I'm just curious to find out why people started learning. Did your parents make you? Did someone inspire you? You thought it was cool?
Personally I only wanted to learn the flute coz I saw some random chick on tv playing one and thought it was cool (I was 9 ok).
Then I decided to learn the oboe coz my friend played it really well and I thought it couldn't be that hard....oh how naive I was lol.
-
My parents made me. lol
-
I wanted to. Simple!
-
I've always loved music, so when I was 10 I started playing the guitar =)
-
Well, the story is long, complicated and quite personal - but put very short: I had some issues with primary school, and I found playing keyboard was a release for me...so I kept on it. I stopped after Gr. 5, though, as the company that was providing the tuition folded.
Then came Year 7. In my Accelerated Learning class, there was a compulsory band program where I picked up the baritone saxophone. Since moving to MHS, I've picked up even more instruments and the love affair got stronger :)
-
in yr 7 at our school everyone was taught a bit of keyboard i loved it so much i took it up. now im tryin 2 learn bass as well
-
i was forced to learn piano n hated it so i stopped. clarinet... my parents pushed me into band n i was pretty excited n the teacher put me to learn clarinet n i quite like it so its all good ^^
-
i took up violin in '96 after hearing a friend play happy birthday at her own party, then piano in '98 coz i wanted to, and finally the flute in '01...coz i wanted to, lol =D i also played clarinet for half a year, but i sucked
-
I just really wanted to learn piano and started keyboard lessons at school.. I think '96 and then moved to the piano the next year. I think I really wanted to learn because my brother and sister were learning at the time and I used to listen in on their lessons (not their practise since they never did any practise)
Then in my first year at high school I was given a saxophone to play with for the compulsory music and band lessons and loved it
-
one of my parents played so i started at a young age...
-
started learning piano when i was six, in grade 1. did yamaha piano until yr7 - passed my grade 5 AMEB, then decided that i hated practising so i was going to quit.
took up guitar about 15 or so, must've been yr9/10. used to steal my little sister's classical guitar and teach myself to play. within six months i was better than her even though she'd been playing for years, so she cracked it and quit playing guitar ;D my christmas present that year was a proper electric...
and then there i was a couple of years later doing my music performance exam for guitar :) good times.
i still play a fair bit of piano too, just no way near as much as the guitar.
-
started piano a few days before my 5th birthday - was forced by grandparents.
came to Australia - was forced to keep going by parents.
I only started actually enjoying piano in about year 9 when I switched to my current awesome teacher :P
as for oboe I randomly decided to start learning it in year 6 or something but I quit cos it was boring and cos I almost failed grade 6 :P
-
Piano aged 5-13 cos we had one and my Dad is a keen musician [his Mum was a piano teacher.]
Guitar 13- now intermittently.
French Horn for year in yr 8. I'm ashamed to say I gave it up because it was considered "uncool". It was probably my best instrument as well; I [so I'm told] made a sound on a tuba when I was 2.
Maybe ......... Zither :-\
-
omg i loveee oboe.. sigghh how bad is the essay bit for mpf.. what a pain!
-
Oboe sounds preeeettttyyyy.....except when I play it lol.
Need to practice more.
-
I started playing the guitar out of self-interest. My sister was playing the flute and my brother was playing the piano. Each night one of my parents would go to them and listen and help them practice their instrument. I wanted time with them so I decided that by playing an instrument would make them sit with me and spend the evening with me.
What a horrible child I was.
-
I started playing the guitar too! In grade 5, when I was 10... Lol... I guess I started because I heard 3am by Matchbox 20 solely on guitar, and thought it was absolutely beautiful, hence I decided to give it a go. I never got up to that level though, I always seemed to play mediocre. :P I am still trying though, I want to play that song at valedictory night. :)

And you failed at it, and so I stole your guitar and became better at it than you pretty damn quickly.
Tsk tsk.
-
Hahaaha I started learning cello cos of Yo-yo Ma, and also in the fact you can sit down XD!
-
been playing flute since the start of year 7 and chose to do it myself :P
but I think im going on hiatus since I've just passed my grade 6 AMEB and I dont think I'll be bothered investing time in playing next year
-
My parents made me start learning piano when I was 4...I got bored and stopped taking lessons when I was 11, started learning guitar instead. I learnt cello for 2 years in primary school, because there was a free introductory program where you got 2 years of lessons, but only on certain instruments. I got bored and quit cello.
In hindsight, I wish I could still play cello.
-
Back in year 6 i also learned french horn, apparently it was good for music scholarships, but I never practiced because it was boring and I never learned how to breath properly
I think it's so important to be able to play more than one note at a time and create harmonies. Piano's the best at that, and ever since I stopped taking lessons and started playing what I like I've enjoyed it a lot more. Still, I kinda view the piano as a solitary instrument, and a passionate yet abstract one, a bit like a Kubrick film.
In contrast the sound of a guitar is much more raw and unbridled, and it's a lot of fun to play. Yin and Yang I guess :P
-
Guitar.
To get laid.
-
The electric guitar is an amazingly versatile instrument; perhaps second only to a keyboard/synth.
The HUGE range of sounds you can produce make it so enjoyable.
I started playing guitar because i enjoyed music with guitar in it.
And srsly, chix luv it.
-
Year 10, friend brought a guitar for my birthday which then led me to teach myself to play and now I absolutely love it!
-
Still, I kinda view the piano as a solitary instrument
Yeah, the only thing I miss about oboe is being able to play with a big orchestra... well you can still do that with piano I guess but it's much harder

