I feel so traitorous posting here and I promise I'll go away soon buuuuuuuut... The applications for VCESS 2015 have opened!
I know a lot of AN-ers always turn up every year, I myself have been involved over the last couple of years and have really enjoyed it. I think VCESS does some fantastic work and they're always on the look out for high achievers, especially if you did some of the "rarer" subjects! I see it as my chance to give back to those less fortunate, but everyone has their own reasons :)

Thanks for that! :)

How competitive is it when it comes to more popular subjects? I'd like to volunteer for Biology Units 3 & 4 but I'd just like to know my chances (it won't stop me from applying but I'm only asking so I know what to expect). Thanks. :)

The more the merrier! More tutors they can have, the greater number of students they can take in. So it's a win-win situation. You have a very good chance :)

From experience they seem to look for keen teachers with decent academic records. I'm sure you tick both boxes with ease :)
-
Not really relevant in terms of the topic at hand but I'd thought I'd ask!
Do you guys know roughly when do applications open for people who want to attend VCESS?

Later this term (assuming it's Term 3? I have no idea where school is that these days haha), you can register interest now though http://umsu.unimelb.edu.au/jump-in/summerschool/enrol/

And yeah it is Term 3 now LOL

Applied for Chemistry and Mathematical Methods Subject Tutor, and Subject Coordinator in Chemistry! :D
Oh my gosh yes please be the chem subject coordinator!!
-
Oh wow what an initiative! I'll be so keen for this in about eight to nine years time! :D Keep up the good work guys! :)
Good to see that Monash (with vTextbook) isn't the only uni with good initiatives around town! :)
:)
-
Thanks for letting me know about this. I'm definitely going to do it next next year for health :) :) :)
-
I guess I'll apply for biology and psychology. They better give us notes to work off of, because I never actually...took VCE biology...and the entire content of VCE psychology changed the year after I left, alongside scaling. Hahahaha.

Love you
-
I wanna do it but 1) am I too old 2) my thesis defence is legit during that camp.
-
I'm sorely tempted (for Biology and Environmental Science), but I think I'll wait until I a) have familiarised myself with the new Environmental Science study design and b) am not younger than a handful of the students.
-
Is EAL much different to mainstream english?

They do provide notes! Unless you're the subject coordinator, then you have to write the notes. :3

The camp is completely optional! And and you're definitely not to old! There are a couple unimelb tutors who are in it!!

-
Doitdoitdoitdoitdoit
You can come to my chem class (given I get one) and steal all the chocolate !!
-
If I actually do this, I'll buy my students chocolate AND THEN EAT IT ALL ON THE TEN MINUTE WALK TO UNI.

It says you have to go to either training or camp. But for the training I would kind of be PREPARING for my oral defence.
-
So I put my application in well over a week ago, should I have heard back by now? (no confirmation or anything)

Oh okay that's fine then, can do
-
yaaaaaayyyyyyyyy vcess with simpakkk <3
-
Does that mean I can do it too, even if I have a November/December class? ヽ(´▽`)ノ
EDIT: I applied! I hope this isn't something I regret :C
-

I haven't applied yet - can you remind me like the night before the deadline??

Same here. :/
-
Same here. :/
I just got mine today. I e-mailed the guy in charge the other day about it and he indicated that the "submitted" page means that you've heard from them, even though that page said expect to him from us in the next few days or something I think. Oh well, they've just got a lot of applications to get through, so slow going I guess!
-
yeah, i got my email today also. just give it time, theyll get there :3
-
Yah they're a student run initiative and with their own uni and whatnot (these guys also tend to be involved in a bunch of other things) they tend to take their time with all the emails and interviews and whatnot, just give them time :P
-
Yeah I got mine this morning so it's all cool.
-
Hi gang,
My name's Tom and I'm one of the VCE Summer School's Directors for 2015. Great to see that some of you have already applied to tutor at VCESS next year - those that have will have received an email from me already. I'm happy to answer any questions that you guys might have about VCE Summer School, what our program is like, and what tutoring involves. Don't be afraid to send me a PM with any queries you might have!
The application form can be found here: http://umsu.unimelb.edu.au/jump-in/summerschool/volunteer/
-
I haven't received an email yet :'( Does this mean I've been rejected?
-
Not having received an email yet doesn't mean you've been rejected, it just means that you probably sent in your application after we sent around the first round of confirmation emails. There'll be another round of confirmation emails that get sent after tutor applications close at 5pm today. If you don't get one by the end of the week, feel free to email me at [email protected] and ask what's up.
-
How did #teamAN do on the interview front? :D
From experience, interviews are pretty chill so no need to be nervous or in a suit or anything haha :)
-
Oh I thought everyone got an interview?
No?
K.

