It might not still be the case, but when I was there we had Lenovo Thinkpads. (They didn't cost anything and we gave them back at the end of year 12)

Nice! do you know which kind/series, my school has the new yoga ones, but my sister has this older one called the X230. There are lots of thinkpad laptops out there...

x220. But like I said, it's probably changed since 2012. Don't put the cart before the horse! Get into the school before you worry about booklist items.

We're using Lenovo Thinkpad X220i. The school gave them to us for free (we give them back at the end of year 12). :)

On my tour they said that the school weren't funding laptops anymore, so there's a little more freedom as to which one we can have. Either way, dual device system is awesome :D

Does that mean we have to buy our own, or do they tell us to pay for a specific one?
Or can we buy whatever laptop we want.

Back in my day these telecommunication devices looked like, and felt like bricks. There was even a game of: 'how far can you throw the $30 Nokia before it breaks'. Legend has it that the Nokia broke the ground.

I think they'll provide the same laptops we were given, that is, Lenovo ThinkPad X220i.

For 2015 it is BYO laptop.  I am going to bring my VAX 11/780 ( about 50 years old and the size of a small car but hey I am sure no one will have the same as me ! )

Anyone crazy enough to consider an alienware or Razer laptop?

Personally, I'm going to go for a cheap netbook.

Just tell your parents that game programming is part of the school's special program for talented students, and you are just "testing" the games ...

I am rather disappointed with the BYOD program.  I already have an old laptop and a smart phone with 5MP camera.  I will probably have to use these as my primary and secondary device for 2015.  I was so looking forward to getting a new Ipad  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

ikr. I was looking forward to not carrying any textbooks because they would all be on the ipad :( Idk, at least im getting a good laptop :)

If all the textbooks are going to be on the secondary device ( Ipad etc ) then those people with the smart phones ( like me ) are going to in trouble.  I don't fancy trying to read an ebook on a 3-4 inch screen.  At least I won't be stuck with a Chromebook, that would be the pits, I reckon.  You would not be able to play games on it or install any software.

Shinkaze - good idea, I might have to ask again and see what I can get instead.  It will probably have to be something cheap for the secondary device seeing we are not flushed with funds.  Any suggestions?

Don't worry
I'm gonna be using old tech and lots of other people are gonna do the same.
A new technology is not needed, but it is nice too have a new laptop.

Yeah I love First World problems! Coz it means I have nothing else to worry about!

The subject selections are annoying me.  I don't know what to pick.  I wish I could skip some of the core subjects and just do the electives coz they sound way more interesting!

I hope you are right.  The worst thing would be to be disadvantaged due to not having the "right" technology and end up not being able to certain things required by the syllabus and getting bad grades for it.

So how old are your "old tech"?  Mine is about 4 years old now although it was state of the art at the time when I first got it.

Do you guys think that 13.3" (inches) is too big for a laptop to take to school? Considering the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro.

I think that 13.3 inches would be a good size. You don't want something that's too small or too large, and 13.3" fits right in that gap.

I have decided to use a macbook pro that was purchased by my mum during may. Would this be considered as prior purchase right ?

Technically it is a prior purchase but since there have been no new MacBook released and it has only been a few months since May you could also argue that it is a NEW purchase.  Not that it matters whether you call it prior or new purchase, it is still a damn nice laptop to have.

So is it being used by your mum at the moment so she will get a new laptop now that you are taking that off her?

Ive decided that I will get the Lenovo Thinkpad Lenovo Yoga. Its convertible so good to use for textbook and as a laptop. If anyone is interested in the yoga as well, it is 12.5 inches and is $500 off currently on the lenovo website of every processor. Gonna buy it soon since this deal wont be available for a long time.

Hey! I've finally decided to join you peeps in these forums... My title newbie completely fits my current status. If I make any mistakes in the unspoken/spoken code of forums please do warn me.
Anyway, I have made it in to JMSS! I am actually incredibly confused by this whole dual device thing as well! I have also checked out jmss.it/mdp for information, but I kinda want a more broader opinion. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini, however, I don't think its suitable for study, and I don't plan on using it. It does meet the required battery life and screen, but still, I was thinking of using a tablet instead, like, the ipad, but since the changed the system, I'm not too sure anymore.
In my old school they still have the old laptop charter thing from the government, and apparently my principal says it might be alright for me to outright buy it and use it. It is a Lenovo Thinkpad x131e. I know that this laptop has served me well over the past year, so perhaps it is a good model. However, in our school there was a lot of students who had laptops of this model that bent the plastic hinge in the top left corner because the screw broke. It has also happened to me, and I needed a loan computer for quite a while...

Maybe you can try and persuade your parents, arguing about battery life or something, as the laptop needs an average or at least 6 hours. The lenovo website said up 8.5 hours, however, I will be assuming the laptop has less than what the website claims it has.
For the tablet/ipad/ smartphone, correct me if I'm wrong, only required it to have a 5mp camera. Whilst the laptop was the primary device which required more than 6 hours of battery life.
I'm planning on getting an Ipad Air 2, however, I will probably be buying it in April/May/June and therefore, will need to use my smartphone first. I'm wondering if I'm allowed to do this since I will be using two device, but switching my secondary device after school has started.

That is totally correct.  The only criteria is 6 hour battery life for the primary device (laptop) and 5MP camera for the secondary device ( tablet or smart phone etc ).

I don't see any issue with switching devices in the middle of the year.  After all these thing breaks all the time and I am sure that many people will be using a different secondary ( or even different primary ) device before the year is out.  After all if you had an old device and it breaks, it would be very difficult to buy the same ( now out of date ) device and it would not make sense since a new more up to date device may even be cheaper.

I still don't get how it is all going to work with everyone using a different device.  It has got to be a pain for the staff.  Especially the tech staff.  Imagine going to tech support with some issue regarding your Linux laptop and having problems with your customised display driver ...

I think if we wanted that ourselves we buy it. Otherwise they'll probably suggest just using Google Docs.

Not too sure for virus protection though.

I was wondering if we have to purchase Microsoft Office by ourselves or do JMSS give it to us? Same goes with virus protection.

It is my understanding that we will be using Google Apps for Work so there is no need for Microsoft Office or any other software.  Google Apps has Word Processing ( similar to MS Word ), Spreadsheet ( Excel ), Presentation ( Power Point ) as well as Google Drive to store all your documents in the cloud so you don't even need to carry your documents around with you.  It is because of this that you can choose to have a Chromebook for your primary device because everything will just run off the Chrome browser.  If you have your own laptop it is up to you to maintain it and install an Anti-Virus if you want, but I am not sure if they are going to try to restrict what you install on your own laptop.  There are free anti-virus available so you don't need to buy it anyway.

On a separate note, I currently have MS Office on my school laptop which we had to pay for.  I wonder if that is transferable and if I would be able to use it next year.