Similar story, 'cept it was always my parents that forced me and I never enjoyed it. :P
-
for piano i started out of my own curiosity lost interest in it after a year but thankfully my parents pushed me and then as i started to get better it grew on me. sucks that i stopped cos of vce though. annnd guitar self taught :)
-
Started learning piano in grade 2, only because my older sister did as well.
When she quit a few years later, so did I.
Thankfully by the time she picked it up again, I had finally gained enough independence not to follow. I can't say I particularly liked it in the first place :)
-
I mainly play the piano.
I start when I was 3, I was self taught, and just played music that I listened to. I loved playing classical, romantic and rock pieces. My parents then made me go to lessons when I was 5, and that love eventually turned to hatred. I was finally able to quit when I finished grade 8 at the age of 13 (AMEB.. it was the best feeling walking out of that building and never looking back).
I still played piano at school at that time, but I still loathed it.
I learned how to play jazz and blues pieces during that time
When I was 12, I taught myself how to play violin and flute. I wanted to play these instruments because sounded like such beautiful and delicate instruments, even though were hard to master.
Two years ago, I picked up an acoustic guitar. It's just so nice to play something simple and have it sounding amazing.
Two weeks ago I picked up the bass. It's fun, and it's something I've always wanted to do :)
It's actually quite fun.
Nowadays, I'm writing and playing piano. I'm starting to play the difficult pieces again, and I love it.
Whoops, I ranted. Sorry D:
-
Started piano when I was in prep (my choice), gave it away a few years ago after finishing AMEB grade 6. Still play for fun sometimes at home. :)
-
I started learning trumpet at age 4 because a family friend gave me a trumpet. Then I listened to James Morrison and fell in love with my instrument!
-
I've always had a piano in my house... my mum used to play (well, still can) and my brother who is 3 years older than me had already taken up lessons when I was probably around 5 (but he's now playing guitar like a cool kid). I learned how to read music before officially starting piano lessons but as soon as I started doing exams... it became more of a chore rather than fun. I never did well in the exams (never got an A) and when I finally stopped doing exams 2 years ago, I got my worse score ever for grade 6. (C)
However... I don't regret learning piano... I still play now, but now I go with modern songs rather than classical...
-
Began the piano when I was 5 (parents influence), but grew to love it... :)
Started the cello in year 7 because I really wanted to play in my school orchestra.
-
In kinder, we were visited by a travelling orchestra and I fell in love with the violin and I would go around all day with two pencils held as a violin and bow and pretend to be playing. I kept begging my parents for lessons, until they finally gave in the following year when I was in pre-prep. Saw people at school playing piano, so asked my parents if I could learn too in year 1. In year 3, I decided that the clarinet was pretty cool after hearing a girl play it in a concert at school. In year five, my favourite character was lisa simpson, and since she played the saxophone, I just HAD to learn (pretty lame reason I know LOL) and then in year six, I fell in love with the oboe after hearing everyone tune to it in orchestra. Still play all of them, except the oboe, which I realised I was screwing up my clarinet and saxophone embouchures.
-
My mum taught me piano but I was always lazy and wasn't really playing it for myself. That is, until I met my cousins. I was awestruck and inspired when he casually pulled out pieces like Arabesque 1 by Debussy and Chopin's Waltz Op. posth, E minor. And so my love for music began then and it's been constantly growing.
In Year 7, I accidentally got myself into learning violin. In the compulsory band program, I wanted to play violin but only violas remained on the shelves. After telling the teacher I wanted to learn violin instead, he misinterpreted that as wanting to take private lessons. I recently switched to viola last year, mainly because I wanted to get into orchestra. Yes, a switch with an agenda :O
But I prefer the timbre of the viola and always regret not learning the cello instead. (Saw a video of Handel's Impossible Duet on youtube of a cellist squeezing a violin between his legs and filming himself twice :D ) :'(

For all those who love cello and classical music, you'll really appreciate this:

Have you heard of the passacaglia in G minor for violin and viola?
-
Piano - parents made me because it was the archetypal Asian thing to do so I took private lessons.
Violin - it was also the Asian thing to do and had the opportunity at school, stopped in year 10 though.
Guitar - got really into heavy metal music during my angsty days so I started off with self-taught acoustic before moving onto electric but gave up when VCE started due to lack of patience.
Right now, I have nothing to show for except for bits of Fur Elise and some waltz on piano and lame Green Day chords. Still not giving up on guitar though. :)

That's the official name of the "Impossible Duet" :) I just happened to listen to a version with a cello and a violin. Have you learnt it?

