Just a thread on GA1 for Biology, feel free to post and compare :D
So what'd you guys get? Happy with the results? Aiming higher for Unit 4?
I got 83/100 for GA1, which is an A however according to 2013 Grade Distributions for Graded Assessments VCE its a B+ :(
Hopefully for 2014 the stakes are less! ::)
83/100 which personally am quite happy with however I know I could have gotten so much higher if I tried harder!
Study score aims for you guys?
-
My GA1 is 88, A. I hope for a 40+ SS :P
-
My GA1 score is 93
one off a A+ 2013 Grade Distributions for Graded Assessments -__-
-
how do you know the grade distribution?
-
edit: misread your question
here is the 2013 graded assessments released by vcaa

You did great!
-
Wow that's great everyone!
For me 2013, my GA 1 was 75/100 and scaled to 90/100.

Thanks for sharing Rod :)
Btw, did you have a strong cohort? And did your marks get scaled so high because of this, or because you did well on the exam?

I ended up getting 83% in the exam (so 91/110).
My cohort was pretty strong. All subjects at my school last year got scaled up, and by different marks, eg bio up by 15, health 20 something and methods like 4 or 5.
So yeah I would assume it was because of my cohort.

Sorry, this may be a bit off topic- but since I haven't done well at all in Bio this semester, do I still have a chance of getting a 45+ SS?
I've been told that sac scores do not affect the SS and that the SS is dependent on the exam mark only...

SAC marks for bio unfortunately contribute to 40% of the SS. So yes, they do affect you SS, but they change change according to your exam mark.
SACS individually don't contribute much, but as a whole, yes they do.

They do contribute however the exam weighs the most.
-
Hadn't seen this until now. Your GA will moderate also, dependent on how you do on the exam.
If you are equal rank 2nd and smash the exam, you will drastically go up in terms of comparison to other cohorts.
Keep working hard.

Hey guys just a question how did you work out your Ga1 total?
-
It got published on my school's intranet page for my subject results (82% for GA1)

All your unit 3 SACs total to 100. Just add all your marks! Or ask your teacher :)
It got published on my school's intranet page for my subject results (82% for GA1)
Great result! What's your rank?
-
Great result! What's your rank?
No idea. There's about 45 Bio students at my school and a significant amount have scored worse than me, so hopefully I'll be able to achieve over a 30! I'd be happy with that :)
-
Sinse i know my percentages couldnt i just add them all up and divide them by 5? eg in order my results for bio have been 72%,83%,88%,87%, and 88%. so when i average them out my score it is 83.6=84. Would this be my Ga1 result 84?
-
Not necessarily, as some SACs were worth more marks than the other. So you need to add all your marks, not percentages.
For example 12/17, 15/16, 19/25, 16/17 and 24/25.
As all the SACs totalled equal to 100. Adding them will result in 86/100 = A.
-
Asked my teacher today has said my GA1 is 85. Is this any good?
-
Higher than mine! Congrats
-
how highly/lowly (if thats a word) can VCAA moderate your sacs?
-

Mine were moderation 15 marks up for each unit. So 30 in total.
They can go down, can stay the same, or go up. Depends on your cohort + how well you do in the exam

Are you sure that's how you calculate your raw GA1 score? I thought it was something among the lines of this:
Hypothetically speaking,
First SAC, worth 60% you received 19/20
Second SAC, worth 30% you received 18/20
Third SAC, wroth 10% you received 15/20
Then your Raw GA 1 score would be = .6 x 95 + .3 x 90 + .1 x 75 = 91.5%
As opposed to the average which would be ~ 87%
Correct me if I'm wrong :)

That was the case with my methods SACs. However for biology, my teacher made all SACs equal to 100, so the GA mark would be your SAC marks accumulated. :)

I know people have explained this over and over again, but I'm just making sure.
I got 88/100 for unit 3 and I'm ranked first in a weak cohort. Does this mean that if I stay rank 1 for unit 4, I'm not effected by my class, and If I got 100% on the exam (not going to happen) I would get a 50 ?

Yep. Moderation generally will not affect the top one or two students if they drastically stand out from their cohort.
VCAA use marker points, i.e. 4th student, 10th students and 16th student to know how to scale not only the cohort as a whole but even segments of the cohort as well.
-
94/100 for unit 3 and ranked solid 2nd in a weak cohort...are my chances of getting a 40 out of reach (assuming that I maintain my marks of course)? :-\
Also, according to the graded distributions (http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/statistics/2013/section3/vce_biology_ga13.pdf), only 94+ is considered an A+?
-
how highly/lowly (if thats a word) can VCAA moderate your sacs?
It can be completely ridiculous. Even something like +30-40 marks is possible, which is why your raw SAC marks aren't indicative of, well, anything

30 to 40! Really!
Scooby do you mind sharing your GA 1 AND 2 results for chem and biology, and they obviously both scaled to 100

