Title: TV Show Discussion Thread.
Post by: 90+FTW on February 03, 2014, 10:16:34 pm
I'm bored, what's a REALLY good show/series to watch? Can you recommend any?
EDIT: I've already seen Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad etc.
If you mention a show, can you sort of explain what it's about. Thriller, Drama?

I am watching Smallville (I know this TV show is old, but...), do you know any TV show that is similar to Smallville?
I ADORE SMALLVILLE. One of my favourite shows ever. If you don't watch Arrow already, that's a perfect complement (such economics wow). Supernatural is a bit similar, Buffy for sure, and all the other Superman shows are fab (Lois and Clark, etc).

You should really check out 'Fringe'. The best science related tv series ever imo!

L O S T Lost is the best television series ever created, objectively speaking. All other television series need not apply. Other favourites - Twin Peaks (myster/supernatural), The Wire (crime), The Sopranos (drama), Nichijou (anime counts, right?), The West Wing (unrealistic but endlessly entertaining political drama) and Breaking Bad. Although, if you're looking for something to get into right now: True Detective. It's gonna be huge in about a year from now, only three episodes have gone to air so far, ep 4 comes out next Monday. Plus it's on HBO and it stars Woody Harrelson, so you know it's good.

Two detectives investigating a ritualistic murder in the American south. Most of the story is told via flashbacks, as it's set in 2012 but the investigation happens in 1995.

This is what i'm currently watching:
1. White Collar: Hands down my favorite show 2. Suits: Cannot wait until the new season 3. Boston Legal: Went old school and going back to the first season 4. Keeping up with the Kardashian's: Yes, don't judge me 5. Arrow: Season 1 was very good. However, season 2 has disappointed me so far 6. Person of Interest: Trying to get into this but only watch this if there's nothing else to watch. Its okay
What I've recently finished:
1. Breaking Bad: Awesome, however they kind of dragged it too long 2. Dexter: Second best, after White Collar 3. Fairly Legal: I don't know why they closed it off. I liked it :(

Everyone is recommending the shows everyone else know :P, here's some slightly more off-beat stuff.
Check out "Elementary". It's another take on Sherlock Homes (people have been doing it for decades afterall). It's a bit novel in that Watson is played by a woman (Lucy Liu). It's definitely one of those shows that get better with time though, the first season kind of feels like an ordinary police show (like law & order) with characters named Holmes and Watson. It definitely focuses more on the mystery and case at hand rather than the personal drama or fandom. I've read most of the Holmes canon and this show is honestly closer to what Holmes is really like in the books (imo). This Holmes is a lot more dark and tortured in a way than the one in Sherlock (TV).
I'd also recommend the Dresden Files. Think a hard-boiled detective, the kind you'd see in the 60's, dimly lit office, coffee and smokes everywhere, dodgy part of town. Now, add him being a wizard (definitely nothing like Harry Potter though). Magic is just part of the world, it's not some fatanstical thing "oh look how awesome and weird" this is like Harry Potter et al, i think the genre might be called magical realism. He takes cases from the NYPD that cant be solved or has weird elements.
The IT crowd is hilarious but British comedy, in particular something fairly geeky like this isn't for everyone but i think it's hilarious none the less. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is like a more adult/crazy version of Seinfeld. It's kind of about nothing in the way Seinfeld is but the kind of stuff that happens to them is way more crazy.