Nope, because I play neither cello nor violin... not azn enough :P
What about for viola? Or any other big works for the piano?

Started piano in prep, so that's, what, 1999?
Parents more or less encouraged me and I liked it.. then a few years later started doing grades and then I stopped liking it. Around grade 4 or 5 I loved it and so continued to grade 8 which I finish in 2010.
In year 7, so.. 2006, I took up percussion & drumkit at school coz my older brother played it. Been doing that ever since, plus continuing with piano here and there.
So when it came down to choosing whether to do piano or percussion for VCE music, I made the choice based on how many virtuosos/how tough the competition was out there! :P

This is quite a common story, the exams taking out all the fun of playing!
Ive found that those who've had a classical training are much quicker at picking up a new piece of work regardless of difficulty or style and are much more adaptable...... BUTTTTT probably the most horrendous thing is hearing someone trained in entirely classical to attempt jazz... that is far from music to our ears! They just don't seem to have the 'touch' nor the 'feel'.........so having a keen interest in playing different styles of music is imperative and comes out in your playing! Having the knack can't be taught.
-
piano at age 3 coz my mum was a piano teacher at beijing music conservatory and wanted me to be a concert pianist.
but then 15 years later, I discovered mathematics.

-
asian parents... what'd u expect :P lol
-
hahahhaha ok, fair enough!
-
All of you guys are crazy.
The furthest instrument I've ever played was some triangle and stick which goes like *ding dong* each time I tap it with the stick and triangle.
Dem kindergarten days were legendary.
-
abd123, welcome to percussion XD
-
Started violin at 3 (Suzuki method FTW); I think my parents wanted me to have a nice hobby.
I played in eisteddfods regularly in primary school, played in local orchestra..
Still enjoy playing casually :)
-
i sing...dunno if thats counted as a musical instrument LOL. but this yr i want to pick up something new, my choices are flute, clarinet and saxaphone, which do you guys recommend?

Just thought I'd let you know, flute is awesome ;D.
Our school has a mandatory 1 year instrument programme. II chose the flute (because it was the only one small enough to fit into my school bag) and I've never regretted it since.
-
blank i will personally avenge your death if you don't choose saxophone! hahah nah seriously, it is one of those instruments that instantly puts you in a relaxed, blissful mood.. be sure to check you out at some gigs coming up in no time :P
-
My dad took organ when he was younger, so when I was young he made me take electone. Switched to piano when I was 9. And then when I was 11, my school started violin classes, so I picked up violin then. Continued with the orchestra in secondary school.
I'm still playing both instruments. =) I think I want to pick up clarinet when I grow older....the timbre is just so fascinating! :D
-
Cause parents said so. They want me to do violin, but violin places already filled. So they said, take up flute. Good choice, grade 5 flute now. I still play it.
-
I wanted to learn piano because my mum bought me a mini piano (40 cm in length) and I didnt know how to play any nursery rhymes. I wanted to learn how to play 'Twinkle Twinkle little star' (I was only 6 years old) the most, so my mum organised piano lessons.
The first day of the music lesson (i didnt know big pianos existed) so I carried my 40cm in length piano with me to school, for the piano lesson. My piano teacher laughed and said I could have a go at the big piano then.
Since then I have never looked back. Finish 3/4 Music Solo Performance last year:)
-
violin: prep until about year 9 when I started to fail maths.
-
I want to learn the keyboard!!!
-
started the flute in year 7 since I enjoyed learning the recorder in grade 3~4 and thought that the flute had a pretty sound
stopped playing after finishing 6th grade/when year 12 began :(

Can I just say that that is possibly the most cute story I've ever heard in my life. Good luck with music solo performance.

i had always wanted to learn piano but my parents wouldnt let me take lessons. in like grade 5 or something my parents bought me the $5 keyboard u buy at aldi and i started playing the songs that came with the keyboard. then i started playing other songs i found the sheet music to (only the melody/right hand part) and my parents were then convinced that i liked piano. at the end of grade 6, when my sister started taking singing lessons, i asked my parents if i could take piano lessons. they agreed ;D i continued the lessons until start of year 9 when i got busier and had no time to have lessons. i still play at home but i have not improved ever since i quit. :( i plan to go back to lessons once i start uni :)
