he did mention that when it asks for the name of such and such molecule, you are required to write the name in full, and not just abbreviate it as this would cost you the mark.
E.g. deoxyribonucleic acid and not just DNA
-
Thanks
Did he mention poorly answered qs, or difficulty, etc?
He mentioned a 'common' mistake throughout the session- that students often abbreviated the response rather than writing the full name of a molecule, etc.

He mentioned that the question he was referring to was from the 2004 exam.

Just a quick question regarding the lectures. I just enrolled myself for the Chemistry lecture which runs on the 17th-19th, when will I get the tickets and other info by mail? I'm kinda worried that I won't get it in time because apparently on the "conditions of enrolment", admission documents etc. will be sent by regular mail from 10 days before your first lecture". 10 days before my first lecture is... 3 days ago, will I get the ticket on time? Someone who went please clear this up for me, thnx :)

Hey.. No need to panick at all :) for students who enrol just before the lecture, just take a photo ID and they'll let you in :) have you received an email from them?
-

Yeah, I just enrolled online, paid and everything. They emailed me an "enrolment confirmation" with the receipt number and everything. I was just worried about the "10 day before first lecture" thingo, hahahaha :P

haha nah don't be worried at all. after I received my tickets, they emailed just for confirmation and clearly indicated that students who don't receive their tickets prior to the lectures will need to present a photo ID :) I'm not sure if you'll also need to show them the email but I don't think so. the ID will do :)

I guess I'm a bit late to reply to this.
I was definitely there to there, and quite an interesting lecture it was. I was utterly surprised at how detailed the notes are, and amazed at the fact it seems to have everything we've gone over in school + more. It also has a few examples and a fair few questions with it. That too, we've only got one third of just Unit 3!!
Really seems to be worth the money. The lecture itself was really engaging. There were some really good questions and a lot of chances to interact and ask questions. It was also quite funny to see stuff I knew for my Year 11 Exam, but now just lightly forgotten. It also just puts the whole VCE in context when you see another 200 kids, some of which who seem to really know their content...or may have just studied earlier making them look great atm. It's quite daunting in a way you're going to be up against equally enthusiastic and some very intelligent people.
I was wondering if anyone here wants to meet beforehand, and then we can all sit together and it be less awkward. Inbox or comment if you're interested - I don't bite :P

Haha! I know right! I'm glad I enrolled! But yeah they obviously studied beforehand :P
I was sitting there blank most of the time :P Whereabouts did you sit?
-

Sure. I'll just have to get there earlier :p
-
I'm all up for it! I sat at the back last time.
-
I was in the exact middle where they had that separation between the two. That leg room was awesome!! :D
I was also that guy in the white t-shirt who attempted to answer why there's more mitochondria in muscle cells than bones due to anaerobic respiration. (It was wrong :( )
-
Haha it's funny how I showed up like 30mins earlier just for the front seats while most people sat at the back :)
-

How long after you enrol did you receive your ticket from the mail ?
-
Haha it's funny how I showed up like 30mins earlier just for the front seats while most people sat at the back :)
Haha yes, that was almost full that section. Front was empty-ish!! I was planning on sitting three rows from it (can never go right in the front), but I swear my neck kills after :P

Great thing was you tried. The more you attempt questions, the better you get at it! :D
I was the girl in the front who got rejected for almost everything haha. Most of my answers were wrong anyways :P
-

2 weeks if I'm not mistaken :)
-

Aha yea that's true :) Though, it's more embarrassing when you feel really confident about the answer. I always find that if you're half sure, and wrong, it goes down better than being confident and wrong lol :P
Oh I think I remember that haha. At least you did put your hand up :)
-
I enrolled at least a month back or so. I did not receive anything in the mail lol. Just turned up with my school ID and all was well :)
-
2 weeks if I'm not mistaken :)
Wow... 2 weeks??! My lecture starts in 7 days...
-

Relax there is plenty of time.

Hm, that's a relief. So I just bring my school id card and show them to get in? How do you know where to go?? T_T I don't even know where the lecture building is. Should I also bring the receipt number, just in case?
-

Yupp and that's when you immediately thank the guy in your head for not picking you haha :P
True. I'm probably going to bombard our second lecturer with questions -homeostasis is really not my thing :P
-
Wow... 2 weeks??! My lecture starts in 7 days...
I'm assuming that was because of the Christmas holiday delay..
But they'll let you in regardless :) Just don't forget that ID haha :P

It's the map and some important info :)

Aw man, you're seriously over stressing. Relax, calm down. Everything WILL be fine.
If you want, I'll send you copies of the general information booklet, which has map and all the buldings your lectures are in. Just turn up, with your ID and some pens/pencils/highighters/what not.. and go to the building about 20 minutes before the lecture starts. From there it's pretty straight forward :)
-
Not to derail this thread or anything, but did anyone else lose reception in that theatre? Literally, the instance I stepped out of that place, I got my 4G back :p
-

My reception was on and off.
Have you guys revised what you've learned today? I haven't yet but I'm hoping to soon.
-

Yes!!! I could not send a text, check the internet or anything. I guess they got some good anti cheating methods in there haha.
-
My reception was on and off.

