Title: Options to transferring into B.Comm Monash University
Post by: Anna.c on December 17, 2015, 12:50:59 am
Hi, I'm hoping to do a Bachelor of Commerce at Monash (or Melbourne) next year however I don't meet the ATAR requirement, even with SEAS. So I was wondering would it be easier to do Commerce at Deakin or Latrobe University and try to transfer to Monash or Melbourne to do Commerce? Or do a Bachelor of Business Specialist at Monash and transfer to Commerce from there?

Thanks in advanced!

First think about whether you'll be fine changing schools after 1 year. Also, you'll need a good GPA/WAM for the transfer, so what would you think would be the easiest to do well in?

Both of these are equally doable. I would suggest going to Monash, as internal transfers are generally easier than external transfers, but also pick a course that you'll enjoy if you end up not doing well enough to transfer. If you don't like the business specialist degree, go commerce at Deakin or La Trobe. If you don't like the comm degree at those two unis, go the Monash route, etc.

Also, I highly (HIGHLY) recommend still keeping Monash/Melbourne comm at the top of your preferences, as you never know what'll happen to the clearly-in. It might decrease by 20 points! (I mean, I doubt it, but you never know) A course does not have to be in the first slot for you to get it. All VTAC does is they look at your first preference, check if you're eligible, and if so, give it to you. If not, they move down the list, and repeat. You could get into a course even if it's at the bottom of the list, so make sure you list courses in order of PREFERENCE, not based on your plan because you didn't think your ATAR was high enough.

Keep your courses still in preference order. I would not significantly change them unless its clearly impossible (say 10 atar points above what you have) OR if you have changed your mind about your future direction, after careful thought of course.

Your best option is probably Bachelor of Business at Monash Caufield. You can do many similar units and you'll already be a Monash student. As others have noted, internal transfers are often somewhat (but not hugely) easier. You will easily be able to credit the units and wont need to repeat them, you'll also make Monash friends and adapt to the culture.

Even then it can't hurt to leave your dream course as no.1.