dafuq, I haven't been notified for an interview.
EDIT: Just checked my emails, a notification is there. LOL!
-
Even though everyone who applied probably got an interview, when I received my interview time I still did a little happy dance and span around in circles for a few minutes. <3
-
I thought they forgot about me, found the email in my junk folder recently
-
Is this only for Unit3/4 subjects?
If I want to volunteer for the biology, but my study score was mid 30's, but my biol subjects @ first year were H2A and H1, would they still accept me?
And will I need to read something before I go in to teach? As in, do I need to make myself familar with the course again.
PS: I want to apply for next year's one.
-
It's for both 1/2 and 3/4
I don't think they even ask you your marks at all.
You and the students are provided with notes, so just make sure you're familiar with the content in them before you teach.

Awesome, this would be something I would love to do.
Looking forward to applying next year then :)

How did you guys go? :) I got a position as an English tutor, although I didn't even put english down as a preference.. confused/10

That's pretty good work then!
I'm tutoring Biology and have unwittingly landed myself subject coordinator for Spanish :p
-
VCE Biology Units 3 & 4 tutor. :)
-
ain't no party like a chem 3/4 party!
-
Bilology.
I can't go to camp though, only to the training day. And I leave for Japan at 11pm on the night of the training day.
Cutting it fine.
-
I've gotten English 3/4!
-
Biology 1/2 :) I wasn't expecting anything after my interview, so this is a nice surprise <3
-
Is anyone doing special teams? They're so much fun (especially Activities *cough*)!
Everyone should come to camp also, it's a blast. VCESS will basically be the best two weeks of your life.
Also if you'd like you can run workshops as well. There are four one hour slots for workshops across the program. Some of the ones last year were gender studies of Disney films, Magic the Gathering tutorials, juggling practice, dance classes, volleyball, and so on. I ran two creative writing classes and two human rights classes which were both really fun to do. So if there's something you're really interested in or passionate about or good at make sure to consider turning it into a workshop**!
Another thing - get involved with helping out for the extra-curricular stuff. Activities are always looking for people to assist with barbecuing and hosting bases for the scav hunt and so on. VCESS is really one of those things where the more you put in, the more you get out.
**Not including workshops on being awesome at VCE internet forums.
-
Awesome to see so many of you guys running classes at VCESS! Hopefully I get to meet more of you guys then! :)
-
Was anyone else at drinks tonight?
-
So uh
Thanks to Marine Botany, I can't go to the training day OR the camp, what should I do?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Let the directors know ASAP, and they'll sort something else out.
-
You can go to the refresher day next year, most likely.
-
Now a chem 3/4 tutor (thank god, I would not have been able to teach english to a respectable standard :P ). Apparently it was just an accidental mix up (woooot!)
-
weeeeeeee!! chem club!
-
Was anyone else at drinks tonight?
;--; I was doing an experiment till 10
My last one for Hons tho (y)
-
out of curiosity, what sort of questions did they ask in the interviews?
-
they always start the interview with an ice breaker question
then generic why do you want to do vcess, what subjects do you want to tutor, do you wanna team teach?
then they hit you with scenarios, what do you do if you ave a rowdy student? what do you do if you can't answer a student's question? etc.
-
Ah thanks, that helps heaps. I'm trying to become an O-week host, I reckon they'll ask similar questions
-
Hey guys,
The VCESS Directors are still looking for tutors in a few subjects, so if you know any tutors who can help out with English or LOTEs (especially Indonesian) we'd greatly appreciate it.
-
WHOS GOING TO CAMP :DDDDD
-
WHOS GOING TO CAMP :DDDDD
No can you please go to training day with me instead? I don't want to be a loner/loser and I'm in Japan during the camp. I leave for Japan at 11pm on the training day.
-
camp tho
-
I will have the pleasure of missing both camp and training day, and attending only the refresher day :'D I'm going to be so out of my depth.
-
But caaaaaaamppp
-
The things I do for seaweed :')
-
WHOS GOING TO CAMP :DDDDD
I am still not sure. I might just go to the training day.
-
out of curiosity, what sort of questions did they ask in the interviews?
The first question they asked was whether I liked Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus.
Then they mostly asked me about my teaching methodology and what I can do to help students and get them involved, i.e. if a student was struggling but too shy to ask for help etc.
-
CAMP THO.
-
Hey guys, I hope all of you who have signed up to tutor at VCESS are getting excited for the program! Just a reminder to our tutors here on AN to fill out your Tutor Training Form online if you haven't already.
If you haven't filled it out, or would like to help out with our Academic Seminars (where you get up and have a chat about your course) or our Workshops (where you teach kids a new skill for an hour), let me know and I'll send you the relevant links.
If you've got any further questions, let me know and I'll do my best to help out!
-
I passed the working with children check! :D
-
Haha it'd be pretty concerning if you didn't :P
-
Haha it'd be pretty concerning if you didn't :P
I wonder if anyone applying doesn't pass lol
-
I can't fill out the form because I can only attend the Refresher Day, not either training session :(
-
Don't worry about not being able to fill it out for now - we'll post something specific to Refresher Day in mid-December.
-
I enjoyed today heaps, especially meeting so many users!~ :D