Sure thing
Bio GA 2: 192/200 --> 200/200 (back in my there was only one GA for Bio SACs ahaha)
Chem
- GA 1: 85/100 --> 92/100 (missed out on an A+ there, ohh well)
- GA 2: 88/100 --> 100/100

Did these scale according to your exam mark? Or cohort rank?
-
Btw, how do you calculate your GA1 score or whatever?
-
Did these scale according to your exam mark? Or cohort rank?
It'll scale according to cohort exam performance. Your individual exam mark doesn't mean much in terms of SAC moderation (unless you're an outlier in both cases)
-
Btw, how do you calculate your GA1 score or whatever?
You can't. Only way to know is to get a statement of study score
-

So basically how well my school does, determines my SAC marks? Even if I'm rank 1?
-

Nah, if you're rank 1 and you do well in the exam, you won't be dragged down, even if your cohort in general does pretty crap
-
And that only applies to rank 1? Fff..
-
I'm so screwed >:(
-
Apparently its generally rank 1-3ish who don't get affected?
-
what happens if your say rank 5-6, but the people above you are really strong, but the people below you are weak and the difference between you and rank 1 is no more then 3-4 marks, how will i get affected?
-
And that only applies to rank 1? Fff..
Well, you're safest if you're ranked first, but if you've got two or more people in your cohort who do well on the exam, you'll be fine ranked second
-

It depends on a lot of things, really. If you're ranked first with a 100% SAC average, even if you do well on the exam, that mark is likely going to get scaled down, even if you're in a pretty strong cohort (unless you do extraordinarily well). It's not as if strong cohort = marks scaled up and weak cohort = marks scaled down. It is generally the case, but that's because marking tends to be more harsh with stronger cohorts and much more lenient with weaker cohorts. If you're performing well in a weak cohort (and everyone is else is doing crap), in all likelihood your cohort's SAC scores won't be scaled down at all, even though you're in a weak cohort. Moderation is mainly to take care of discrepancies in marking leniency/harshness, rather than cohort strength. Even if your cohort is weak, it doesn't mean your marks will be scaled down, just as being in a strong cohort doesn't guarantee that they'll be scaled up.
It depends on a lot of factors and it's hard to predict anything. We're only just over half way through the year - most of the assessment is yet to come. Just focus on doing well and let the technicalities of the system take care of themselves.

Definitely agree with Scooby here.
Just focus on doing your best at this stage. The moderation that VCAA does can be good for some and bad for others, but I realised from doing Further last year (where people freak out about one mark) that it's not worth worrying about.
Sure it's nice to have the added security of a certain ranking, but really, you can gain that same security by focussing on doing extra revision or more practice for exams. Remember that the exams make up the majority of your study score.
-
Thanks heaps for that
-
This is more of a question about further, I won't make any more posts on further, but just wanted to ask Zealous something.
How many marks can I drop through out the year and ace the exam and get 50, with a perfect no moderation system. Does that make sense?
So I got lost 15 marks throughout the year, ace the exam = 50?
-
There's no way you'd get a 50 in Further with 15 marks lost on SACs in a "no moderation" system. But that just doesn't show anything :s. if you full marked the exams your SACs would likely be higher than that anyway.
-
Yeah i also thought so, was just wondering (thankfully im not in that position) - if you know, how many marks would be dropped in a year for someone who could ace or close to ace the exam.
-
how come some ppl get scaled up so much and others dont?!
-
Just received my results today: 96/100! :D I'm not too sure if I am rank 1 anymore; I am in a strong cohort. Regardless, well done to everyone who has posted on this thread! Best of luck for unit 4!

Got an 80/100 for my GA1, would have probably got 83 if I hadn't bombed on my first SAC (14/25). I go to a selective school with a very strong cohort. Even with an 80/100 I'm probably ranked 20-25/100. Provided we perform strongly on our exams, what would you expect 80/100 to scale up to?

I second this.

Are ranks for unit 3 and 4 separate or not?

I second this.
What, precisely?

potentially 90-100, depending on how well is 'well'.

Really don't know, it's only the second year people are our school have completed 3/4 studies. It's ranked 25 in Vic for median ATAR and 30 for SS's above 40. It's definately not the strongest of the selective school, probably tied with Nossal (don't know about JMSS though).
Edit: Just saw that we're in third place 8)

They're separate

They're separate
So at the end of the year, there will be 2 rank 1 students? :/

I'm confused as well :-\

MHS sacs for unit 4 last year scaled from like 80 to 100 or something like that

Wot
-
So at the end of the year, there will be 2 rank 1 students? :/
You'll have a separate ranking for GA 1 (Unit 3) and GA 2 (Unit 4). They're moderated independently of one another, meaning that they won't necessarily be scaled up/down by the same amount.
-
Wot
Yeah it's crazy - shows how hard the SACs are but moreso how strong the students are.
Just found out that last year's bio cohort scaled from 72-->87 median score, so hopefully my 80 can crack into the A+ range.
