Title: What is Japanese Detailed Study?
Post by: leonc12 on January 01, 2015, 09:51:43 pm
I read somewhere on the net that I should be starting my Detailed Study right now. I'd like to, but I don't know that much about Detailed Study for Japanese SL Unit 3 and 4.
Do you just pick any topic you want then write a script for it and read it out in front of your teacher? Does the teacher ask you questions about your topic? If so, what type of questions will teacher give you?
Sorry, I don't really know anything about Japanese SL Detailed Study, so if someone could please explain to me what it is, then that would be great! Thanks.

So basically at around October there is an oral exam comprising of General Conversation and Discussion, which lasts for about 15 minutes (this is examined by 2 examiners, not your teacher).

The Discussion component is the part where you talk about your Detailed Study. To prepare for this, you will have:
1. Chosen your topic (which I'm pretty sure can be anything).
2. Research your topic using a variety of texts such as books/the Internet/newspapers/ etc.
3. Then prepare your speech (however, you can't use any notes except for diagrams and photos during the exam)
4. The examiners will ask you a variety of questions relating to your Detailed Study after you give a 1 min intro about it. Since I'm doing Dialects for my Detailed Study they can ask me questions relating to the history of it/advantages/disadvantages of learning a dialect etc.

Hopefully this made some sense lol. I suggest you look up the study design for Japanese SL if you want further clarification.

I'm pretty sure the topic of your Detailed Topic is your choice, but I've heard that some teachers pick the sub-topic (or overall topic) for you. And no you will not have a script, you are expected to have a thorough understanding of your topic and be able to communicate it to your teacher/examiners in a discussion. It normally starts off with generic questions and then they'll throw some deeper questions at you to test your knowledge, or if they suspect you're regurgitating rehearsed responses. For example my detailed topic was a Japanese idol group called AKB48 and the first thing they asked me was stuff like "who are they?", "why do you like them?" etc.

Thank you both for you detailed answers! I'll get started on it ASAP.

I'd recommend choosing a topic and doing some basic research in English.

A general outline of a detailed study:

Introduction
Definition
Development/History
Benefits/Advantages
Comparison with Australia (if possible)
Problems
Solutions/Suggested Solutions
Future Prospects/Your Opinion

Is how I did it :)
