Title: English Language Exam Discussion
Post by: odeaa on November 12, 2015, 07:04:07 pm
How'd we go??

I unfortunately completely forgot to include the stimulus ahhaha
anyone know the highest score i can get with rank 2 (strong cohort) and around 95% on the exam (other than obviously not using stimulus)? wrote like 6 quality pages, the essay was the best thing i've ever written in my life except for one fatal flaw lol

ah well, can't have everything

I'm sure you know this, but you don't have to quote the stimulus directly. Even if you have just a hint of the stimulus you should be fine.

As for me, I think I did okay - definitely didn't write my best essay. But I'm just so glad I'm done man!

I feel you - I'm so glad I don't have to write another essay! But overall I'm happy with how it went :)

Which essay topic did everyone pick?

Essay 7, the topics were a bit weird (for what I'd studied) but it was manageable and fit well with my journal. Just forgot to chuck in some stimulus ahah

Went for Essay Question 8. Essays were a bit tricky this year - wouldn't be surprised if the distribution for essay choices is roughly equal.
Managed to pull off roughly 4-5 pages of discussion about PC, euphemism, and obfuscatory language.

Time was pressuring, and hence there were things I would have wanted to fix up in the AC and short answer (stuff I'd like to add :P) but anyway, finished with ~3 mins to go so yeah.

DONE!

Section A and B I feel good about.
Section C was horror. Bad choice choosing question 8, by my part. Goodbye 50 raw.

Same man. I was tossing up between 7 and 8 for a few good minutes but settled for 8, not sure why..

Not the best - talked about positive face needs but didn't really touch on negative face needs - bad call on my part and I spent too long on AC.

Hopefully my AC can offset the essay :3

sad cos there wasn't a topic directly about language + identity

wrote the Australian one (one can't remember which number it was)

one of the short answer questions (3rd one) was a bit weird. i don't think we've learnt about lexical fields or whatnot or whatever it was lol so I just BS-ed

finished the exam 15 mins early but I tried to write really fast so hopefully my handwriting's legible

my essay was like 5 pages and my AC four but my AC had tonnes of paragraphs which wasn't organized, my essay was structured better and with longer paragraphs but I probably didn't have enough examples

overall, the exam wasn't too bad but I'm still nervous about my chances at a 30 lol

I started off writing question 7 then 15 minutes later had nothing to write then hastily started writing question 8. That will probably as close of a gamble I will ever take.

I talked about politicians in paragraph 1 and 2, with examples being firstly a NSW Labor Leader posting LOL cats to try and meet positive face needs. In the second I focused on the use of euphemisms for positive face needs with the example of Global Warming. In the last paragraph I talked about negative face needs with the example being that of gender neutral terms such as Mx being added into the Oxford Dictionary.

Section C was nonetheless a surprise. Section B I found easy to analyse, there was a lot to work with - I wrote about Prosodic Features, Topic Manage / Turn Taking and Lexical Patterning.
