Title: Standard Australian English

Hi all,

I have a query about standards of language. Currently writing an essay on how Standard Australian English is changing and one of the stimulus quotes notes slang (e.g. 'cheerio' isn't used any more). Is our slang considered part of our version of standard English? And one more thing, do I have to refer to 'the Standard' or 'the standard' (capital or not)?

'Cheerio' is not Standard English and slang is a non-standard variety. Standard English is known as the correct form of English that is widely understood, so keep that in mind. You don't need to capitalise 'standard' if it's not followed by 'English'  :)
