TSSM is testing but okay except for this one question:

Quote
Question 8
Use the change of variable u=sin(3x) to evaluate the integral of dx / cos(3x). Express your answer in the form a ln f(x) + C

This isn't supposed to be an easy question is it? It's still got me screwed :P

I tried the iTute exams and many of the questions I'd never covered before. Even my teacher had trouble with it

Although I could quote that integral from memory (I don't encourage memorising..), you can solve it by noticing that you can transform it into an integral in the form 1/(1 - u^2) which can be solved by partial fractions.

tsfx ones are long and tough at the same time...not much room for mistakes..
they tend to drag out questions way too far and end up screwing over people who haventt made it past part c)

 1 / cos(3x) need to be changed to cos(3x)/cos^2(3x)

and get to
the form 3/(1 - u^2)

then  u can solve it easily.

those are fun anti-s to try:

1/(1+x^3)

1/sqrt(1+x^2)

First is partial fractions.

Second is inverse sinh i.e. log[sqrt[1+x^2]+x] if i recall correctly

I have a pretty fun one in the univ maths section, be sure to check out :)

You misinterpreted me. I wrote inverse sinh. That's inverse hyperbolic sine

Nope. Sorry, I get carried away sometimes lol. A spesh way would be to substitute x = tan u, then it reduces to the problem of integrating sec

Remember kids.

Cosh^2(x) - Sinh^2(x) = 1 ^_^

By far the hardest paper I've done was Kilbaha. I got 30/40 for the first paper, and a horrible mark for the second...

What do you do once u get the first one in the form 1/((x+1)(x^2 -x +1))
How do u divide that into partial fractions?

Is it the one at the University of Melbourne that gets you $2500?"

Don't worry about cosh and sinh...

The scholarship I need is for Engineering at Monash University, which requires a 98. :)

Can you still get that scholarship if you do a double degree or do you need to do just straight engineering?

Yes, it is the $6000 Engineering scholarship.

I think the ENTER required for the double degree with commerce is 86 or so (At Gippsland campus). The ENTER I need for Civil and Environmental is 72.

Enwiabe, you can get it for the double, i'm sure.

Good cuz I wanna do Aerospace Engineering/Science (which is 96.7 and very gettable for me) and the only thing keeping me working this year is that if I get a high ENTER I get the scholarship :P Otherwise I'd just stop bothering with chem which is soporifically boring.
