So here it goes:
Hi,
Just a couple of questions regarding the University of Melbourne Bachelor of Science.
- What are breadth subjects
- What do they involve?
- Do they have exams?

[ideally, I WILL choose a Life Sciences major] - Also, which major best prepares you for the GAMSAT?
- Is there any ATAR requirement for any of the majors within BSc?
- How many majors do I pick?
- Do I change them in second year/third year etc?
- When do I actually pick my major?

What are breadth subjects?
Breadth subjects are the subjects that are not offered by your faculty. eg. if you study Bachelor of Science, you can take subjects from the faculty of commerce, arts etc. as breadth.
What do they involve?
They are just normal subjects. What they involve depends on the subject. But normally they involve a number of lectures and one tutorial each week.
Do they have exams?
They might or might not have exams, depending on the subject.

All the science majors are not directly related to postgraduate Medicine, but a Life Science major would definitely prepare you more for Medicine.
Also, which major best prepares you for the GAMSAT?
Any Life Science major would be good IMHO.
Is there any ATAR requirement for any of the majors within BSc?
There is no ATAR requirement for individual majors, but you do have to fulfill the VCE prerequisites for BSc itself.
How many majors do I pick?
You can study as many majors as you want, if the course plan fits. (But I can't see how anyone can fit more than 3 majors) But you have to declare one as your 'real' major as the university will only put one on you formal transcript.
Do I change them in second year/third year etc?
As you are doing more than one streams in first year to keep your options open, you can change them in second/third year.
When do I actually pick my major?
Second or third year.
Will my Bachelor of Science course be determined by the major I pick?
ie, the course plan?
Yes, you study the subjects of your major, the prerequisites of the major subjects (1st or 2nd year subjects) and anything you are interested in.
or are there core subjects that all BSc students will undertake?
There is no formal core subjects, but there is not many first year subjects for each area of study, all sudent will study similar first year subject.
Is there a set number of undergraduate BSc students that will be accepted into post graduate Medicine?
Someone else will know better than me.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not even a UoM student after all, but I do know quite a bit as I was going to UoM..

Not for the MD at Melbourne. They literally ignore what undergraduate degree you have as long as you do 2nd year Anatomy, Biochem and Physiology

I wish. They won't even let me take quantitative methods for breadth as a Bachelor of Science student. So yes, they're subjects that aren't offered by your faculty, but not if they have the slightest relevance to your discipline.
I know. You can't do Biomedicine subjects either.
