Title: New Website!
Post by: brenden on July 23, 2015, 09:14:47 pm
Hey everyone!

A new website is finally here! It obviously looks much different (hopefully much nicer - I think so at least), and you can see a few changes. Although, right now, we're having some teething issues, and it's not loading for me sometimes - hopefully fixed within the next half an hour!

Basically, this website is:

<please work>

Hi Ned Nerb

Awesome new design, looks very modern xD
Is there a way we can still view 'recent unread topic'?

Looks so modern!

Although ironically the colour scheme takes us back to 2008 :P http://web.archive.org/web/20080430220911/http://www.vcenotes.com/

I'm conflicted, but intrigued.

Actually, scratch that, I really like the new layout other than the persistent header as you scroll. 5/5 pretty good.

*sigh* Currently no navigation to it. Definitely my fault. --- we'll either put it in the forum dropdown, or in the homepage, perhaps next to "latest discussion" as a tab. Don't stress though, we'll definitely add something: this is also the way that I use the forums.

Thank god! I scrolled through my history to bookmark it haha
In terms of the new layout, it looks much cleaner but there's still some getting used to. I find the whitish background causes the blue to really pop out but that might be because I'm on AN in the dark. Definitely love the shade of blue though. Well done!

What do other people think about the persistent header? Seriously -- give us feedback and we will make live changes based on what you say (so long as we're getting extensive feedback about certain things. Personally I think it's good for navigation, but please let us know all your feedback.

We will definitely be added the 'unread post' thing, and other things you point out. Dead set serious, shit will get done based on what you say.

I WANT FIVE UNICORNS AND A HORSE WITH A HORN ON ITS HEAD. Don't even think about giving me six unicorns.

Srs tho, looks so good on my phone (people, try it out!!). But, I agree that the header bit might just be too big if it's going to keep scrolling with us.

Yeah the header is a bit annoying, otherwise it looks slick

Is it because of the size as mentioned by Euler, or in general, just sticking with you is annoying af?

Also: in the forum dropdown, "unread posts" :)

ya i agree with the above that i dont like the heading following you down as you scroll, it makes the site feel less forum-y

This is the second error I've seen (refreshed the first error when posting before I could copy the error code thing). This error was when I tried loading the unread posts page:
Unknown storage engine 'InnoDB'

Also I feel the header is too big for my liking. Would be better if it was thinner. Forgot to mention that I love the new quote box thing

EDIT: Got the first error when I tried posting this. Funnily enough it still posts but a refresh is needed and it takes me back to the reply page with what I've typed still inside.
Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required '/home/atarnotes/global/scripts/conf.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/insm/public_html/forum/Sources/Post.php on line 1930

EDIT 2: Would like to mention on the mobile site (and when the window is compressed) where the header compresses into one icon, unread posts don't appear under forums

Hopefully faster will actually happen! It's always been painfully slow.

I miss the unread and updated buttons, its way harder to find new content and make new posts otherwise. This seems to be in the works though.

I dont like the persistent header at all. I get it makes business sense to kind of constantly push the other bits of the site but just like banner ads on website, people will learn to ignore it eventually (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banner_blindness). Since people will ignore even after the first few times, i dont really particularly like the fact it steals the 20% of my entire screen space and cuts things off.

I realise in almost any IT project, any change will bring dislike from the users. Right now i dont like the new colour scheme, its kinda harder to demarcate signatures and the different boards. That said, i'm getting used to it slowly already so thats maybe not so bad.

Finally, next time there is a major disruption advanced notice would be good. For a major website to unexpectedly black out for an entire week is kind of unprofessional and has the potential to damage the user base. Imagine if facebook, reddit or the commonwealth bank went dark for a week with no explanation. I understand it was perhaps mentioned on facebook but not everyone uses that and it apparently made it sound like it was only for a few hours. Of course, it's kind of the low point of the study season (as low as you can get) but still.

The rest of the other new features sounds good!!

Adding onto Slothpomba's suggestion:
I reckon in regards to the header could have an "auto-hide" feature (similar to the taskbar on Windows).

