Title: Is is difficult to get an ATAR of 85 and above?
Post by: currypuff on January 31, 2014, 05:04:07 pm
I'm a Year 12 student this year and the subjects I'm doing are:

English
Further Maths
Biology
Psychology
Accounting

I dropped Business (although I got straight A+ throughout year 11) and picked up accounting this year. I've never done units 1/2 Accounting before and I dropped business because it was dead boring and dry.

I'm aiming to get an ATAR of 85 and above. I think it's quite difficult with the subjects I have as they all scale down except for Biology and Accounting (they only get scaled up by 1)

How can I get my desired ATAR with these subjects?

Also, do you know anyone who did similar subjects and got a high ATAR?

That's a fairly common set of subjects, I think.

Difficulty is an entirely subjective thing. For some people it is, for others it isn't. Just depends on your strengths and weaknesses as an individual. If you're an academically strong and hard working student (if you consider yourself one that's enough) 85 is a realistic aspiration, and you should in fact be able to do much, much better.

The subjects that you choose tend to have little bearing on your ATAR, if you're willing to work hard. If you enjoy the subjects in particular that a long with commitment drastically outweighs the effect of scaling, which is really negligible in the long run. Looking at the school that you go to I'd say 85 is probably well

Eh, not too difficult. I managed it with minimal work throughout the year (I was always one of the lazy ones). Aim for a SS of above 35 in every subject, you should be fine.

Yeah but your experiences don't necessarily translate to others. I think for the average student >85 is quite impressive.

OMG! I swear I didn't mean it like that! I just meant it isn't as hard as you'd think, and I probably don't deserve that score anyway because I'm very lazy :P 85 is an awesome score :)
