Title: Unit 3 and 4 Rankings
Post by: Tyleralp1 on March 03, 2015, 05:36:44 pm
I'm currently aware that marks for Unit 3 and 4 are separate. However, when rankings are submitted to VCAA, is this overall ranking or each individual Unit ranking? That too, is the overall score averaged, or the score for each unit given as well?

That too, if the top 5 or so in a cohort are within a few marks/percentages within each other by end of year, is ranking entirely important if one who's not 1 kills the exam (higher mark than rank 1) ?

Our teacher explained it as rank 1's sacs get scaled to the same exam score as the highest scoring exam from your cohort, regardless of who wrote it. This also happens for the bottom and median, and then the rest are averaged. So ranking is not extremely important in a tight cohort, because most likely all your sacs will get scaled to around the same score as each other

Each Graded Assessment for Unit 3 and 4 (SACs) is submitted separately and graded separately. So since ranking is determined by your SAC Score, there will be two different rankings. Someone might be rank 1 for unit 3 but rank 5 in unit 4 - it isn't averaged out. Then when VCAA scales your SAC scores, it is done for the units individually as well - your Unit 3 could scale up while your Unit 4 scales down in weird situations.

For the second part of your question, it's really hard to tell. You'd expect the people closely bunched up to perform similarly in the exam, but honestly the specifics of the scaling system are unknown, VCAA keeps it under the wraps.

Thanks for both the replies! :)

Daymm, with each unit being separate, I now only have one more SAC in Physics (there are only two in Unit 3), for which to play a 5% catch up in Unit 3 after a "poor" first sac performance. That too, the next one is a lesser weighting than the first..uh oh :/

What about for subjects such as Maths where unit 3 and unit four both go under GA1?