Overall, it's a really slick design though the colour scheme is pretty "bright" I have to say xD

It was actually scheduled maintenance for a few hours that turned into longer when things went to shit :P
We definitely didn't intend for it to be down for so long, which is why there was no advanced notice.

Sounds like the header is copping a bad wrap. It's actually not for business, but for navigability (so you don't have to scroll the whole way up to start navigating again), but it looks like it's just annoying, so it will probably go (at least judging by the theme of the feedback that's come in so far).

Faster will definitely happen --- once this annoying server bug thing goes away, it will be quite fast. It's actually been faster since the site went down a week ago (server change), but not as noticeable if it wasn't pointed out.

When you say "updated" buttons - do you just mean replies to threads you've posted in?

Adding onto Slothpomba's suggestion:

Auto-hide sounds pretty cool. I'll definitely raise the idea!

So it has. Unintentional... It was intended to stay (you'll know I'm an old-time freak user of the chat ;) ), but not sure where the icon went. Was definitely on the test site. Thanks for posting!

Nice!

Also, I'm not too sure if you want this in public eyes but on the homepage under "Latest Discussions", you can see threads being posted in which are closed off (E.g Re: Veteran mods / new natmods) so that may want to be changed in case guests stumble across it and think the site is "faulty" if they can't access certain boards which are off-limits to them :P

The site looks good - a lot more modern and flat, and almost has a Windows Phone feel to it. Just noticed some things animate also which is pretty cool.

Just a few points:
- I really liked having links bold when they were unread. That was the way I used to find unread posts in specific areas.
- Is there a way to expand and contract certain forum sections (such as Announcements or National Education) on the main page?  There used to be a little "-" button but I think that's gone.
- Nitpicky stuff: I feel like the padding between certain elements is a bit small. Like the whole site has been squished together a lot. The transition (vertical padding) between someone's post to their signature is good, but then from their signature to the next post feels a little cramped. Also, there's slight inconsistency in the fonts - but those are just minor things and I'm being picky.

Edit: Did get an error posting this but I think that's been mentioned. Other than that it's all good!

This is a design issue more than anything.. seems that the height between some posts is a bit short. If you look to the left of the posts the two posts included in the screenshot are REAALLY close to each other.

Probably not of the highest priority but definitely something to look at in due course. Other than that, I quite like it!

On the bold thing - could you elaborate? I can't remember what you're referring to about the old site compared to the new site.

Expanding thing: will fix.

Nitpicky stuff: Just noticed the padding issue after sloth's post. Added to the bug doc!

I'm seeing PHP errors on the home page:

Also the blue header on forum posts seems to be animated, it starts very tall and animates smaller.  :o

Would you ever consider having an online "chat" feature whether it be 1 on 1 or a group chat? I guess that devalues the forum kind of feel but communication would be faster.

Just a thought :)

A chat feature already exists, we have an IRC channel, #atarnotes (and #vce) on FreeNode :). You can use https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/atarnotes if you don't have an IRC program installed. There's also the page at http://www.atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?action=chat that I set up back when I worked on ATAR Notes (many years ago) but KiwiIRC is better.

I can't download attachments? Checked a few threads that I could remember being able to get them before and got '404 - Attachment Not Found'
Link 1
Link 2

Probably also worth noting that these are from before the website update (I think, I was asleep when it happened  ::))

Edit:
Been having a more thorough look through, and here's some more things:
Some major formatting on the 'Look and Layout' page
Aside from the checkbox issue, I'm not sure if the 'Change Profile' button is meant to be aligned to the right or not, but it looks a little odd imo.

Formatting: Scroll bar on the member list for no reason?
Not sure about this one, but it's consistent across multiple resolutions and doesn't actually seem to do anything. Not that anyone would go the the member list on an average day (Right??), but... y'know.

Maybe a little nit picky, but I think the header is a little off still. I like it, but it's a bit too thick and I think being able to hide it would probably be a nice addition. Edit: For example, the youtube one is around half the size of AN's.

