Title: EXAM & INTERVIEW GUIDE: Elizabeth Blackburn School Of Sciences (By EBSS)
Post by: gha_tebs on August 08, 2015, 02:58:53 pm
Hi I am a student in EBSS, set to graduate in 2016. EBSS is a science specialist school, situated in Parkville as a sub-school of University High School. If you would like to come, please ensure you have a deep interest in science and maths.

The entrance exam consists of five components; verbal reasoning, science reasoning, reading comprehension. mathematics and writing.
Verbal reasoning: based on year 9 selective examinations (50 questions, 30 minutes)
Science reasoning: the same/similar to JMSS, if somewhat harder concepts to grasp (30 questions, 30 minutes)
Reading comprehension: grammar, punctuation, analysing text (40 questions, 30 minutes)
Mathematics: quadratics, problem solving, trigonometry, linear concepts (60 questions, 30 minutes)
Writing: the writing piece i did was a personal one, it was about your future plans, ambition, how science is a part of your life and its impact and how EBSS can benefit you. You should see it as a written interview to sell yourself to them. This part could practically mean if you get an interview or not.

General note: please advance your skills for the exam as the concepts tested are one year AHEAD.

How I studied/revised for the exam:
- read science magazines and articles to update your general knowledge
- must important: know what the year level above you is learning about, get an insight into VCE standard work (this is what gets you higher than everyone else)

In my generation, I was going to be the second year level there so not much people were aware of the school then. There were exactly 112 students doing the exam and resulted in 66 students being accepted. EBSS does not intend to fill all the spaces for a larger year level, they only accept one's who fulfil their requirements and standards, and are passionate.

Following the entrance exam, an interview takes place for one's who are partially successful. Questions involved:
- clarifying information regarding the writing piece from entrance exam
- what are 5 attitudes a successful scientist must have? Why are they needed?
- why do you like a certain field of science? (favourite science subject and why?)
- why do you want to come to EBSS? Difference between JMSS and EBSS? (mention facilities, curriculum)
- what future VCE subjects would you like to do?

Some other questions you should prepare are:
- why do you want to leave your current school?
- what are your hobbies?
- what do you consider as your strengths and weaknesses?
- why is science important and how can it help in the future?
- what is your proudest achievement and why?

REMEMBER: to point out your advantages of yourself as you go! Teachers are looking for self-motivated, independent and most importantly, let your passion for science and maths shine! It is extremely important they get the message that you are passionate!
As expected, before the interview please familiarise yourself with the facilities and curriculum EBSS provides. This includes:
- University High School
- GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre)
- Bio21
- University of Melbourne

Here in EBSS we have extended investigation. It is where you find your own research question to look deeper into and find a conclusion regarding it. At the interview they will ask you about your interest in science and your favourite field. Building on top of this, you should question yourself to have potential research questions. But don't worry too much about it, it can always change! Some questions you can ask yourself include:
1. what field do i enjoy? physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science or psychology?
2. in the field there are sub-topics. eg, interested field is biology. subtopics include genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, animals and plants etc.
3. from sub-topics, question you questions to reach a research question. To do this, using a mind-map is helpful. For example, you enjoy genetics in biology. Your research question could be how does the length of DNA impact the live expectancy of an individual and how fast he/she ages.

Interview tips:
- be passionate and enthusiastic
- dress neat and be on time
- try not to get too nervous, it leads to stress and when you're stressed you tend to loose your thinking processes
- if you get asked if you have any questions, ask anything you want to know. It would be good if you have some prepared or a good question to ask is: what do you look for in a student? After the teacher replies, remember to link/ relate it back to you to widen your chances of getting in!

My experience: Joining the EBSS community opens you up to much more opportunities. Because we are getting older, it isn't so much about the education anymore. It is also about life after VCE and your own career. EBSS gives you chances to experience a variety of fields of careers and its skills needed. The environment differs a lot for most people as team-teaching is done in a lecture style, as well as getting a personal mentor. Overall, you meet other great students who are like-minded, wishing to achieve to each person's maximum potential!

Feel free to visit the school website at: https://www.unihigh.vic.edu.au/index.php/specialist-programs/elizabeth-blackburn-school-of-sciences
Good luck everyone for your studies!

Update (2018): I'm currently in second year university and I am definitely grateful for the experiences at EBSS such as learning styles, tips and how to approach university life basically!

Thanks so much that was a great guide I really appreciate ur effort in creating this awesome helpful guide. I have my interview scheduled in a week and I just want some info about the extended investigation. What exactly is it about, what sort of ideas can u pick and what sort of questions do they ask regarding that.

Thanks in advance.

Absolutely no problem! For starters, remember to be smiley, introduce yourself to the friendly teacher. Extended investigation is a unit 3/4 subject in VCE. Because EBSS is a science school, it requires you to choose and select a research question that interests you. Throughout the year, you will conduct methods to answer your research question.

