Hey everyone,
I'm going for the Nossal Year 10 Exam, and was just wondering if any of you guys who took part in it could answer a few of my questions. Such as :
- What were some of the topics for Maths ? eg Algebra, Ratios etc
- What study books did you read/complete that were helpful for you ?
- What sort of questions are in the Numerical and Verbal Reasoning tests; how can I practise for these two ?
- Tips on studying/remembering formulas
- Do you think I should go to school on the morning of the exam ? (If I miss out, I might be behind on lessons but I still need to prepare > < The exam starts at 1pm)
- How could I improve my persuasive and narrative writing pieces ? - Do they give you 4 random images and instruct you to write a story, or ..
Thank you guys ! ^ ^ If you have any tips, feel free to comment them down as they will be benefiting for me !

Hello Deerlinas,
I'm guessing you did participated in the selective exam last year, and so my best advice is to go on to the DEECD website and practice the mock exam, as you may or may not realized that the questions they are going to ask you are going to be very similar.
I also suggest you to go through your year 9 maths book and in terms of going to school or not for that day, I suggest you stay at home for the day. Just to have a fresh and healthy mind.
In term's of the two essays, try to think of your own by reading the news in regards with the society.
Good Luck with everything though :)
-
thank you ! ^ ^ Are the mock exams specialised for the year 9 entrance exams only, or are they suitable for year 10 as well ? Also yes I did apply last year but didn't get in ;_: Thank you again ~
-
Honestly I didn't study for the year 9 one, I regret it though. However I hope I do get in this year, I studied, and of course will continue to study until the examination date and hopefully it all pays off :) Congratulations for getting in at Year 9, hopefully we can be acquaintances if I ever get in ^^

Hey,
I am trying for Nossal year 10 as well!! Haha, I have a few friends attending there and it is soo cool! I attend brentwood so it was difficult for me to pass the 5% rule, and I didn't prepare as well as I should have! :(
I really want to get in though. I'm just going through the year 9 maths book. Are you doing JMSS as well? I am trying harder for JMSS, so hopefully the mathematics preparation should be similar!
-
Hey, I sat the MHS Year 10 entrance exam last year, and was offered a late offer! Let me help as the MHS and Nossal exam are practically same!
Maths: Last year, i found the maths harder than year 9 entrance! On top of having the year 9 curriculum under my belt, I also studied the year 10 course before the exam!
Numerical: I found easier than the year 9 exam. Basically patterns and logic
Reading: A lot of paragraphs and information. Always read the question first, then skim back to the writing to find the answer
Verbal: Didn't even study for this. Just did a lot of practice questions. Found this way harder than the year 9 exam
Two writing pieces: For creative, we were given, if I recall correctly, a quote and 2 pictures (not sure) and for analytical, something on drink driving. You can't really study for these, but instead try to complete a lot of practice essays and have them marked from your teacher. Feedback is critical for writing.
My results:
Maths: Superior
Reading: Superior
Creative: Superior
Numerical: Superior
Analytical: Above Average
Verbal: High Average
If you end up beating some of the competition, and receive and interview (Nossal, MHS and/or JMSS) feel free to PM me, as I'm willing to help!! :D
(PS. The exam is NOT and I repeat is NOT the main detriment for offers into MHS and I'm assuming it is the same for Nossal at year 10 and greater years. Try to have a lot of co-curricular achievements [ie. state level sport, leadership achievements etc.])
GOOD LUCK!
-
Hey I got into Nossal in Yr10 and honestly the only way you can study is by doing practise and improving your speed.
And yes, I reckon stay home that day and get a good night's sleep.
I initially tried out for JMSS and got an interview but didn't pass that and Nossal exams were held a while after, in term 3, so I just tried out for that slight chance. I did a lot of work to study for JMSS, including tuitions, and did only one night's worth for Nossal because I really wasn't expecting anything. So I'm pretty sure I just retained the skills learnt from studying for JMSS.
I think you would benefit from having someone correct your writing pieces (I did analytical writing at Hendersons) because they do need structure and coherency like a normal essay you do in school, just less in depth as a result of the time constraints.