I've never had to print at the university before. How much does it cost to print? I have about 20 worksheets I need to print off for my VCE Summer School class, and with about 10 students in my class it's going to be 200+ pages, so I don't really want to do it at home.

That'll cost you about 20 bucks. Have you spoken to Ops though? Surely they'd be able to do it?

Yikes! That's actually quite a bit. I'll contact Ops and see what they can do then.
-
They should have given you all the worksheets you'll need?
-
I've got Ops to print extra stuff for me over the last couple of years, they should be fine with it! :)
-

There are absolutely none for Biology - the book just contains content. Hence, I've been very busy this week making worksheets and designing all sorts of fun activities for my Biology class! :D

Tell me about it. I'm coordinating a subject as well as taking Biol so it's like "oh fek" right now
-
Ops might be able to print it but 200 pages is a lot/would also take some time. Maybe make a post on the Facebook page ASAP, and hopefully someone will make the relevant arrangements. Or email the directors.

I just emailed the directors, and asked that if there are any problems that they contact me ASAP.

Awks I just sent them a similar amount to print via email :3 It is just a once-off though haha
-

If you need confirmation pretty soon, try the Facebook page. They're pretty swamped with e-mails so they take a fair while to get back (e.g. I e-mailed them Friday and haven't heard back yet) :)
-

Haha it'll probably be fine, I just don't want for anyone to contact OPs thinking that they'll definitely print it and then be disappointed if they can't. In general though I've found that if I ask for something well ahead of time someone at VCESS is usually able to sort it out (which you guys are doing now!).
In case anyone isn't part of the Facebook group for tutors, make sure to join it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/307552246097334/345367918982433/
There's heaps of important information circulated by the directors and other team leaders, as well as questions asked by other tutors with answers you might need!
-
Yeah fair enough haha.
edit: my printing request got approved YEYE
Just split the UoM General chat VCESS discussion and merged it here for organisation :)

LESS THAN 15 HOURS TO GO.

