Hello all. I'm new to the forum and this is my first post, so forgive me for any of the noob/lame comments i make.
I will be commencing the BSc this year and like most students i attended the AAD today. What i aim to get out of it is an engineering systems major, in this case civil systems
At the session for engineering, i learned that for civil systems along with the math prereqs and eds 1/2, i could choose between chem 1/2 or phys 1/2 as complementary subjects. Being someone who did chem at VCE and did reasonably well and only did physics up to year 10, this was a huge relief. (I really don't know why i didn't choose physics for vce so dont ask lol)
But somehow, it being civil eng i still feel that physics is vitally important. My query basically is, do you guys recommend me to choose physics fundamentals and then physics 2 or stick with the two chem subjects for a better mark i guess, or do you think that it doesn't really matter? And most importantly how hard will it be to pick phyics 2 coming from fundamentals?
Thanks in advance for your replies :D

For the love of god, please do physics! It's super important to civil engineering compared to chemistry and will give you a good base for 2nd year Engineering Mechanics and onwards.

por que no los dos?
sem1:
calc2
physics fun!damentals
chemistry
breadth
sem2:
physics2
linalg
esd2
chem2 or breadth

Yeah, that's what i was thinking at the eng sesh today even when the guy presenting said you could choose between the two. But my query really is how hard will phys fundamentals -> physics 2 be to me, where my exposure to high school physics is self taught to minimal. And also only having done Methods( scored reasonably well), will that have some effect?

That seems like the way i could possibly go. Except replace calc 2 with calc 1 and postpone Linear Algebra. Thank you for the suggestion

How important is knowledge gained in physics for mechanical, civil and electronic?
I'm currently looking to go towards a chemical systems major but I want to keep my options as open as possible so hence I've been considering doing physics alongside my ESD, calc and chem just in case I change my mind.

Physics 1 and 2 are pre-reqs for second-year subjects that lead to the Mechanical/Electrical Systems majors. You simply won't be able to study those majors without Physics at first year.
So if you think you may have a slight interest in Mechanical/Electrical, take first year Physics just in case, unless you have some other subject that you really want to do.

first year physics was the worst subject i have ever done at uni....

Do we need Chem 1+2 for eng Chem or esd 1 is sufficient ?

You definitely need Chem 1/2 and you need to do 2nd year chem subjects as well for Chem Eng.

Oh quick reply ! I'm doing the enrolment now and it seems like i can't fit Chem subj anymore with sem 1 : calc 2, esd 1, physics, japanese

Basically, you have two options. Don't take breadth till 2nd year, or swap out physics for chemistry which will lock you into Chemical Engineering and you won't be able to take any other engineering streams.

I will stick with physics then. So I have a chance of going with elec, mechn/mechatronic or civil? Also I can't find anything to replace esd 1 and the contact hr is quite scary though.

You can do Chem 1 in Semester 2 and take Chem 2 in the Summer? :)

Contact hours get better. Generally though, 6 hours per week for engineering classes is pretty standard. Better get used to it!

I will be so stressed with so many science subjects so I will try out first sem physics first to see if it is any good.

Do u mean engineering students will spend more hours in uni than other science student :'( :'( I LOVE COMMERRCE NOW ;D
