Title: VCE English Language Holiday Checklist!
Post by: dmitridr on December 10, 2014, 03:37:27 pm
The holidays present a fantastic time to not only have a much needed break, but also to prepare yourself thoroughly for the following year! Obviously, you should take a break, have fun and catch up with your friends, but you should also look at incorporating some VCE English Language study into your holiday schedule. In this post, I will recommend some ways for you to study over the holidays without totally interrupting your break!

Note: In the holidays, the aim is merely to expose yourself to and familiarise yourself with the key features, terms and structure of VCE English Language, rather than completing actual responses (you’ll learn that in class!).

The ‘Green Book’

Firstly, I’d advise reading Kirsten Fox’s English Language Exam Guide (otherwise known as ‘The Green Book’), and in doing so I’d recommend you study the sample responses they provide to you for section A, B and C. To refresh if you don’t know, section A is short answer, section B is the analytical commentary and section C is the essay.

When observing and analysing the sample responses in the green book, look at:

The key metalinguistic terms used often
The structure of the content (note: a structure is always followed every time)
Any noticeable examples or quotations (highlight these!)
The sentence structures and the lexical choice (i.e. how the sentences flow on from each other)

Metalanguage

Secondly, you should also read over all the metalinguistic terms. See my other post here on the importance of metalanguage. Throughout the year, you should begin to familiarise yourself with all of the metalanguage in order to precisely describes features of the English language but also to score a higher mark!

Quotations and Examples

Lastly, I’d also recommend you keep your eyes peeled for relevant and modern quotes and examples that you can use in your essay. This will form the basis of your quotations list for the end of year exam, but also for your in-class SACs. With these quotes, I’d begin to compile a quotations list in which you will add examples and quotes throughout the year. So don’t worry if it isn’t complete by the end of the holidays – so long as you have begun it, then you’re already halfway there! In my next post, I’ll provide a list of places to source your quotes!

I do hope this helped you in your quest to become an excellent English Language student, and if you do have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below!

Thanks for this quick and brief guide that I can follow over the holidays,
I was just wondering are there any other resources like 'The Green Book' which I might be able to access for free?

Thanks in advanced!