Hey everyone, glad to hear that we're all super excited for VCESS, and that you guys are being so prepared for your classes - trust me, the kids will see the benefit of your preparation. Just a couple of quick notes from the Directors:
- As Mr T-Rav pointed out, we're currently super swamped with emails. Apologies if we haven't been replying to them (especially Cam, who's dealing with all the student requests and a lot of tutor requests as well), but it is literally a case of not having time to reply to everyone. As such, please assume your emails are being read and don't take it to heart if you haven't received a reply straight away.
- As far as printing study materials goes, it is something that the Operations team can handle, but please bear in mind that they'll be EXTREMELY busy tomorrow (probably even busier than the Directors) sorting out the registration of students, the printing of timetables, checking classes and generally checking up on all the students (and tutors) who haven't bothered to communicate with us and are now behind the 8-ball as a result. If you need to print things for your classes tomorrow, please prepare them beforehand and take them to the Operations team during the lunch hour if you're in block 1, or the hour before your class otherwise - it'll be when their office is quieter and when there are less likely to be other things more deserving of their time. As with everything at VCESS, please let them know you'll be coming (I'd take the time to write an email asking their permission) and you'll have a much greater chance of a positive result.
- AN will probably not be a major forum for communication between tutors and Directors during the program - I basically just opened up this thread on a hunch tonight just in case. If you have a question that you think only the Directors can answer, please email us at [email protected]. If you have a question you think one of the other tutors in the program can answer, please direct it to the Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/307552246097334/).
TL;DR Directors are too busy to reply to emails (for now), please be nice to Ops regarding printing study materials, and don't rely on this thread to get your questions answered by Directors.

One class down and I'm pretty sure my entire class is convinced I'm a nutcase. :D

ENGLISH LECTURE TIME #gethype

I thought it might be a good idea to have the students sit down and work on something as they walked into the class, thinking that perhaps they would be a bit too energetic or excited from all the fun. In hindsight, it was the worst thing I could've done - nobody laughed at my jokes, answered any questions or talked to each other. Even the ice-breaker was a bit of a flop. -.- I guess I shouldn't base my vision of a class on what they were like for me at my school. XD Time to bring out the big guns: group games, quizzes, and chocolate. :D

Haha, I could use a keen bean like you!
By the way, how far in did you Biology tutors get in your first class? I anticipated I'd get to the end of "the cell" but only reached the end of "molecules of life" - and that was without even getting around to any activities other than the initial ice-breaker. I know I tend to go through content rather slowly and thoroughly, but I really thought I'd get through more than just three pages. >_<

I know I'm not a Biology tutor but for my first class for Bio we only got through the first two pages (unofficially it's three since we didn't go over it but talked about what was on Page 3) of the booklet which happened after watching videos centred on Monomers. As we went through the booklet my tutor picked out questions from past VCAA exams and we went through them as a class :)
On a general note: Good work for VCESS so far! It's quite enjoyable!
-
*Phew* Your class was similar to mine then, although I mainly got people drawing rather than watching a video. I heard some classes getting well into metabolism, which genuinely concerned me about my pace.
-
I got up to metabolism and tomorrow I hope to reach the end of nervous system \o/
-

Haha yeah watching the video was a bit awkward since it was quite longer than 5 minutes but I guess being our first lesson and how awkward/quiet we all were it was the right decision in hindsight I think LOL

Dat trivia tho.

Who is the person from my class who said they knew me from AN? REVEAL YOURSELF.

