Title: Doing a language

First year student here, hoping to do a dbl major in finance and economics, and was just wondering if doing a language is advisable? Chinese 1 to be exact, i have some background knowledge but its not proficient to a point where i can speak it comfortably (just know the pure basics). If anyone can relay some experience regarding a learning language i'd greatly appreciate it.
I just want to know whether it's worth doing it, or whether i should leave it as 1-time semester thing and never touch it again. Sorry for all the questions but one last thing, can fluent speakers enrol in basic chinese units?

Proficient Chinese speakers aren't allowed in basic units such as Chinese 1 and 2, I hear the coordinators do really thorough checks with your last name and background and all. You'll be placed with other people who are learning Chinese with no prior knowledge, if you go with Chinese 1.