And, as much as I love the smileys and other icons - they don't really match the new look either. Most jarringly is probably the respect voters one where none of the colours really match the blue-white thing you've got going (and it's really low res). Not sure how fixable that is since (I think) they're powered by the simplemachines engine but it'd be super cool anyway

Probably more complaints feedback coming later, but I gotta fly, yo  8)

Overall, when I get used to it, I think I'll like it for sure :)  My favourite thing so far: I click something else/the browser back button by mistake or there's a refresh AND THE CONTENT IN MY POST REMAINS WHEN I GO BACK TO IT! :)) :)) :))

Disclaimers: a. I know less than nothing about web design.  b. Either ignore or put off my comments, very nitpicky.

Spoiler
> Attached is a pre-site-change screenshot which shows the 'bolded' stuff Zealous mentioned.
PLOT TWIST! not attached - An Error Has Occurred!
The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.

Basically if a board/subforum contained an unread post, the name of the board (e.g. English Studies) used to be bolded so it was easy to see.  Not that it always worked correctly.

> We're missing the archived subforum (public recycle bin, previous years' exam and results discussion, other junk)

> Spacing between topics on a board is uneven (e.g. see English Work Submission and Marking).  There's a nice-sized gap above the topic name, but a bigger (too big) gap below the topic name.  I'd trim a couple of mm off the bottom of each topic.  I think the issue is actually that the 'last post' column sometimes stretches over three lines because the date's a bit long, maybe just making that column a little wider as it used to be could solve this.

> in a quote, bolded text doesn't show up very strongly anymore - not something most will care about, but when answers questions/marks essays bolded within a quote, it no longer stands out much. cf. Re: Language Analysis Feedback please- SAC soon

> the logout button doesn't quite line up with the others :'(

> until you actually click on a note (quite a mess there), I LOVE the Notes section!

> because everything else has grown, little buttons at the top (e.g. 'reply', 'new topic', 'print') have proportionally shrunk - and I think it's important to have bigger 'reply'/'new topic' buttons at least

> the symbols in the far left column of a board (which I've always thought should never exist anyway) have grown so much that they look fuzzy and out-of-focus, especially compared to the crisp column of symbols to the right of it (which I've always thought shouldn't exist either).

> custom titles overdone a little (huge blue box with huge capitalised text)

> in some situations there's no gap between the black bar at the bottom and the last thing on the page - e.g. see the bottom of a random profile, there's no gap between the 'add comment' and black.  I've found some other examples too.

So uh, while you're taking demands, is there any chance we could see more than the first 5 alphabetically ordered upvoters on a particular post?
Yeah, you have an 'a' name and I have a 'b' name, if we can't get away with the sneaky unseen downvote why should everyone else be able to?!?

+1 for silverpixeli's suggestion, had planned to say so too :) Pretty much, how the PMs look seems perfect to me, they alternate in colour and have a small white gap between each.

Actually, on notes, The whole HSC part seems to not work at all...

The notes aren't there in the first place, and when I try to organise by subject, it gives me a list of VCE subjects, not HSC subjects.

Great pick-up. A note on how we'll do changes: We'll do bugs first, like the Notes screw-up, and then later on we'll make aesthetic changes, so the aesthetic changes won't be as immediate. Don't think we're ignoring them! I have two separate documents, one for bugs, one for general changes, and they've each got their respective priority, so you'll see bug fixes today and over the coming days, and later on, aesthetic changes.

Edits:
> dot-points/lists don't work
I'm personally very upset about the dot-points. Completely ruined my OP formatting. Noted!

BLok, take my word that I've read and explored all points of your feedback and noted things hahaha :)

Actually, on notes, The whole HSC part seems to not work at all...

The notes aren't there in the first place, and when I try to organise by subject, it gives me a list of VCE subjects, not HSC subjects.

Cheers for this, will fix ASAP. Big bug on Notes.

Can anyone else replicate the attachment error mentioned by bangali_lok? I attached a photo and everything seemed to work fine.

Other than the minor things (header bar, spacing) the colours are very complementary and make it hard to visually distinguish differences. I don't think light blue on pale grey is a good pairing, maybe tweak the shades.

