Title: Optional Assessments

I noticed quite a number of law units have optional essays/assignments as assessments, which reduce the weight of the exam. If I do better in the exam than this assessment, will it still be factored in?

Unfortunately no - if you do the assignment your exam weighting will be reduced regardless of how well you did in the exam or how badly you did in the assignment.

That said, I recommend doing the assignments for subjects like Contract Law and Torts where the optional assignment closely resembles what the final exam question will look like. When you are just starting your degree, doing those assignments really helps prepare you for the end of year exam.

Also should note there will probably be fewer optional assignments and more compulsory assessments in the future as the Faculty is moving away from 100% weighted law exams.

Optional assignments are marked quite harshly, they are only worth while if they shorten you exam.
