Title: Night Before and Morning of Exams - What to do
Post by: Tyleralp1 on October 27, 2014, 09:10:42 pm
Hey all,

I've got a question that has always been on my mind right since I could remember, and would like to hear others' opinions:

1. What do you do the night before an exam?
2. What is the advised time to sleep the night before an exam?
3. What is the advised time to wake up before an exam?
4. Assuming it's a morning exam, what do you do in the morning? Light study, practice exam, or kinda chill?

Would love to hear everyone's response and suggestions. I always have no idea what to do haha.

Anyways, good luck to all people who are doing VCE Exams as well as respective school ones :)

1. Light read of notes, watch some TV, chill
2. 9 to 10 I reckon
3. Maybe 7? Depends on how long it takes to get to your school
4. Eat breakfast

1. Cut myself away from any forms of social media and review coursebook from throughout the year before relaxing (maybe having a run outside)
2. About 10pm (depends on when you have to get up)
3. For me I wake up at 5:30am and do some light studying, double check bag for everything and go through routines as normal
4. Eat breakfast, take the bus to school and chat with friends on the bus (not specifically from school) and just lighten up.. coming to school I tend to avoid certain people who will just make me/others more frantic about the exam so I'll just chill with others I guess :P

Do whatever you can to follow through with this advice, whether that be by seeking sanctuary in a toilet or hanging out with others (I'd advise the latter). Last year before my 3/4 exam, some guy nearby went on a rant about how he was rank 1 and implied that everyone else from the cohort was screwed because they didn't complete the same amount of exams as he did. Although it's something little, it was quite annoying and you don't need to cope with that shit before an exam :P

1. Reread notes - maybe get your parents or friends to do some verbal testing, to refine your last minute knowledge of the course (Gives you confidence as well)
2. Try to get a normal nights sleep - Turn technology off early, so going to sleep is easier
3. Wake up 6 o'clock - light jog clear mind, early breakfast, re-read notes slights (maybe a few practice questions just to warm up hands and brain) - basically chill
4. light reread, couple of prac questions

hope this helps

1. Read my notes [or essays if its english]
2. I'm normally in bed by 9.30 - 10 :P But if you sleep at like 12 or something equally crazy, I'd say 10 latest
3. Whatever time you normally get up ? For me, 6.30 for a morning exam, or  8.30 for late morning/afternoon exam
4. Read over notes and chill out

1. I'm not going to say because it is obscene
2. Probably like 10 but I'll go to sleep at ~1-2 due to routine.
3. I'll wake up at maybe 7? Maybe 6;30.
4. I'll go over notes. I don't believe that last minute study isn't useful, it always works for me.

LOL

But like others have said, you should ideally do some light study the night before / the morning of the exam, such as casually flicking through last year's exam, as well as something to help you relax, such as going for a walk or watching TV. The key thing is to keep your brain oxygenated and alive, rather than distressed and dysfunctional.

Regarding the "obscene" act...

I've found that when I've done one night the next day I'm really tired. So it may not be the best course of action for all of you out there.

Hahah I'll get to sleep alright, but next day I feel exactly that - eyes all feel stuffy and so sleepy/tired. Its odd.

Though my usual plan is perhaps to hit up my notes, and go to sleep earlier than usual, so around 10:30. Wake up at 5:45, giving me enough time to quickly skim over my notes.

LOL now that guy, sir, is what is known as a prick.

And EPIC LOL at the "obscene act".

Not just in regard to VCE exams, but I've found that a little bit of excercise is worth it.
Also, good luck in upcoming exams!  ;)

Just on #4, if you think that going over heaps of notes is a bit too much before your exam you might want to make a small (ideally A4 or less) sheet with your common mistakes + those few little things/formulas that you find tricky to remember. The common mistakes thing saved me a precious mark or two before the methods exam last year. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Can we please just acknowledge for a minute that about half of this thread is about masturbating?
Perfect.

It may be an obscene act in your realities, but the opposite is true in mine  ;)

Based on the Freudian theory of the Uncanny, the nature of my reality is seen as unfamiliar which asserts fear into anna.xo, more specifically traumatising her therefore leading to her response of rejecting my reality.  ;)

I read about a guy who committed the "obscene act" before all of his exams. Ended up with a 99 ATAR...  So might be worth a try LOLOL

That's just a verbose expression in saying she doesn't accept your reality, thus choices to repress its existence. But whilst the existence of your reality is negated in Anna's mind, this does not mean your reality is any less real (;)) if you know what I mean.

Spoiler
But seriously, the best thing to do in my humble opinion is to treat it just like any other day. Don't go by things any differently than you would have if it was a standard day when you had to be up by a certain time. (And yes, for my 2pm langauge exam, that meant going to bed quite late.) Anyone telling you you have to do things any differently than you otherwise would probably isn't worth listening to.

would it be good to study / do some quick multiple choice exams (math subject) 24 hours before the actual exam?

Always have a laugh with friends whilst you're waiting for the exam. Get a bit silly, tell a couple of jokes, jump around a bit. Nervousness and excitement are physiologically quite similar, so if you play around a bit you'll trick your brain into believe that it's excited and not nervous. That way, you go into the exam with a smile, and will walk out with one too :)

The night before - some light study. This could be going over the priority points (some of which you still may not be sure about), doing some further practice questions or simply going over key topics.

Obviously I don't recommend staying up too late, but i'd try and fit in at least 7 hours of sleep at the minimum.

On the day, don't do much. I'm personally against any study on the day of an exam. Have a good sleep, a good breakfast and make sure you're energised for the exam. You need to be confident in yourself that you've retained the knowledge that you've learnt throughout the year and apply it when you enter. You will most likely work yourself up if you start studying your notes on the day. This will lead to doubts and worry, and these don't help anyone hours before an exam.

Best of luck all Year 12's (and other students doing 3/4 exams!) :)