They will ask you what your favourite field of science is, from there it will lead to your extended investigation and what you plan to research about. Say you like genetics, your research question could be how does the length of DNA impact an individual's ageing rate.
The questions they will ask you may include:
- why you enjoy that field of science
- why does the research question interest you
- what influenced you to enjoy it

I would advise you to think about what a potential question for you might be, it isn't set and stone yet, it can always change!
If you don't mind me asking, when is your interview? Also, how many people were at the entrance exam?

The only reason why people don't like it is because they didn't want to do the science subjects. The school lets you know the subjects you can and can't do so really it's your fault for joining in the first place.

hello guys, I'm currently in year 10 and I want to apply for this school for year 11.

I was wondering if you can help me by telling me how the enrolment works and what kind of things are in entrance exam be specific because I'm year 10 and I'm applying for year 11. Can you please let me know on average how many people apply and get selected and what kind of science, maths and english question they ask. I'm very stressed so please let me know ASAP.

It's sort of like any other recruitment process for a selective school.

You do an exam that consists of 4 sections and a written piece. If you get past that stage then you get to do a short interview.

Last year I think there were like 150 students and they chose 70 but this year the advertisements are even bigger so I would be expecting at least 200. They can accept up to 100 so long as the students are suited for the school.

As for the questions themselves you should take a look at the practice exams they provide because they're quite similar to the real exam. But you can also look up online ones (that's what I did and I found it super helpful). Also try looking up "mathematical reasoning quizzes" and stuff like that. I found that quite useful aswell.

Don't worry you'll be fine just make sure you time yourself with your practice exams as a lot of people struggled with time last year.

Just make sure you study what gha_tebs said and listen to Photon (he's a god) and you should be fine, I managed to get in without knowing anything a year ahead however I was blessed that EBSS wasn't too popular. If you have any questions about EBSS life, just give us a pm; I hope you do well.

p.s EBSS isn't as ruthless as JMSS or Melbourne High, so don't stress too much.

School in city vs school in Werribee, is it that hard?  :P

But seriously, congratulations!

It is a very hard chice man. It's not the location, it's what the school brings to the table. If ne will provide me the perfect environment to become a highly regarded scientist, the other will provide an amazing opportunity to become a qualified scholar. I want to been an Aerospace engineer, and am actually starting to lean towards going to EBSS now, but we'll see what happens after the interview on the 10th. I'm actually overjoyed on having to get to choose though, but I'm also confused at the same time.

Good job everyone! If might help, if you're deciding which school to attend, is to talk to some people there such as teachers, students etc. It's a good idea to get a general feel of the atmosphere so you feel comfortable.

That's funny, you think you're going to be using textbooks next year.

All science and maths books are going to be in Ebook format. I can't tell you what your English books are going to be because Idk.

To extend photon's answer, the reason why they should buy ebooks is that the desks in the lecture theatres are quite small. You won't have enough room for textbooks; using a onenote and an ebook on a tablet such as a microsoft surface is the ideal to go.

I'm not sure where to post this so I'm just going to post it here anyway.

It was great meeting you guys at the symposium today I really had an awesome time and I hope you guys did as well. I was at the symposium last year and it's so much less awkward this time because I'm on the "other end" this time.

I just want to say a few things about EI before I do my oral report next week mainly because people were talking about the subject today and I want to make sure future EBSS students don't mess things up as badly as some other students did.

EI is not a bad subject, it's a very hard subject but it isn't bad. If you're a hard worker then you should be able to power through it but otherwise you're going to have to be very strategic in making your question the most enjoyable. If you don't like to do a lot of work then stir clear of the Literature Review method and do something more emperical (this will make more sense next year). Literature Review is what most students do and it's why a lot of people don't like EI because it's the most demanding of all methods of research.

I personally thought it was a great experience and I definitely learnt a lot from EI.

Also, please don't be that guy that doesn't take EI seriously because it's their 7th subject. It's generally a bad idea as you never know when you'll do bad in your other 3/4s (unless you're amazing in all your other subjects).

The Science aptitude test is mostly Chemistry sort of things, there are some questions that are sort of the Chemistry equivalent of Literal Equations, except more you know, more chemistryish.

If you think you're going to have trouble with it, don't worry too much, because you can make it up with the rest of the tests, I think I got an average for it, but I went pretty well with the other ones so they let me in. Also on a separate note, if you get into EBSS you need to be able to learn on your own, because you're going to be in a class of around 70 for most of your subjects, so you're not going to get that same level of teacher interaction that you may have had at your current school. If you can it's very useful to form study groups with other students to review notes and classwork, or get a tutor, but they're super expensive, and at least I think having a tutor is morally questionable.
