What rank do I need to end up being in my year level to achieve myself an above 40 study score?

It depends entirely on the cohort. But the golden rule has always been to attain rank 1 in order to protect yourself from a poor-performing cohort.

e.g. Student A and B are rank 5 in their cohort, respectively. Student A's cohort dominates the exam. Student B's cohort struggles. If both students get the same mark on the exam, then Student A will have their SACs boosted up whereas Student B will suffer from SAC moderation.

However any VCE graduate will tell you that your exam performance is the overwhelming influence in regard to your study score. If you can crush the exam and your rank is decent enough, you will score over 40.
