It's that time of the year again! http://destination.monash/open-day/
Personally when I was in VCE, I found it really helpful to come down and explore my options, talking to current lecturers and current students from a variety of courses (loljks I'm Indian so my choices were Med, Law or Eng...) and get a feel of uni life. I'd highly recommend that you go, even if Monash isn't your first pref (you should seriously reconsider your life up to this point if it isn't #monashmasterrace) or you just want to rake up some quality freebies :)
Definitely worth a visit, and there are usually some friendly AN faces around too! I've been involved in the Med area for the past two years and have met many younger AN-ers during that time (I'll be involved in FRACP exams this Sunday, so won't be making an appearance, sorry eeps).
So come on down!

These freebies also include helium filled balloons - if you love* balloons, definitely come!
*=if you don't love balloons, you have no soul and we don't want you at Monash anyway. :P

To those coming on Open Day, have questions to ask! Reading brochures and information online is vastly different from asking and talking to current students at Monash, who can give you a more realistic and specific insight into what it's like to study a particular degree or course. Don't be afraid to ask questions, no matter how stupid or silly you think it may be (something I've learnt from when I attended past open days).
Currently in my third year (same as pi), and the biggest piece of advice I'd give is to really make the most of the day. Beyond the events and freebies on the day, talk to current students - ask what they study, what a typical week involves for him/her, contact hours and so forth. For those thinking of going to the Caulfield campus, drop by the BusEco faculty which is situated in the H building (contains different departments) and hear about the various courses on offer as well as perspectives from current students on panels. We'll be wearing "Monash University - Business and Economics" shirts, so it won't be hard to find us. Hope to see some of you there.

Very saddened by this.

^Same thing as eeps. I'm helping out in BusEco Faculty, but in Clayton Campus. I can't believe we're all in 3rd year now. You can spot me really easily, I'm probably going to be the only ambassador there wearing both a Monash Open Day hoodie and the BusEco T - shirt.
If you are looking for some Accounting, Finance or Economics major advice, come to me. If you are depressed, happy, oppressed by asian parents wanting to make you study medicine / law / eng / accounting (JOKING), in a 'should I break up with my gf / bf to study harder in year 12' situation, also come to me for advice.
If you are looking for some advice about future uni fees, seek Student Services because we can't really talk about it. None of the proposed fee changes have been finalised because legislation hasn't been passed yet.

I will be helping out the MNHS faculty, talking to students about my experiences in psych. But few days ago had a sore throat, and today woke up with 1/2 my voice gone LOL Hopefully will be recovered b4 tmr haha :S

This speaks to me on a spiritual and emotional level :'(

I was kidding btw :P My parents were pretty open to letting me do whatever I wanted :)
-
Be sure to visit the Faculty of Science :D spent the last 2 days packing all the bags with the brochures in it :(

where would most of the freebies be found? :)

The best freebies will be at the areas where your desired courses will have set-ups, stalls and lectures, this is because the greatest freebies you get from Open Day are inspiration, wisdom and hopefully a direction in life that appeals to you :)

Peninsula Campus had a lot of free mentos last year in its physio and OT labs. Ate so many I didn't feel like lunch.

I'm gonna be outside the Monash Connect Entrance handing out brochures in the freezing cold :-[

Ambassadors will be handing out goodie bags outside the law library (right entrance from the bus loop) and outside Robert Blackwood Hall. Still, you can find plenty of good things in faculty areas, as Pi said. If you go by engineering, see if you can find me - I'll be the small non-Asian. :P

how do people who live far away from the uni usually travel? i live on the other side of town from monash and i was wondering the best way to get there tomorrow for open day (and for when uni starts i guess)

Monash has some free bus services that might be suitable for you. Otherwise, you can catch any train to Huntingdale station (on the Pakenham/Cranbourne lines) and catch the 601 on North road (if it runs, pretty sure it will on open day, but not too sure) or the 900 smart bus to Rowville.
-
Definitely recommend any prospective students talk to DisaFear (Science) and aes_999 (Commerce) if you're at Clayton tomorrow. Two great people who are very knowledgeable - chances are you might end up talking to them without realising it.
-
I will also be at the open day, taking the scenic route to the fitness centre as I pretend to be in year 12 & pick up whatever free USBs are on offer with my friend who actually is in year 12. You will have no way of recognising me, nor I you, but I just thought you'd like to know all the same.

Anyone live in the western suburb (around Point Cook and such), how long does it take to get to Monash and if so, are you used to the travel time?

Takes about 1-1.5hrs in the peak time. I didn't get used to it so I moved out.

Is there plenty of parking spaces and will it be diffcult to find a parking space?

Almost EVERYWHERE is open parking-wise, you should be fine. All permit zones are inactive during open day - I suggest parking either near Robert Blackwood Hall or the old oval which will be opened up for parking tomorrow. (not quite sure where this oval is, I just know that it's open... :P)
You can also refer here for a more detailed explanation of parking places.

The best kept freebie secret at Open Day (Clayton Campus) is free BBQ, courtesy of the awesome people at Education faculty. They usually open from 10 o'clock. Get them quick, cause they run out of food really fast.

If you see an Asian-looking guy with a mono-brow and running around with a bag full of pens, then that's me!!!
-
Open day's a fantastic idea, it'll get prospective students ready for the never-ending and fairly disruptive stream of construction that'll inevitably be around the entirety of their degree. I mean, it's been a week and I still haven't found a convenient way of getting to HAL from Medicine -_-
Year 12s, this shouldn't need saying but take everything that Faculty reps are handing out. If you're planning on doing a degree like Science with multitudes of options, any pamphlets about majors/minors etc. are going to be really useful in helping decide what path(s) you go down. A year ago I would have noped my way out of here if anyone suggested doing a developmental biology major, but late last year I found a brochure detailing the major and realised it aligned exactly with my interests.
tl;dr Bring a big bag for all your shit!

Love talking to the parents of students, where the parent(s) asks all the questions and the student just stands there.
- Talked to a 14-year old who was dead-set on doing Accounting at university. His mum was like "I'm not forcing him to, he loves it".
- Got asked if dentistry/medicine was offered at Caulfield.
u wot m8

What a day. I was at uni helping out from 9:30 to 4:00pm. So many parents came and asked questions. There was a year 9 student came to the med faculty and said he is studying for UMAT now and he thinks with 4 years of study, he would certainly get 100%tile and get into Med for sure. And he asked me how much he would earn if he becomes a neurosurgeon :S

Wow, lol. That's a little extreme. I wonder how he'd react if by chance the UMAT ceased to exist in the future.

Or if he got back his UMAT result and it was something like 40%tile?

My favourite question that comes up every year when I'm in the Engineering faculty is 'do I have to do much maths?'

Lolwut. And I thought people wanting to know where eng was while I stood next to a sign that said "Engineering" was bad.
