Title: Government House Invite
Post by: Emie on January 16, 2014, 09:59:50 pm
Did anyone else get an invite to Government House for Australia Day celebrations? Is this linked with the Australian Student Prize? :)

yeah i got one too! i've asked around and apparently it is not linked with the australian student prize... people from last year said that comes out about when uni starts! this celebration is pretty much just to meet other high achievers and eat good food... nothing amazing but not bad either! congratulations for getting it!

Hey guys,
Was this in a form of a letter? Or email?
Anyone knows the criteria for being invited?
Thanks! +1

Don't you need five 46s or higher for the Aus student prize?

That's the Premier's All Rounder award. The Aus Student Prize is based on the Aus Student Prize score (top 4 raw scores + 10% bottom 2 raw scores).

I received an invitation through the mail just today! so I'm sure people will get theres in a couple of days
I'm not too sure about criteria, but most likely its for high ATAR students

I've heard from my mum, who is still in Melbourne, that I received an invite in the mail. However, I'm overseas at the moment so I'm not going to be able to attend anyway. Oh well.

Hey lzxnl,
I look similar to you :P Do you reckon I could try to pass off as you and take your spot at the government house? Plox? :D Sounds cool as, going to the government's house and stuff.

I don't understand why there are prizes for five 46+ raw scores, or for the sum of raw scores. Wouldn't it be more fair to make all Australian academic prizes based purely off ATAR scores or scaled subject scores?

I mean, if someone gets a 50 in spec, 50 in methods, 50 in literature, 50 in chemistry and 45 in Latin, surely they deserve the prize more than someone who gets a 46 in English, biology, psychology, further maths and history revolutions.

Yeh, I'm kinda curious too :P

For everyone on this this thread that's invited (I'm not lol, no surprise there :))) they all have a few things in common:

1. At least one raw 50 (but there's soo many 50s eg just look at Further or English so I don't think it can be that)
2. All got above 99 ATAR (but again there'd be soo many 99+ ATARs I don't think it can be that either)
3. All did some sort of UMEP subjects getting 4.5+ (but yet quite a few in this catagory and had UMEP ceremony already)

This leads me to the conclusion.. It's for bery bery bery smart cookies :D

But my scores werent that amazing they were high, but not the best of the best, so I'm not sure how the invitations worked

My guess is probs people who will get a Premiers.

Hey guys!

I got this invite and was able to get onto them to ask what the reason was, turns out it's for being in the top 100 VCE Students in 2013 (Could be based on ATAR, aggregate or subject scores, but Alwin I didn't do uni extension and I got invited :P). It seems they invite different categories of people each year and this year they chose to invite us.

My guess is probs people who will get a Premiers.

We have been invited to the governor's australia day reception by the governor, I would assume premiers awards are from the premier :P

Anyway, if you did get this letter, congratulations and hopefully I'll see you all there :)

edit: merged my double post

There were some people got invited to the government house but didn't get premier's award nor the australian student prize. So I'm 100% sure it has nothing to do with the premiers award or the ASP
Title: Re: Government House Invite
Post by: PB on January 17, 2014, 11:08:04 am
Wheeuff ^ I thought I missed out on a premier's award there already! :O
lol Thushan, I was just reading pretty much an identical thread from you 2011 boyz, discussing the reasons behind the invitations and you guys didn't manage to figure it out either XD
Title: Re: Government House Invite
Post by: thushan on January 17, 2014, 11:08:44 am
Hmm.

The people who didn't get premiers' -> did they get the All Round awards?

Also, yeah Premiers' Awards are given by premier; my theory was that they are decided much earlier and those students invited to Government House in addition.

Nah Thushan, I know for certain that yellow (this dude from melbourne high) didn't get any premier's awards but still got invited to the gov house.  But he did get 99.95 though... so maayyybe all 99.95s are included?
Title: Re: Government House Invite
Post by: ~T on January 17, 2014, 11:24:17 am
^If he got 99.95 though, I'm pretty confident he would have gotten the All Round Excellence award.

