Hi guys, I'm Thushan and I will be giving headstart lectures for the above three subjects. I'm compiling the notes right now and I've got some ideas to try and make the lecture as interactive as possible. The ideas I have are here -
1 - In every topic I have a small problem (simple, but you will need to think) that I would like you guys to solve together in small groups, to try and use what you have just learnt. I would like to get a group to the front to present their solution to the lecture theatre as well. :)
2 - I would like to ask the audience questions, but in my experience (as a student and as a lecturer) I notice that the students are quite hesitant to answer the questions. To those who feel shy about embarrassing themselves, I want to say this:
I really want you guys to learn, I want you guys to get the most out of this lecture. And the best way to learn as much as you can is to interact, to ask questions, to answer my questions. Please, please don't be shy. I LOVE it when students have a go, I don't give a damn if they get it wrong, it's just an opportunity for me to teach them something new. You are allowed to make mistakes, you are supposed to make mistakes. If you are worried about what the other students might be thinking, please try not to worry. Many others may have the same question as you do, and I will stress this point during the lecture that it is OK to make a mistake and those who have a go should be commended for doing so!
Is there anything else in particular you would like me to do?

Do you know whether or not they're holding a second methods lecture group?? By the time I got the notification email, methods had been booked out. :(

No one will know until we get in contact with UniMelb in the New Year, unfortunately! We'll be trying our best though.

Oh. Thank you for clarifying. I'll keep my fingers crossed then. :)

So I received the email about the upcoming Specialist lecture, and it stated that notes will be available for purchase ($15).
I'm just wondering, will these notes be covering the entire course or only that which we will be covering in the lecture?

Spec is 100 pages covering the whole course; so anything that may be glossed over for time restrictions etc will be covered in the notes :).

(no idea where to post this)
Have all of the places for the AN lectures been taken?

Sweet. I'm assuming the same goes with all the other subjects?

Chem will cover all of unit 3 - I've finished writing AOS1 notes, and it's about 40 pages so far. I predict about 60-80 pages in total.
Bio will also cover unit 3 - AOS 1 is done and is also 40 pages. I'm predicting again, 60-80 pages in total.

Spec, Methods and English are all areas of study because we thought divising them into Units could get a bit strange, and all of the others are just Unit 3 (but all of it, obviously).

Not quite. There are places left for Spec, Business, Health, and I (think?) Physics. We're working with UoM to find a solution - hopefully bigger rooms on the same day, but we can't make any promises. We really are trying to cater to everyone on the waitlist though.
-
Are their notes for physics as well? Cus I didn't get an email yet

Yep, Physics looks like being 80 pages or so. (Alwin's a gun). We sent the Spec email out yesterday because it's on the 12th. (We hadn't done it sooner because we were trying to find ways to make them free, but it's just not possible without going into debt). There are notes for all subjects though, and they're all amazing.

I'm assuming there is a cost for the physics notes?

I've just finished writing Chem. 85 pages worth of notes covering Unit 3, and a 6 question problem set that I'm going to get students to do individually or in groups.

I'm assuming there is a cost for the physics notes?
Yep; notes will be $20 (potentially less if we get a cheaper quote for the printer?).
-
Is there a fee for all lecture notes ?

Yep =].

The reason we are paying for these notes is supposedly for the printing costs which is fair enough.
Is it possible however that an electronic copy of the notes could be put on ATARNotes so that we can still have access to them if we missed a lecture?

Printing costs among other things :)
Re: electronic copies, it hasn't yet been discussed :). We've had a lot to focus on, so we've prioritised our efforts into the vital stuff and deferred thinking about non-vital stuff until the days after the lecture series :)

So who's here

Awesome work on the Biology lecture Thushan!
Whilst it did go by pretty quickly, I'm sure everybody learnt something from the lecture and got a good laugh from your analogies too (like the paedophilia one LOL :')
Quick question: Will there be answers posted for the Problem Set you made us complete at the lecture (since we did skip the last two)...
