Title: In search of eateries
Post by: MelonBar on August 18, 2014, 08:24:17 pm
As titled I am looking for places I can go at uni (somewhere in the union house) or a nearby place preferably <10 mins away by foot or tram. I'm not fussy but I am on a budget and bigger portions = bigger smiles

I am taking advantage of bhakti yoga curries but sadly they only run once a week.

Cheers

Was that you standing in the fetching costume, holding a sign and waving to passersby today?

Haha it could have been me... We alternate, so every day that you see that costume is probably a different person.

Correct, it is now 7 days per week. And yeah, I'm a delivery driver, but you will see me instore sometimes, and you will also see me waving a sign around Swanston Street / Grattan Street at other times :P

not nearly as cheap but the $8 bento boxes or $7 donburis from Egg Sake Bistro are really really filling, they might deter you from buying more food later on if you can't be bothered going down to Domino's every day?

Egg bistro, that baguette place next to boost (5.50 for a good portion), Tuesday BBQ at North Court.  If you want to venture a bit further away, Cafe Royale on Royal Parade (it can get pretty busy at lunchtime though but the people are really nice and usually give you some free chips if you get a burger :) )

I am very grateful on a daily basis to live on the same planet as Egg Sake Bistro.

7/11 coffees are surprisingly very good, or at least the equivalent of all the coffee on campus I've tried (which is a lot). $1 for a regular and $2 for large. It took in excess of a year to finally buy one, as automatic coffee machines usually scald the milk, and I'm also pretentious. But 7/11 coffees taste the same as any cap or latte you'd receive at Union House, and you'd save a ridiculous amount of money. It's also faster than a barista (although most coffee makers on campus are not baristas).

Admittedly I'm always too lazy to take the 1 minute walk to the 7/11 adjacent to the Sidney Myer Asia Centre.

Nah, the offer got withdrawn. I talked about it in this thread:

That noodle joint next to bubble cup (near foodworks) is hands down the best on campus

Really?! :O

How much is a typical dish? And are the servings generous or are they tiny?

I normally get the Nasi Goreng or the Singapore noodles, which are 7.50 and 8 bucks respectively. They're more than enough for lunch! At the busiest point of the day the wait times can be a bit of a problem, but they do cook everything fresh in front of you whilst you wait.

Haha the singapore noodles are delicious but I can feel my arteries clogging up every time

D': I went to that place once last year and waited three quarters if an hour for my food. Never again!

I miss eastern kitchen for cheap, freshly cooked food!  They were so fast with orders too. :(( does anyone know why it shut down?

I only get food from like three places on campus.
Dax, Zambreros and Haymarket Place.
The other day I got food from Stovetop and it was much regret, as per usual, paying 18 dollars for 4 pieces of gnocchi.
Same with Seven Seeds - lines far too big and food far too small for the price.
Dax is good because usually a meal lasts me two whole meals, especially if a salad - so you pay like 8 dollars for the salad and that's essentially a 4 dollar dinner and a 4 dollar lunch.
Zambreros, get the Chickito or however you spell that for 7.50 and it's only like two bites smaller than the 10.50 burrito.

There's this place on campus that has cheap sandwiches right outside my building which is called 'Tradie cafe' to those who know if it (since every tradie ever eats there) but I've forgotten its real name.  It's like, two steps down from the Doherty on Elizabeth St though.

If it's clogged arteries you're after give the chow kueh teow a shot. Had that for the first time today and am quite convinced that I'll have a heart attack soon.

If you join the sociedad de espaņol and show them your card you get 20% off (or thereabouts) I think, so the chickito ends up costing less than seven bucks.

Zambreros is my default eating place on campus <3

I found your cafe! I was walking along Elizabeth St when someone wolf whistled, and when I looked up I was in front of Top End Cafe, 780 Elizabeth St, surrounded by tradies <3 didn't get his number tho, bruh

I'm never eating there if getting my food involves the potential of being hooted at by tradies.

I never get hooted at by the tradies at top end only the ones on the way to Dax...

They work hard and they play hard, scribble.

Have you tried sensually coating yourself in oil and then sauntering past, simpak?

what the hell is hooting?

The mating call of the wild tradie. Often, the tradie can be seen making its mating call to unprotected women, whilst the tradie itself is in its own pack for protection.

Not all tradies, and you get hooting from uni students just as much if it's after hours.

Now I really want a Top End Cafe sandwich.

See, when it's peers doing it, I'm more inclined to refer to it as "sleazebagging" than "hooting", hahah.