That was my intention, but now that I've actually taken a class I feel like I'm just too slow to keep to my schedule. May I ask how you go about taking your class? Generally I'm content going slow (my motto for VCE has always been to do it slow and do it right the first time) but I realised that if I keep up at this pace I won't even complete immunity. I know I shouldn't rush through for the sake of it but I feel I owe my students more than a brief overview of less than half the year's course. The only way I can see myself moving at a more appropriate pace is to cut out a lot of the activities I had planned. :/
-
I generally don't refer to the book unless there's a mistake or I want to emphasise something really important (eg 'make sure you know this table' or 'memorise that definition') or add something to something in the book eg add something into a diagram or graph. I basically introduce a topic in a couple of sentences and then going into harder content. I draw a lot of pictures on the board that I've planned out beforehand (haven't been using technology because it tends to waste time imo and I suck at setting up a projector/computer) and then ask people questions or to contribute in order to draw the pictures/teach the class. Get people to come up and draw/write on the board. Ask people if they understood everything --> move on to the next topic.
I am a fan of the broader overview thing. I feel like I'm going through the most important points in each of the classes, without spending much time on things that can be rote learned without much conceptual understanding (eg plant hormones). I decided to do it this way because everyone in the class is at a different level in terms of what they already know, prereading etc - by covering more things, even in less detail, you appeal to a wider proportion of the class. Otherwise some people get overly bored/don't learn anything because you spend the whole time going through something they already understand. I would prefer to go over something in less detail and ask people to approach me to talk about it if they didn't understand properly, or they want further clarification. But there's no 'right way' to teach any of this - this approach might appeal to some students and a slower more complete approach might appeal more easily to others.
I finished everything I wanted to go through today, without spending as much time on the action potential as I would have liked to, but it's okay!
-
Thanks, simpak. :) It sounds like your activities are really streamlined and aren't overly involved or complicated, which is something I overlooked in my lesson planning. Other than that, I think I just need to let go and stop worrying about all the little details! (But, the details... T_T jk XD)
I was foolish to believe private tutoring and taking a class were similar. I guess I learnt that one the hard way! ^_^

There will be a lot of variation in the classes anyway. It's worth remembering that a lot of the kids involved in this programme will have come from schools with pretty poor science programmes and may not have a solid grounding in science at all. So if things are going a little slow, don't fret too much. To pick your speed you need to make sure that they're understanding what you're saying and at the same time, aren't bored because you've said it so much. I'm sure you're doing a great job :)
-
Urgh 9am class tomorrow. I haven't woken up in the am for some weeks now... >_<

Thank you very much for the kind words. :) Today went really really well; I managed to almost catch up with my schedule and still managed to run my intended class activities. I think it was just the initial class that must have thrown me off a little because now I feel content with how I ran things.
-
Well done Stick! It does take a couple of lessons to get your head around how to best run things for your particular class (even for an old hand like myself!) :D

m9 like 5/7 of my classes are 9am starts haha (every day this week!). Worst.
Has anyone been doing workshops? Get involved with Scav/BBQs if you can, they're great fun!
-
Glad to hear you're feeling better about it Stick! I'm sure you're doing great anyway. I feel as if my structure is becoming repetitive and boring now, haha.
-
Thank you very much for the kind words. :) Today went really really well; I managed to almost catch up with my schedule and still managed to run my intended class activities. I think it was just the initial class that must have thrown me off a little because now I feel content with how I ran things.
Wew fantastic news mate!

Had two classes today...one at 9, one at 3.15. I mean, really Ops? :p

You're all doing better than me, nobody in my class likes talking or discussion so when I try and get them to ask questions they just sit there quietly and stare into my soul. So I've ended up just talking for an hour and then handing out a list of resources + practice questions at the end. I'm also ridiculously behind because I explained everything too thoroughly in lesson one and also got through 3 pages :')

I know dem feels. :|
As already stated in recent posts: half the battle is somewhat letting go. You can't cover the entire course properly in just 6 lessons - if it could be done, it would. I also know this is much easier said than done. Additionally, you'll have to be more clever about your activities: simpak's suggestion of getting students to draw on the board is a good one; another is to simply call upon students to provide an answer, rather than waiting for a volunteer (which is often the same individual/s). That can stimulate discussion as a lot of the Biology exam questions are "suggest why" type questions that require students to come up with their own explanation drawing upon the major concepts in the course and you can gain insight to a variety of different approaches and suggestions to the same question. The biggest lesson I've learnt so far is that we simply don't have time to play elaborate group games - they may be fun, help students relax a little and could even be a really effective learning tool, but ultimately they're not efficient enough for what we need to do.
I hope I don't lapse back into bad habits tomorrow. :P

I am asking them questions directly :( They really don't like talking during class :') I have ten mini-mes lumped together in one space (but they're happy to ask after the class, at least).