The home page is not very mobile friendly, at least on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S4). Most of the screen is taken up by an ad that isn't useful as it flows way off the page, and there's really nothing useful above the fold.

It just occurred to me that having icons for those two things might be cool, before 'logout' or something? Very prominent.

Yeah that ads a bug -- we're working on making it mobile friendly right now, after which I think the issues should be fixed. We're also going to make the header smaller and see what people think about it after it's not so domineering.  Thanks heaps for your input Daniel!

I've just pushed out the new design to the ATAR Calculator site as well (http://vce.atarcalc.com/), let me know if you see any issues with it over there. There's still a few rough edges and the design isn't 100% perfect but it does work.

One more bug: The layout of the "Look and Layout" section of the forum profile is... not ideal.

This CSS rule is messing it up:
Code: [Select]
.windowbg2_profile input, .windowbg2_profile textarea {
  width: 70%;
}
It might just need to be modified to exclude checkboxes (currently it's making the checkbox 70% of the field width, which is not expected :P )

Also the CSS and JavaScript are not combined or minified which means the initial page load takes longer than it could if it were more optimised.

The difference between a heading/hyperlink/title and regular text. I have difficult picking them apart without actually concentrating (ie it's not intuitive)

We had a look at the way the light bluey-grey colours alternated between posts on the old site after silverpixeli's suggestion, so the pure white background may change!

We'll soon add buttons exactly where they used to be for unread posts and unread replies, under the welcome message.

I don't mind the bright background tbh, but I'm with you on preferring dimmer colours. If I'm ever using a website that lets you choose a colour scheme, I'll always go for the black or the dark blue/grey. Easier on the eyes, especailly at night.

Good discussion, thanks guys. I understand now what people mean when they say it's "harsh". We'll definitely look at it.

Edit: The Notes things are all fixed. If anyone can't see the notes in the VCE section, just clear your cache and it should appear as it should (with some cool icons). For HSC Notes -- I'm uploading them again now.

Either ditch the freeze pane on the header or make it about a third of its current width.
I like the arrow on the bottom right you can click on to jump back to the top of the page.

Also please make the font smaller on the custom titles.
It's currently larger than usernames.

Also, the fact that it slides up instead of an instant leap is really fun to watch. :D Much prefer that to an instant jump.

HOWEVER the arrow itself annoyingly continues scrolling a little past its final resting place in the footer if you scroll down slow enough near the bottom of the page, this could be fixed just for smoothness

Also RE: the rest of Fyrefly's post I would think that having a persistent navigation header OR a 'go to top' arrow would be sufficient for ease of navigation, rather than both. The current header definitely needs shrinking at least, as everyone has said, but that's a design change rather than a bug. I also think making it hide-able (and hidden by default, but shown using a floating button like the 'go to top' one) is a really neat solution.

Yep, no idea what's going on with custom titles. Pi's is huge. Will fix.

We're also working on the header - it will be smaller, for sure, and then we'll see how people take it (also silverpixeli's suggestion above is a very cool one, so I'll put that forward). I'm not sure how much work is being done over the weekend, but I think the header will be changed quite quickly (in less than a week's time)

Something with the following banner - if you click to go to a post, you're navigated so that the top of your screen is the top of their post - but this doesn't take into account the banner, and so the top of their post is actually missing. Example of what I mean is attached. (thank you to my model, Fyrefly, for her contribution)

After a couple of days of not minding, this banner is driving me crazy. Every time I change tabs on Chrome and lower my mouse from the top of the screen I always seem to hove over one of the drop down menus from the banner, and then actively move my mouse crazily to get rid of it. Small thing, but not happy hahahaha /rant

The front page of AN displays old usernames btw, probs a glitch

Also like to make a suggestion to instantly sack the person who wrote these on the AN home page:

"100000 Students Registered - We’ve got more members than Dumbledore’s got spells!"

"5000000 Calculations - Our Calc brings all the students to the yard. That’s right, it’s better than yours."

Has the font changed? Or is it just smaller? It looks different (especially in the signatures).

