Hey guys, I'm a bit confused as to how many subjects to choose for first year BSc.
Right now I'm on the enrolment page, and this is how it looks:

I don't know what breadth subject(s) to take yet.. all I know for sure is that I'll be doing 4 science + 0 breadth in 1st semester, and then 3 science + 1 breadth second sem.
Am i on the right track?
Also, the part where it says: Science and/or Breadth subjects (25 credit points remaining), what would I even put for that?

I'm unsure why you're completing Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 in semester 1, didn't think this was allowed. Have you completed Specialist Mathematics and if so, what study score?
Overall you most likely want to be doing 4 subjects a semester, so that is correct. The Science/Breadth is because the amount of breadth you take isn't fixed, you could choose to do more breadth or more science. Generally as long as the subject is on your study plan, it's location isn't too important.

sorry, that was an accident haha. Calculus 2 is supposed to be in second sem.

Why are you taking physics fundamentals if you're not going to do second semester physics? Seems like a waste to me/a good way to eat up a potential science unit when you could've done a breadth.

I didn't do physics in year 12, so i was told to do physics fundamentals for 1 semester to have some knowledge of the physics questions asked on the GAMSAT. What do you reckon i should do? should i just self learn? i've even read that fundamentals is shit

I obviously don't have experience at UoM - but I've heard that fundamental/foundation/non-Y12 physics units are just crap wherever you go, and everywhere I've seen it people have said that self-learning is the way to go.
May as well chuck a breadth in there, save that science unit for third year when you have more choices. Just self-learn physics via Khan Academy/vTextbook/whatever for the GAMSAT.

Tbqh, I was more motivated self-learning, when I could take things at my own pace, than when I actually took the foundation physics unit at Monash, when I had to learn things by their time whether I liked it or not. Your choice at the end of the day, though - no one knows you better than you do. I'm just saying what I, personally, would do in your situation. :P

What did you self learn for? As in, what was your goal?
Also, did you have like a structured timetable where you would aim to complete/learn a topic within a certain period of time, and complete questions for it as well?
I've downloaded a book called Physics for Dummies and it looks pretty cool hahah

I self-learned for the sake of learning. I found physics interesting, and wanted to know more about it.
When I self-learned, no. I'd just look things up and learned. When I was in the unit, yes, but it didn't help much, still walked out with a 69 and a fist-full of regrets.

Physics Fundamentals= Self-learning physics
A major advantage of learning physics outside of uni is that your GPA isn't at risk of being compromised.

If you have a friend taking the subject, just take the lecture notes off of them to get an idea of the topics covered so you can study them on your own in preparation for the gamsat if need be.

I took Fundamentals and then GAMSAT as well and seriously like, Fundamentals covers nothing. It is not worth it even for the notes. And I had to run through it all again with the textbook before taking the GAMSAT anyway because by the time I got to third year and decided to do the GAMSAT it was long pushed out of my brain.
In terms of self learning, I would just sit down and write my own notes from the textbook (College Physics or whatever it was called, you can borrow that from the library if you want to, or if you really want it I'm pretty sure I still have my copy and I would give it to anyone who wants it free of charge because it's not at all useful to me anymore) and then do some of the questions from the book to help consolidate. I also had some questions and materials from that Des O Neill prep course so I used that list of stuff to guide my study and then did some of their questions too.
Highly recommend self learning, although I am quite a disciplined studier. Discipline in work is a skill you'll have to build no matter what you do, though. It's tempting to slack off from study when you have no frequent testing and tutorial worksheets etc but you should just remind yourself of why you're doing this/the end goal for you and then use that to motivate you.
