Title: Holidays reading for 1/2?
Post by: DiamondBlueMoon on November 16, 2015, 09:56:53 pm
Hi guys,
I'm an international student who's gonna enter Year 11 next Jan. I find myself more interested in English Language than normal English, but unfortunately there are hardly any materials on this subject where I come from. I want to get a head start on this, so can you guys suggest any titles that I should go through? Either notes or ebooks will do, thank you :)

Some things you can do:
1)  Complete quizzes on parts of speech / word classes.  There are many, many examples of these available on the net for English as Additional Language learners.  Also look at sentence type and sentence structure quizzes. This is important for 3/4.  Look at the list of metalanguage for 1/2 in the Study Design for more examples.
2)  Read anything you can find on Child Language Acquisition (not needed in 3/4, but a big topic in 1/2)
3)  Read about the history of English, and about Australian English. This is a handy book for Australian English: https://www.oup.com.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/167251/Speaking_our_Language_-_Introduction.pdf Examples of Australian English and opinions are useful for 3/4, but not so much the history of English.

Hey there!

Personally I would first recommend familiarising yourself with the jargon (metalanguage list for 1/2): http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vce/englishlanguage/englang-sd-2012.pdf

You'll find that metalanguage underpins pretty much all of English Language and is what will allow you to get an amazing mark at the end of year 12!

I hope that helps :)