The posts are still really close together (see attachment). Is this going to be fixed? Also, not sure if this is just me but the lack of borders really bother me. Or it's just the colour but I don't like how the posts are the same colour as the background (can be seen in the above attachment but have added another for good measure).

P.S. Please get rid of the banner that follows you as you scroll down the page. >:(

Can I make comment that's non-aesthetic and from long before the site change?

What do people think about the removal of gender on profiles?

I recognise that people can lie about it (as they can with anything), or be gender-fluid or not want to reveal it for whatever reason (in which case they don't have to, it's always up to them).  But overall, I feel that anything that makes us think of people more as human beings rather than utterly faceless words on a screen is positive.  Even something as basic as thinking of X as a girl makes you think of her a bit more like a real person, which then makes you more likely to treat her with respect. Imho.

(Plus, there's nothing more awkward than meeting a tutor/student when you'd pictured a girl and it's actually a guy :P  OK not really, I was meeting a random from AN at a station and didn't know if he was guy or girl, but knowing would have halved the people I was looking out for).

Yeah, agree with this. I think it would be good to have our gender displayed on our profile. I managed to find a list of non-binary gender symbols that can be found here for anyone's reference: http://nonbinary.org/wiki/Gender_symbols Not sure how much work it would take to get these all up as options on the site though, maybe we could just have it written (either choosing from a list or typing in a gender), rather than a symbol?

Maybe I'm insensitive/bigoted (sorry), but I think that list's a bit over the top.  Either have 1-2 extra symbols, or make it like it was before, and say, if you don't identify as either male or female, don't display your gender, and there are heaps of other people that won't either so it's not like you're odd-one-out.
But others may not even agree that we should have gender at all, I'm sure there was a reason for removing it.

Didn't mean have them all lol. Trans and intersex would be the obvious choices/most popular. But androgyne, neutrois and bigender would probably be good to have to. Obviously you don't need to add the various neutrois', eunuch, cuntboy, etc though. :P

Thought I might post up a suggestion that I've been thinking about for a while now. Not sure what others will think, oh well!

I think it would be a good idea to be able to 'favourite' posts and be able to view them later under favourites (whether that be visible on our profile or private). There's some really helpful posts out there that I'd really like to be able to come back to later without having to bookmark the page and then find said post again. Or alternatively it would be good if there was a feature where we could view all the posts we gave +1 to.

Anyway, just food for thought I guess. :)

Or alternatively it would be good if there was a feature where we could view all the posts we gave +1 to.

Anyway, just food for thought I guess. :)

Bookmark them on your browser and organise your bookmarks into VCE with subfolders into subjects? That's what I used to do.

I like the "see what we +1'd" idea though!

Also, we halved the height of the toolbar during scrolling so it doesn't impose upon the content. Interested in feedback :)

An improvement :)  But when in the forum section, is there any need to have it so wide up the top?  (the shift between wide and narrow as you scroll down is a bit annoying)  I'd also definitely shrink the AN logo; I see the need for bigger font in 'forums', 'notes' etc to make it easily navigable for newbies, but not the AN logo.  Here's an eg of a narrower bar.

one of the annoying things with the toolbar is your mouse might hover over it and accidentally expand it in which case it still blows up your screen AHAHA
just my 2 cents but i really think that people dont switch between forums to calculator to notes enough to warrant the toolbar being ever present

Install adblock on chrome and remove it manually. Works like a charm ;)

Clarifying question but is the "Tutors" section of AtarNotes now not a part of it anymore? (Can't seem to find it)..

I really need to fix that lorem ipsum bs tomorrow.

Okay guys. You'll notice that the padding has now increased (there's more distance between signatures and posts, which was an issue). Posts are also alternate colours like the old site to help you distinguish between posts easily. As already noted, the banner up the top now shrinks in size so it doesn't interfere as much as the content (and we will look into reducing the logo). Those are probably the remaining things that I hadn't already noted the fix of earlier in the thread. Whew. Hope you guys like the new website!

Just realised that philosophy isn't on the list of subjects you can choose to display on your profile. Any chance we could get the added in?