You provided so much helpful information, thank you so much ! I borrowed a few study books from the library and I do like a few units a day. When did your late offer arrive ? Did they send it via email or did they post it to your address ? Also, what were the main topics for Mathematics. Maths isn't my strong point however I'm willing to try my hardest to pass the exam. Thank you so much again xx

I've heard about Hendersons a lot but unfortunately money is tight right now for my family so all I can do is self study my hardest and ask my tudor teacher to correct it for me ^^ Could you tell me the main topics for Mathematics and what was on the creative writing test ? Thank you so much by the way ! <3

Fair enough, just put in the effort and you'll be fine :)
I'm sorry I don't remember anything about maths :/ For creative writing I think it was a picture of a torch, and I just made up some stupid story which I didn't finish, but I tried to make it descriptive.

My late offer arrived like a month after I found out that I was rejected. So October (can't remember). They initially sent me a letter, saying that I was rejected, but then they called my parents for the late offer. For JMSS, I fount out via email in September.
Maths was basically everything in the textbook; Quadratics, Linear, Algebra, Ratios, Geometry etc. Try your hardest!!!

That's really good :). Is 2 Superior's enough to get in, do you think? (Remainder High Average)

I think it should be enough to get an interview!

I know people who got in with no Superiors.

Wow really? Probably everything high average? Or does it depend on the school? Isn't the cut of mark for the exam the same and the 3% rule applies for interviews? Haha i dunno! ::)
-
8 more days :-\
How are you feeling? Do you think your prepared?
I think I will be fine for numerical and maths, but reading, verbal and essays :'(
Analytical might be alright, depending on the topic. For the creative, does it have to be a story with a plot or can I just do a load of decription and still impress examiners? Reading comprehension, hopefully the passages are not too long. Verbal, hmmm, really gonna struggle with the complicated words :(
I am feeling alright. Definitely do not think I will get the best score, but hopefully better than last year.
How about you or others doing Nossal HS year 10?
Im also doing JMSS, that is my initial choice though.
-

3% rule means I think atleast one will be confirmed accepted.

Nah you gotta have passed the cut-off mark. If the people from '' unknown derp school '' all get low averages, obviously they're not going to take anyone.
School's aim for a wide spread of students but they're not going to take people who are obviously incapable of coping. It's unfair to both the school and the student.

nervous honestly ! I'm complete opposite of you haha, I think I'll do alright with reading comprehension and creative, but the rest I'm uneasy ;_; Good luck ! Hope to see you there in the gymnasium :) !

Good Luck everyone doing the Nossal year 10 and year 11 exam tomorrow! Do your best! Maybe we can discuss some stuff after the exam! ;) :) :D
-

i think as long as you get high average or more (i got straight in with one superior), you will definitely get in. Good luck!
-
Smash it everyone! I believe in you all, hopefully all the hard work pays off :D.
-
Don't worry if you don't think you did well. At the end of the day, you tried your hardest. Good luck everyone ^^

Best of Luck everyone :DD hahaha just have a good night sleep and have a fresh start tomorrow (Y)

thanks man :D

How was the exam?
-
How was the exam?
Yeah, tell us about it haha :)
-
Omg it was so hard for me, especially the reading comprehension. I pretty much guessed the whole second column A, did anyone else do this as well I'm so scared if like none of the answers were A...
-
I think I did well with Reading Comprehension, but the writing ones and maths were hard for me >< I basically legit guessed C for the last column for Mathematics.
-
for the reading I only read like a few of the stories, the long ones I just guessed A and most of them I didn't understand :'( :'( For the verbal I guessed most and the writing omg I only had 2 reasons for the persuasive :/ The maths and numerical reasoning were the easiest for me but I still guessed like 10
-
Don't doubt yourself if you think you didn't perform as well as you wanted! I'm sure there are plenty of people who had a similar experience :).
-
Well, I messed up the creative writing real bad. I didn't know what converse meant and I heard tonnes of people asking the examiners what it meant but they said that they were not allowed to tell. I should have knew converse came from "conversation", but meh, I guess it was the nerves. I though it meant "interact". I ended up writing about this guy that was running from the cops and walls and objects were able to move and interact (not talk) with him. Probs gonna get like below average for that! :'( :-[
The numerical, maths and verbal were quite easy, i found. Still guessed about 5 for each and maybe 10 for maths. Analytical writing was good I guess. I managed to finish with intro, 2 body, rebuttal and conclusion.
Reading comprehension, i guessed about 20. :-[ :-[
How many did you guys guess and how did you go?
-
Aw its okay. For the creative i didn't even write a conversation except like a 3 line conversation wtf I just found out what converse means right now :( :( :( For the reading comprehension I guessed so much, haha which letter did you guess? for the maths and numerical I guessed around 5. for the verbal like 10.... LOL :( It was so hard..
-
Lol this is unfair, howcome the times were all the way down on that whiteboard, and I am sitting there like, how am I supposed to see it, but anyway guys and girls, we all did similarly and at the end of the day, we all did our best
-
How did you go Asteriskk?
-
How many year 11s do you guys think there were?
-
I mean year 10s trying out for year 11 lol
-

