I'm up to the stage where I need to use digital methods for my presentation piece 1 (I'm making quite flat, kinda 2Dish lights, but they're still 3D, if this makes sense) and I'm stuck on 3D modelling programs that are a) simple to learn and b) have strong support for organic shapes.
I have a strong vector background and my strength is Illustrator CC, but it's proving difficult as so far as 3D goes.
Thanks!

Try autocad programs!

If its flat but 3D you can use the extrude and bevel option in illustrator. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bmxRQdwMoE
