Title: UoM Accel Maths 1 + 2 as a breadth?
Post by: Orb on December 31, 2015, 05:42:56 pm
Hey guys,

Was just perusing the subject handbook, but was always intrigued with Accel maths 1&2.
Just out of curiosity, did anyone do Accel Maths 2 only without 1? (i've done Monash extension maths this year but not UMEP maths so apparently monash maths does become quite useless in this respect)

This is because I want to take a Maths breadth, but would also like to preserve the other one for something else (education-related).

Thanks!

P.S I've read the subject reviews but it doesn't quite answer my question :P

You'd have to first find out whether you can apply for Advanced Standing having done MUEP Maths. UMEP Maths follows the AM 1 course quite closely, but I'm not sure whether this is the case for MUEP Maths. Assuming that you can apply for Advanced Standing, then AM 2 without AM 1 is possible, but be warned that AM 2 is not an easy subject at all. It is probably the hardest first year maths subject that you can take at Melbourne Uni, and is pretty much two subjects packed into one. An easier option would be Calc 2, and I'd recommend doing this subject if GPA is high on your priority list. However, if you are genuinely interested in maths, and don't care too much about GPA, then do AM 2, as, albeit hard, it is, in my view, by far the best first year maths subject taught at Melb Uni. The lecturer, Barry Hughes, designed the subject, wrote the 'textbook' for the subject, and has been teaching the subject for as long as we were alive, so you don't get the sort of disjointedness that you often get in many of the subjects offered at the uni.

"Assuming this means you have completed MTH1040, we would allow 12.5
points of unspecified credit and you would be eligible to enrol in
MAST10006 and MAST10007." from UoM

So what does unspecified credit mean? (not enough for advanced standing?)

Nah, it means it just won't be attached to a unit. You'll still get the credit, they just won't say where it came from.

So what would be the use of that?
i.e what benefits does that give me, if any?

Well, it's one less unit you have to do, so you can underload for a semester.

So it actually counts as something? wow cool!
I'm assuming this will have to count as a breadth yeah?