Edit: FWIW, I haven't gotten an invite, unless the mail took a while to get here (regional), in which case I'm checking the PO box today.
Title: Re: Government House Invite
Post by: PB on January 17, 2014, 11:41:23 am
Not necessarily ~T :P Because you still have to get above 46 in like 5 of your subjects or something to get that award. There are many 99.95s who haven't achieved that :P

I have two friends who got 99.95 and would not qualify for the All Round Excellence award. I also know people who didn't get 99.95 but got All Rounders.

Yeah, I've known plenty of the latter but I guess I didn't really think too hard about the mathematics of the former. Four ~50s in your primary scores with Spec or LOTE and you're pretty much set, regardless of your 10% scores. Point taken.

I got one too! At first I thought it was just random selection but my friend who got 99.90 also got one so we figured it was ATAR related?
It'll be great to meet everyone  :)

Er... I got an invite and do not fulfil any of the aforesaid. But maybe I am just a sympathy invite - whoo, free and undeserved food!

Oh, and what would be a 'day dress' appropriate for the event?

Very confusing! I didn't get one and I had 50,50,49,47,44,44. Mind you, one of those 50's was from last year. All my subjects were science or LOTE.

My friend got one with 50,49,47,40, and two <40's. Pretty much all in humanities subjects.

On a side note, who invites you to an event without telling you what the event actually is? So presumptuous lol.

Ah, so lounge suit would be just a suit... Minus the shorts I am hoping adding actual pants.

Uh, can I wear a trench coat to the event if it is cooler? And I mean wearing it at the table.

I didn't get one either, but I'm not surprised since I have essentially the lowest aggregate for 99.90.

Anyone else find it weird that even though it is for Australia Day, the date on the invitation said the 22nd of January? So this Wednesday. I hope that this isn't a typo because I don't really want to turn up to an empty place and confused receptionist.

If I remember correctly, it was held on the Wednesday before Australia Day last year, too. I guess it's because Government House is open to the public on Australia Day, so they can't hold it then.

If it's like last year, there'll also be people from the army, police, and the like. I'd say there were maybe a few hundred people or so.

Well, I didn't particularly enjoy that experience. Canapes tasty, awkwardness factor though (for me anyway) high. On another note, the ceiling of the place is lovely.

Hey guys I think I may have solved the thing why some people didn't get an invite despite ATAR's of 99.90+, the governor guy mentioned community involvement through activities like army/scouts and stuff. for example I got 99.80 but also got my scout medallion when I was younger and still in scouts, so that might have been why I was invited over someone who hadn't done scouts or something similar but got a higher ATAR. Just a guess though, idk for sure.

Anyway it was a pretty cool evening I thought, government house is epic and we got to do a bit of exploring and seeing all the fancy ornate rooms and stuff, had heaps of fun. Yeah it was awkward standing around at first because the only person I knew was my guest but it was good fun once they did open the doors and let us walk around.

One thing, far out, they had sparkling water. All I wanted was normal water. What's worse, by the end of the governor's address at the start, my sparkling water was flat.

flat water.

Well I didn't go, but I didn't participate in any real co-curricular activities aside from the school band, debating team and chess team and was invited.
In contrast, one of my friends was a music prefect and was also involved in one of the school's committees while getting the same ATAR as me...no invite apparently. I doubt co-curriculars is how it worked.

The rooms were nice... Except I wonder where the other end of the butler pantry button goes.

And no, not in any extracurricular activities. I recall hearing the governor talk about 'diversity' in the speech so I figured I just got invited to add 'diversity' in the crowd.

And yes, I didn't like the sparkling water either.

in my opinion, i think we were chosen at random... i think the people (governor/premier/whoever) got a list of all the high achievers in the state, then randomly selected students from there... not sure though.