i did not even do a conversation

@SKGUN11 (don't even know how to use atarnotes)
Well what was your storyline then? Usually whenever I write short stories I avoid dialogue so I wrote really less dialogue which was "Please, take me." "Please" :/ I think it'll be fine if you had a good storyline then! You know for reading comprehension in the second column did you get a lot of As? I barely read any of the texts and questions I just guessed argghh regrets.
-
OMG i just found out what converse means too!
I thought it meant by manipulating objectssss
KMS right now
-
KMS AS WELL... especially for reading comprehension. ASTERISKKK DID U DO ANY As IN THE SECOND COLUMN?? :( or do you remember any of the stories?? I can't seem to remember any but I'm trying to omg fml :(
-

Hahaha! My storyline was about this guy who was running away from the cops because he had to meet his wife with his new baby in the hospital. Since I thought converse meant "interact", wrote about how the walls and objects came to life and helped him get to the hospital avoiding the cops. I ended up kind of writing about transformer machines as well! :( It is so bad :( Such a basic and irrelevent story :(
What did you guys write about?
Reaching comprehension was that I guessed C a lot. I did all the grammar questions and the short passages. Didnt get to read any long passages except for the river passage. I guessed like 20! :(
Hopefully we get an interview! Good luck man!
-
If you folks did the test again, would you try and get through it a little faster? I'm unsure whether to take a little bit of time for each question and leave a few, or to go as fast as I can in an attempt to finish them all. Thanks :)
-

Honestly, the way I did it was good for me. It is just that I am not fast enough at reading. Go through grammar first, then short passages and if time, the rest!
OMG i just found out what converse means too!

KMS right now
ikr? fml! hopefully most people fked that up. :( I wish they would just write "Imagine if you could talk to inanimate objects. arghh >:(
-
Omg SKGUN I guessed like 30 or 40, I didn't read any long ones as well I didn't even skim through them i had no time but I looked for the grammar questions and I did them first because they're easier. I wrote about:
I wrote that I was walking past a shop then a doll inside the shop was calling for me. "Please take me." "Please" And then like it looked really evil but then it reminded me of my dead mother and it had my mother's smile so then I bought it. then that night I put it next to me then I was thinking about my dead mother again how our old house went on fire and I was just watching and I didn't save her and then I felt uneasy that night and couldn't sleep. So then I looked next to me and the doll was gone and then I saw flames and then I died and i ended it with. "Now i'm with mother. I'm up there with her"
Something like this, :( kinda forgot..
What were your reasons for persuasive? I only had 2 reasons omg :( I'm so sad, I think I could've done better. And @Hannibal, I would go faster haha I spent long on the maths questions; some of them wasted my time argh
-
Well i wrote how this guy had a power to change objects
turn water into some display (waterbending????) and fold a paper into an eccentric shape, and how he flowed with the objects... it sounds really cheesy but i used alot of creative techniques
-

Wow thats actually pretty good! My persuasive arguments were
-It is cruel.
-Wrecks main purpose of zoos/sanctuaries.
-Humans are using power wrong.
-Not all animals of the specie can perform that way.
-Does not teach correctly.
-Unfair to put animals through this while they are already kept captive by caging.
I did intro, 2 body, rebuttal and conclusion. Managed to finish the essay actually haha. Wrote until the final 3 lines from bottom of the final page. I did heaps of rhetorical questions. I am kinda proud with that but not sure if it is readable haha. Rushed handwriting.
-
I swear omg SKGUN we're like twins?!?!? For the persuasive I had 3 more lines until 2 pages as well omg hahaha this is density nah jokes but like it's such a coincidence! haha omg I was going to do a rebuttal but it said to only choose one side so i wasnt sure so didn't do it just in case