Take a leaf out of scribble's book and bribe them with candy :P
-
^ HAHA it totally doesn't work. One of my students comes up to me today and she's like "I don't answer your questions in class even though I know the answers, because you'll give me candy anyways." THATS NOT HOW THE GAME WORKS.
She was also like "we had a spesh sub today and he swears as much as you do ಠ_ಠ"
"Oh really? Who was it?"
"His name's pi"
"...of course it was"
Moderator action: removed real name, sorry for the inconvenience

Sadly my VCESS journey has had to come to an end prematurely due to unforeseen circumstances, but it was a fantastic experience being able to meet such a ginormous bunch of amazing people <3 <3
I hope I'll be back to tutor in the future :D #VCESS4lyf
-
:'( I never even got to meet you!! We're teaching the same subject toooooo

Oh yeah, to follow on from this:
Who is the person from my class who said they knew me from AN? REVEAL YOURSELF.
Said person mentioned that they saw this post (in class today) and refused to tell me their username LOL

Well I'm guessing that you were one of the two girls I was talking to she we split off into those group chats for subjects haha. I was the one who had no idea what she was doing because she'd never tutored before, and you guys were giving me tips :P I also wore a skirt with fried eggs on them if that helps lol? I have super long brown hair too :)

Who's keen for some scav hunting!?!?!
-
I would but I have to be at the lab :<
-
I got a pretty sweet star wars themed station again with light sabers and swimming noodles. My instructions to groups: "Beat the crap out of each other", great fun to watch :D

Ah damn I did miss out on an awesome day today... I didn't come to VCESS today since I felt queasy after Friday (possibly the BBQ lunch I dunno) and I've been in a bad state ever since (parents wouldn't allow me to come today because of it)... I'll be there tomorrow though but damn what a day that would have been >.<
-
:O Hope you're feeling better!
Yeah was a pretty fun day, but I have heard that Beach Day will supersede that (especially because it hasn't run in the last 3 years due to overly hot temperatures)!

Thanks I am definitely now after a whole day's rest :)
I don't know what to expect of Beach Day since I have heard the same thing from previous students of VCESS (funnily the one that told me was in your Spesh class last year LOL) but I'll bring my shirt and see if my friends are going or not!
-
I want to go to the beach but instead I have to inject cells ):
-
Pretty much. I was transfecting cells and doing thermal denaturations today :<
-
Didn't get to go to the beach today unforts, was stuck in the office with a mail merge disaster. Worst.
English lectures are done, which is nice. Definitely a lot of fun but quite tiring. #BlankSpace
Only three days to go ):
-
^It's gone by so quickly :O
Also dodgeball was a nice workout today too LOL
-
The lack of pink today is concerning.

The lack of pink today is concerning.
I'm doing my part, calling out the user eeps for not wearing pink as a tutor. Poor form mate.
-
Tertiary expo today was a slight letdown, seemed like a distinct lack of non-Victorian universities (also the UoM Arts Faculty seemed to have nothing bar the single piece of paper)
;( last spesh class tomorrow with pi, it's all gone by so quickly
-
I don't think my students are going to miss me at all. BUT I'M BRINGING THEM A LOT OF LOLLIES TOMORROW TO MAKE THEM LOVE ME >:I

Anyone else helping out tomorrow at the academic seminars? Looks like I'm the sole rep for Monash med, time to sell us to the next generation of med student wannabes 8) #monashmasterrace

I think the pleasure was ours to have such a free willed and intelligent person as a tutor!

After three years, probably my last year in the program, good fun to do my part and best of luck to all the VCESS'ers, hope you all decide to come back as tutors in a few years! :)

I had a fun time at VCESS catching up with old friends and making new friends (that includes you zyzz101 ;) )
Learnt some new things from the classes too and ultimately 2 weeks well spent (despite being tired each night).
Definitely considering helping out in a couple of years time when I'm able to do so!
