Hey guys,
I've got subject selections for year 12 coming up and I've got a couple questions.
So the subjects that I'm definitely going to do are:
English language
Chemistry
Methods
Specialist
I'm intending to do a uni subject, but I'm tied between uni chem and uni maths. I was thinking of applying for chemistry at Monash uni and maths at Melbourne uni; in this case, I could do both for some time, and drop one depending on which I prefer.
The only problem being that I don't meet the prerequisite subject of GMA for Melbourne.
Do you think it's possible to do some kind of competency test to qualify for it? I've emailed Melbourne uni but they haven't responded... has anyone done such a test?
I know maths at Melbourne is different to Monash, but at this stage i just want to maximise my chances of getting an offer (and I don't mind either maths or chem).
Now, in the case that i don't get any offers for uni subjects, I'm tied between English and physics. I currently do both for year 11, and I don't really prefer one over the other.
Physics is not fascinating, but nor is English. I'm doing slightly better in physics, but that's partly because I don't put any effort whatsoever into English (just cramming before SACs). I put more effort into physics only because we are given deadlines for homework.
However, I wouldn't say either subjects are difficult. Is year 11 physics a good indication of year 12?

Uni maths would be utterly impossible without knowing the content from year 12 methods well.

I beg to differ.
While I can't speak for Melbourne, I've done MTH1035 at Monash which is almost identical to the Monash extension program, and anything from methods/spec that you need won't be coming up until 3/4 of the way through the year. Most else is stuff you won't have seen before and wouldn't see otherwise.
I've also done CHM1051 which is identical to the first half of MUEP chem - and not having already done 3/4 chem (and maybe some physics) is going to be incredibly difficult.
IMO, MUEP maths would be your best bet (UMEP might also work, I just don't know the unit stuff). However, I also know of someone who did two MUEP courses last year, so if you want to do both, you can apply and see what happens.