Mines goes by
-Can cause an animal to just snap, or become mentally unstable
-Cannot change instinctive traits of an animal therefore dangerous to trainer and animal
-Fatalities caused by use of animals with entertainment intentions
-Unintentional fatality can lead to misjudged euthanasia on animal

I only got 1 question correct for the Elliot story :( I checked my answer on the practice test last year on deecd because it was the same story argh damn it I MADE SO MANY MISTAKES I CANT BELIEVE I SPELT MISCHIEVOUS WRONG AS WELL :( :( :(

well holy shit everyone made similiar mistakes

yeah haha. My dad asked the principal after and they said 2 people get accepted. Towards the end of the year 4-5 places open up because people leave for various reasons, mainly jmss. Thats crazy though. Did you guys know about that?
-
Im more dumbfounded on creative, why would you even put converse on there instead of 'talk to'
-

agreed but since everyone did bad and the same i think there is a chance

Haha but wouldn't Nossal be exactly the same as SCHS considering they're both selective schools without any emphasis on other areas of study like JMSS (except for location-wise) because I have a few friends who go to SCHS and they really like it over there!

They're not really exactly the same haha, in terms of VCE

Hey everyone, I did the the test to get into year 10 two years ago and I got in. I'm pretty sure there were 11 people who got in (out of a 100ish people who tried out). And one crucial thing that the principal told us was that there were three kinds of people who got through.
Either they did really well in the maths tests (like a superior or high average), or they did really well in the English tests (superior, high average) OR they did pretty good across the board (which is like a mix of above averages and high averages)
So yeah, if you think you may have done well in maths, but did badly on something like the comprehension, there's really no need to worry.
Hope that made sense :)

OMG I did so bad on the Maths... hope I get in now that you said that :)
-
I found mathematics not too bad, I was able to finish 2-5 minutes before the test ended. However, I have a feeling I did not do well in the english tests/essays. How did you guys find the maths and english tests? I have never heard of the THREE TYPES OF PEOPLE thingy, but right now, im relying on my mathematics to get me in AHAH , good luck guys! :D :-[

Dont worry people, ur results are based on the average of others, so if everyone here happened to Make the same mistakes then you can do really well and get a Superior even if you do ok
-
Hey, i took the exam last year and got into melbourne high. All of the test are pretty easy expect numerical reasoning, personally think you should buy jim courteous books. A lot of questions and helps a lot. If you have any trouble with the rest of the test, you can pm me

Anyone heard back? Results? ??? :-\

If you didn't get in with those scores then the standards are pretty high for that cohort of testers then

Hey Guys, I got to Nossal and we just had an assembly the other day about the vacancies available. He said that about 120+ students (year 10) who wrote the exam, but there were only 2 open spots currently which would probably become 5 or 6 at the end of the year.
So yeah, just thought I'd let you know .... :)

Hey mate, that's actually a really great result, but I guess since the standards are really high for these exams, at least one superior would have been necessary. Great effort nonetheless !!!

I'm not too sure about how many students there were for year 11 spots ... sorry :(
-
but 2-4 spots in year 10 though.. i wonder how many spots are in year 11
-
Well, I'm not too sure, but judging from what friends say, I think there'll be around 3-4 spots that would be open. But this is just an estimate ...

BL on the exam, tbh no offense I think you need at least 2-3 superiors to enter mhs and 1-2 for nossal. + having highs aren't great aswell. Overall ur results were pretty good!
-
I really dont think is about ranking, the principal did say there were three types of people who would get in
-
haha thanks! Yeah, also they take co curricular as a large part nowadays! So hopefully we get an interview to show that part!
-
Yeah I got offered a place... and I only got 1 superior

I got 5 superiors and 1 above, I didn't feel like I deserved that, coz I guessed majority of numerical and maths.

Has anyone ever been accepted late into the next year?
