Title: Top English 1on1 tutors?
Post by: Orb on March 05, 2014, 09:52:37 pm
Hey guys,

Recently my English grades has been dropping significantly. While my other subjects are at the standard that I want them to be, the same can't be said for English and i'm getting incredibly frustrated (went from Straight A+ yr 7-9 to mainly A+ year 10 to Bs Year 11)

Is there a reasonably good tuition company/tutor with a long period of experience and great results that you guys could recommend to me?

Price isn't a problem and I've already tried Royanz (full).

Thanks!!

hey hamo94,

in my opinion, english can't be really 'tutored' to a great extent. unless you have great great trouble understanding structures and themes, i don't really think an english tutor as beneficial. i think the best way to improve in english is by reading model essays, if you can get your hands on them. also, reading analytical criticisms about texts is very beneficial. even so, if you still feel compelled to find a tutor, i do not recommend 1 on 1 tutoring. english tuition is best taught in a class (it can be small, maybe 4-5 students?). english is about the discussion and development of ideas and i have found from experience that 1 on 1 tutoring is not that good for english (unlike subjects like methods, specialist etc.)

hope this helps, drake

I would disagree. I think english tuition can be immensely beneficial. Any atmosphere promoting interesting and open discussion is valuable for English. Like drake mentioned, group classes would be more beneficial from a discussion perspective, but i guess you wouldnt be getting the one on one feedback you may be after.

In any case, hope you found a good tutor!
