I was just sitting on the couch and I realized that I actually wrote half my conclusion for context piece in the exam under the lined bit of the writing booklet...
I heard somewhere that when they scan it, only the writing inside the lined paper are scanned, and I'm devastated :( Would examiners still get the original written booklet or am I screwed?

I don't know anything about vce English yet but traditionally exam companies do not allow you to write underneath the line, although, there could be an exception for VCAA. I don't know why they would need to scan the English response, I would assume that they would just deliver them since it is probably more convenient in which your assessor will see your conclusion. But he or she may ignore it if it breaches vce guidelines. I don't really know but hopefully I helped.,

They scan the entire A4 page, including the area outside that rounded rectangle, but the reason they tell you to write inside is that occasionally the margins can get cut off sometimes, so it's easier to just section off an area that won't be lost.
You won't be penalised in terms of 'oh this kid wrote outside the box. -2 for you.' But it's possible part of your conclusion will be lost which is a pain, but hopefully the bulk of your essay is enough to get you by :)

Thanks for the response.
Is it still possible that the examiner request for the original copy if he/she sees that the conclusion keeps going but didn't get scanned?
Also, for EAL is it still possible to get an 8 or a 9 even with a part of the conclusion cut off?

I'm not sure about this actually. I've never heard of it happening; I doubt they'd be bothered to find/ rescan/ resend a copy just for a few lines. It'll work like an essay written in really messy handwriting, they'll read what's legible, though they might be a little annoyed if some of it doesn't make sense.
You can theoretically still get a 10, but that depends how important your conclusion was. For essays that do all the big-picture 'tying-up loose ends' or bookending then it's probably an issue, but if all you were doing is reaffirming your contention it shouldn't matter too much.
tbh my theory is that the whole page is scanned and can be seen, but there might be a few millimetres lost on any side so they just put a massive border on the page so they're not culpable :P

Some examiners choose to go into the head office and look at the actual papers - let's hope your paper ended up in this pile. :)