I'm trying to but I'm kind of lost since we didn't really go in order - it was random pages
What do you guys think about making questions for each other? I think it'll be a good way to test our understanding..
-
For me, the reception was okay towards the front of the theater.
I thought that the lecture today was quite informative - was surprised to see a lot of people there!
-

My only negative was the lack of order. I was always asking others what page we were up to. And your idea is good.
-
Does anyone know whether we are supposed to bring Book 1 to tomorrow's lecture?
-

Hahaha, sorry. I'm calm now....I think nerdmmb gave me the info I needed on how to get there :)

Thank you! haha, I should've made an effort to look for that on the website before stressing over it.
-
I do agree that is a great idea. I always found getting someone to test you on the notes and verbally answering it is the best way to remember things - for me at least :)
Yes, he did skip a few pages. Though, I guess he did say he'd only go over the most important/heavily weighted area or those that students struggle most. Though I think he did say we're coming back to some other pages tomorrow :)
-
Does anyone know whether we are supposed to bring Book 1 to tomorrow's lecture?
Yes. I remembering seeing somewhere written that we are advised to bring all the material to every lecture :)
-
Does anyone know whether we are supposed to bring Book 1 to tomorrow's lecture?
yupp :) we''ll also be covering more things from it :)
-
Yeah, I'm just reading through the booklet now
-
The lecture was really good, so was the lecturer but your right I got confused with pages. Also where about you guys sit
-

Right in the front :) (second row)
-
Ohh Fe what you guys think of the notes thorough or not
-
Ohh Fe what you guys think of the notes thorough or not
Really thorough. I now contemplate making my own notes...or if I should just any small additions to that. That seems pretty perfect to me lol.
-
Ohh Fe what you guys think of the notes thorough or not
Pretty good! I'm using other resources too. I don't have a clue as to how i'm going to compile my notes :P
Do you guys think we'll be answering the questions in it on our own or during the lecture?
-
Haha the atar noters have to sit together tommorow
-
Indeed. I've messaged everyone on this thread (I hope). If not, I'm truly sorry and guess I just overlooked your name.
I think the general consensus is that sitting together would be fine. I think meeting up just outside the Arts West building about 20 minutes or so before the lecture would be great, or even at the top of the stairs. I'll inbox you all my number if you want to text for that added certainty if you're okay with that. :)

I'm so sorry!! :(
-
Haha we should allocate a section to star notes middle corner
-
That middle section which separates each half is the best!! The leg room is amazing :)
But I guess it all depends on what we feel like at the time, and the availability haha.
-
Let me know what you do
-
Anyway we can distinguish each other. I don't want to start a conversation with randoms..
-
Most likely I shall be wearing a maroon t-shirt and have a greyish backpack with me. I'll also be wearing a pair of black Nikes if that helps, and will be at the top of the stairs. Or if we have internet access at the time, just post on AN :P
-
Lol just meet there 20 mins early and yell out each others star notes name haha. Or yhh just post on star notes
-
I honestly have no idea what I'll be wearing but yeah a cheetah headscarf for sure :P
Lol just meet there 20 mins early and yell out each others star notes name haha. Or yhh just post on star notes

Same :D
plus the English 1&2 :)
btw you joining the meet up tomorrow ? :) It'll be great to meet other 2015ers!
-
I'm finding the TSFX booklet very fragile... how do we preserve it? Keep in mind that reproducing it in anyway is strictly forbidden.

What, you think I haven't tried that? :p
Still, I doubt it'll last till the end of term 3
-

Yup! Hopefully I'll meet you guys, though I might arrive a tad early like I did today.
You could try hole-punching the notes and place them in a binder altogether?
-
What, you think I haven't tried that? :p
Still, I doubt it'll last till the end of term 3
True True :)
Personally, I think it would have been well worth the money if they actually complied it into a book
I'm probably gonna do that at officeworks - pretty cheap and worth it considering they also add a plastic cover :)
-
I'll try that, thanks
-
Yup! Hopefully I'll meet you guys, though I might arrive a tad early like I did today.
haha dw :) I came like 40 mins earlier today :)
-
I'll try that, thanks
no worries :)
-
Hehe I'll be a few blocks down at the Medical Building for Physics! I may pop down to Old Arts West to meet my friends who are doing Bio, so if you see someone wearing a green t-shirt, blue jeans, vans, and my eye glasses with black rims (I have brown hair and fairly light skin with a sort of beard going on, haha), I'm Yacoubb :) have fun at Bio!

Haha I blame it on poor communication lol. Who knew in this day and age huh? :p
They're held at Melbourne uni, arts west

I waited outside.. didn't see anyone :(
I saw howlingwisdom though :)
Popoy111 I was coming to say hi but I think you didn't recognise me :P
Oh well.. next time :)
How did you guys find it today?

Today was alright. Although I have to say, Ian was more engaging and interesting

Despite her enthusiasm. I didn't grasp anything - fell asleep instead..
Will you be going to any other lecture?

Haha, nah only Biology. I think power point sides are more effective... dayum I should've filled in that survey

I know right. I think it's about time that TSFX stops their misleading advertisements as well.
Id say the notes are great but I expected them to cover the whole course.
-

They don't?
Edit: are you referring to the notes or the lecture itself?
-

The notes cover the course. If they tried to cover the whole course we'd be there for more days and besides they primarily covered the parts students struggled at.
-
I did the Psychology course at TSFX last year and at the beginning they give you a sheet I think where they make a disclaimer saying they can't cover everything or go through all the question. They go through what is more important. They can't go through everything.
But I have a quick question- I was away during the bio lectures so can anyone post any tips they gave because they reuse the notes for later lectures so I can still get the notes.
Thanks

Hi Jazza12396,
They only covered major topics that students often struggle with.
Some of the tips they gave were:
-Not to abbreviate your response (e.g. write deoxyribonucleic acid instead of DNA as it will cost you marks)
-To read the question carefully and if the question asked you what a certain molecule or substance (in living organisms) was composed of, write protein if in doubt
The notes pretty much sum up the content in the textbook. If you read over your book and highlight the important points then you wont be missing out on anything.
-
OOOOH I was at that course! haha only just saw this thread :P
